Bucket List Whitetail - 07/14/23 01:39 AM
What would be the B&C score and age class Whitetail to "fulfill" your hunting bucket list? Personally, a 150"+ mature(6+ yo) 8pt. or any 10pt. or more scoring 175"+

I don't hunt for antlers. I hunt for meat. But a good 8-10 point melanistic buck would be cool. Score not important.

Mine was a 160"+ off my ranch, did that in 2016. Now like you I'd like a 150+ 8pt.
For many many years, I had a goal of 160+ whitetail, 180+ muledeer and 350+ elk. I was lucky enough to get all 3 in two years.

Re: Bucket List Whitetail - 07/14/23 03:28 AM
I have been fortunate to kill numerous mature (5+) year old whitetail.....I was never hung up on score, just age. I always hoped I would get a 160" deer one day. Me and the wife went up to Ohio a couple years back and I shot one with my bow that scored 234". I'll never beat that deer, nor do I want to. I'm happy chasing Hill Country whitetail with my recurve, although I would like to go back to the Midwest at some point and shoot another deer or two....that is different hunting than what we have here, and a different whitetail...act different and look different.
I'm much more focused on how I hunt whitetail now ( trying to be a traditional archery only hunter until I age out) than chasing a score. If it scores 100" or 200", if I shot it with my recurve and its mature I'm a happy camper.
Mule Deer are a different story however....I want a 180"+, and I want a wall full of them. ....

A 160"+ here at the house. Shooting one (no matter how big) on someone else's place just doesn't do it for me anymore. Feeding/watching them everyday and doing food plots and such is what I find most enjoyable at this point.
There has only been one that would score that high in the 8 years we've been here so it wont be real easy to do. I never saw him in person but he was an old potbellied 12 point with tons of mass.

Mine was to shoot a 150+ class with my late father’s old 30-40 krag. He built back in the 60’s I fulfilled this dream last year with lucky jack outfitters ( Thank You Charles)!

You did say Bucket List right?
Mine would actually be two!
One of those huge, hairy beast up in northern Wisconsin, Minnesota or Canada that's body is so big (300lbs +) it makes a 170" rack look small.
Next would be a magnificent S.TX main frame 10 with big double drop tines.

I was blessed to take this LF buck a few years back. He made B&C book - he grossed 201 and netted 199 B&C. His G’2s were right at 16 inches.
He was a 175 nine point the previous year and I let him walk. He added 21 inches in a drought year.

150” of our own place. Have had several on camera through the years but haven’t caught up to one. Then 160”. Only have had one of those so that should be a good challenge.

Fantastic, a deer worthy of the attention and record book. Great job of hunting him all the way to your wall.

That pic is probably one from a ranch Stxranchman frequents. It looks like one of his pics in the quality.

I already have a net Booner on the wall, but I'd like to hit that mark on my own land. There's something special about putting in the management work to attain such an achievement.

Accomplished my bucket list whitetail last year....160" main frame 12 point on my own land, LF of course.

Got lucky and got a 163” with a crossbow off a small LF ranch a few years ago. Will probably never beat that I’m assuming.

I love hearing about guys getting a once in a lifetime buck like that. Reminds me of growing up and people putting big bucks in the local newspaper and everybody talking about it around town. (Obviously before the pay-n-shoot white horn freak days)

One of those huge body dudes from up in Canada! Don't really care how big the horns are as long as it is full grown!

Thank you, Sir. Considering where I hunt it's definitely a rarity.

I would have to pass because it is only a main frame 8 and not the main frame 10 with double drops thats on my bucket list.

Re: Bucket List Whitetail - 07/15/23 08:24 PM
Ive checked 2 off the list... a slick 7x7 that netted book that i shot on my "dream" ranch and also a 28" wide 8 point with double drops.
I also missed out on another dream buck back in college. I hunted that deer for 2 months and the ranch owner shot him on his first sit at a blind that i was going to start hunting that next evening. That buck was a slick 8 point with 6" bases and grossed 157", he also had a 5" g3 on one side so he would have went over 150" as a 7 point!! He shot him as a cull buck and didnt even want the horns. I said i wanted them, but the ranch manager talked him into mounting it for the lodge. The head ended up in one of the bunk houses......im stilll sore about that. That ranch sold a few years after i left and im still in an effort to track down that head.

I’ve had a fascination with shooting a clean large frame 6 point (3x3) whitetail haven’t came across one yet

I don't hunt for antlers. I hunt for meat. But a good 8-10 point melanistic buck would be cool. Score not important.
Same here. I don’t even really care much for Whitetail. But, it makes for good jalapeno cheese smoked sausage which lasts me all year long for breakfast’tasis. Currently, i am no longer on a fancy lease. So, my bucket list initiative is simply to shoot a Whitetail, any Whitetail.

nothing wrong with that - hunting for the meat is totally ok - hunting for big antlers is also totally ok - the beauty of living in a free country IMO - everybody gets to make their own choices

I got my lifetime buck off of my smaller low fence place in western young county in 2021. The most satisfying part was being on my place. He scored 179 6/8.
Got the mount a few months ago.
