Did everyone tag out?

Did everyone tag out? - 12/22/22 02:00 PM

We've been busy for a while and off the grid. My father in law who we were taking care of the last years passed away. I've been spending a lot of time with the wife since he lived with us and she was his primary caregiver. We haven't gotten any hunting done but I think I will try this afternoon. I haven't had a chance to see who got one this year. I like to see the pictures. Post one if you got one. Thanks

I'm still trying to kill my first buck here in southern Atascosa County. Rut is on but the big boys are not around. Lots of young 2.5 - 3.5 year olds chasing does. I'll keep hunting till season is done but I will not shoot a buck unless it is mature with a nice big rack!

I’ve bagged one javalina so far. Seen some good deer that we let walk and for the youngsters to shoot.

On Buck, yes. May shoot some does but would need to figure out a way to lease some freezer space. This one put 110 lbs processed meat in the freezer. [Linked Image]

One hog so far. Seen lots of decent younger bucks. Three kids on the lease got a good buck each. That's worth it to me.

Let me guess, you lost something and couldn't range it?

No hit it in point of the shoulder at 14 yards. He turned straight on to me so decided to take frontal, went to hell after that. I tracked blood and hoof for 1.25 miles per onX before losing the trail. Zero penetration, could have used arrow/broadhead again. I should have waited for him to go back broad side.

My buddy killed a 370 same trip, it was awesome experience to hunt a place I had always dreamed about and even tried to buy via buying lottery tickets once. The overall great experience regardless of outcome, it’s a pretty special hunt.

Well, technically he didn't lose something in January....because he was able to go back and find it rofl

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/22/22 08:26 PM

Tagged out on bucks. I've only seen one yearling doe, certainly not big or old enough to shoot. I may go again next week or in the antlerless extension. Will depend on my schedule and the weather.

That was post shot!!! That was when hauling arse to get another arrow sent.

Here is why I missed that shot!!! I’d like to offer up PSA, make sure your decoy is securely fastened at all times

two doe for me so far...

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/22/22 08:49 PM

In TX, I shot a doe, and son shot a doe. Don't have any really big bucks on camera, so unless we get a surprise buck, we might shoot a spike for meat...might just eat what we've got and wait until next year. We do have quite a few nice bucks that will be hosses next year.

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/22/22 10:10 PM

Single cull buck. Nothing mature roaming my place this year.

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/22/22 10:19 PM

Shot one buck that was on our cull list and passed on 2 mature bucks that just weren't quite there yet. Hoping they make it and we get more rain next year.

good 10 in october, management this month, turkey, pig, and doe this month as well. all with a bow

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/22/22 10:51 PM

19 or 20 does. 1 spike. 1 ancient, squiggly 10 a friend shot. 2 months left for MLD. 'Don't really know if anything else will fall. It'll be fine either way.

I like to get 2 deer a year which fills my freezer. I managed to get a large doe & a large buck so I'm GTG! up

Yes, 3 weeks ago. It’s all pork until Nov. 23

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/22/22 11:28 PM

Got a doe for some freezer meat. Still have a couple months left on MLD so plenty of chances at a decent buck. Actually shot the doe with my dedicated hog rifle. Was waiting for hogs to show up when she came wondering in. So that is a first for me, shooting a deer with a thermal optic (it was around 4:30 pm, so well away from end of legal shooting light.)

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/23/22 12:11 AM

I haven’t shot a deer this season. Could have shot a bunch of them but nothing I want so far. Still got 2 more months so anything could happen.

My son did shoot a big bodied mature 6 point so we got some meat.

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/23/22 12:37 AM

No shots fired at this time, have not seen a buck big enough shoot. May have to take a doe or two.

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/23/22 01:03 AM

I shot a 4 yr old 8 point last weekend, after passing him several times. This is the first time in 15 years, haven’t seen a hog while deer hunting.

Got a fat pre rut cull buck and bunch of elk meat and never fired a shot
Grandson hooked me up up

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/23/22 01:50 AM

Shot a big blonde black bear in June, and a Buffalo in September ( plus a fat sow hog with no piglets my son shot ) so I’m good on meat for a long, long while.

I took two does with archery gear ( one with my recurve and the other with a compound ) and missed a pig with the recurve at 15 yards.

Have not hunted much since deer season started, only sat one time since thanksgiving, the hunting has been below average for my home place in regards to buck movement. I would like to shoot one more animal with my recurve and would be happy it being a hog, but would like to get a shot opportunity. Gonna give it a few sits hopefully this coming week before season wraps up

3 bucks in the freezer. up

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/23/22 12:54 PM

With deer numbers down we are limiting everyone to 3 deer. I got my 3. Doe, spike, and cull buck. I also shot a 9-3/8" tom. I hit him back by the legs with a 30-06 .22 accelerator but it hit a bone and blew up inside his guts. [Linked Image]

Same situation for me this year. Worst season I've experienced on my property in the past 35 yrs.

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/23/22 03:07 PM

Still have all my tags thus far!
Neighbors seem to have been having a good time!....Heard a lot of shooting when I did sit, and some of the bigger bucks I saw at the beginning of the season I don't see anymore.
Oh well, when they kill them off maybe they'll stop hunting as heavy, at least for a while.

You have a lot of good meat, especially that Buffalo.

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/23/22 10:10 PM

I also have not tagged in...I am on a new property and have decided to try and let a couple of good bucks walk in hopes they will be great bucks next year. We definitely have drought induced horn deficiencies. I have two longhorn spikes that I am holding in reserve for late season. Will hunt the last week of December and hope something great...or at least very good...shows up.

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/24/22 12:11 AM

Have bagged 8 deer so far, brought 6 home. Gonna try hard for 3 of my kids to bag 3-5 more this season, then it's time for a bunch of processing/sausage making.

Got an invite to go chase yellowfin tuna, so if that works out I'll be in the blue water and not the woods next weekend.

One more tag
Posted By: TPACK

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/24/22 02:14 PM

Still have all of mine. Saw over 15 bucks of all ages and none that I was willing to burn my tag on. I did rattle up a buck that I would have shot, but he would not jump the fence and come on our side. Had to watch him walk out of my life. He was a 9 point that was well over 130 inches. I`ve killed 12 hogs since September and not even seeing them any longer. They usually disappear or go nocturnal this far into gun season. I`ve had a great season just being out in the woods and still have another week to go. Hope to get in 3-4 more hunts at least before giving up on using my buck tag.

Congrats to you guys that at least got to shoot. clap I tried to go out but it turned into work and and then I had to head back home. I'll try to get an actual hunt in at the end of this week.

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/28/22 02:33 PM

Negative. About 2k miles of window time, 10dys at two different outfitters and no shot opportunity. Best buck I saw was running a doe beside the Hwy on the way over.

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/29/22 11:47 PM

Filled my tags once when first started deer hunting. Will never do that again, more than I could eat before the next season. I only take what I can eat in a year!

Heading to the ranch in about an hour for the long weekend. Haven't punched a tag yet, hoping to get about 6 does on ice before we leave Monday.

Re: Did everyone tag out? - 12/30/22 12:11 AM

I took two does off my place personally, and let a couple kids take two more.

Never did see a buck that was even half decent, and only saw one mature cull the first week of season.

Pretty poor season both in numbers and quality....at a stand where i would see a dozen deer last year I would only see two or three. Hung it up early yesterday and called it a season.

Still thankful for the place and I'm looking forward to next season when my daughter will start being behind the trigger
