Coleman County Deer

Coleman County Deer - 11/07/18 01:26 PM

Any Coleman county hunters on here? Deer have really slowed down on hitting the feeders and bucks were still paired up last weekend on my place. What are y’all seeing?

Re: Coleman County Deer - 11/07/18 06:00 PM

went three weeks ago and activity was pretty slow, had a buddy out last weekend and saw lots of deer moving but no rut activity.

Re: Coleman County Deer - 11/07/18 06:04 PM

We saw lots of does in coleman county and almost zero bucks. And we know plenty of bucks live on the place but they weren't moving. When are the bucks usually chasing the does in coleman county? We are in coleman county close to brown county. This our first year on this new ranch

Re: Coleman County Deer - 11/08/18 12:53 AM

We saw plenty on our Coleman lease we are directly on the Colorado river our bucks finally split up this week but are still hitting feeders decently. Have a couple bucks with swollen necks already chasing but the week before of and after Thanksgiving seem to be our best rut times in our area.

Re: Coleman County Deer - 11/08/18 01:02 AM

We are in SE Coleman County. Haven't been out to the place in a few weeks. Was wondering the same thing about movement right now. Will be headed out for 4 days tomorrow evening. Hopefully there is a little bit of movement.

Re: Coleman County Deer - 11/08/18 02:13 AM

Seeing lots of young deer but the mature ones are laying low. The young bucks were starting to chase last weekend so maybe this weekend will be even better.

Same here to the north of you. The pasture looks like a giant food plot right now. Slowest start to an opener that I can remember.

I’m thinking it’s going to be sooner this year. This cold front may kick it off. I’ll let you know in the morning!

Re: Coleman County Deer - 11/09/18 01:01 AM

I hunt on the coleman county line close to brown county. One of the slowest opening weekends in the 15 years I have been on the place. No mature bucks on camera, the deer are walking past the feeders and not stopping, and no little bucks chasing yet. I hope it will pick up this weekend. The RUT normally starts a week or so before thanksgiving but can run a bit later occasionally.

Re: Coleman County Deer - 11/10/18 04:14 AM

I was out this evening and let a young buck walk. Heard a number of shots from surrounding properties, but we also have some HF ranches around us, so could have been from them. Hopefully things will be moving in the morning!

Re: Coleman County Deer - 11/10/18 04:35 AM

Things seem to be a bit slow getting cranked up this year; perhaps this next cold front will get the big boys motivated.

Of course, if you're in the right place at the right time wonderful things can happen. This low-fence buck was taken by a hunter on a friends ranch close to Novice this morning. 158 and change...not too shabby!

Deer were running hard last night as we were entering our place, but have not seen much this morning. Rut is on.

Re: Coleman County Deer - 11/19/18 07:22 PM

I have a property in Coleman County that is near the border of Brown County. Seeing plenty of does - they are hitting the oats food plots hard. Not as many bucks as I'd like. Letting the two nice bucks I've seen mature and spread their seed. Praying the neighbors don't take them. They are 2.5 - 3.5 years so still time to grow nicer racks.

I’m headed out tonight to hunt a couple days. Hopefully they’re on the move. I’ll be east of Coleman 3-4 miles

Thanks I hunt same area south of Valea we have not seen much this year. Farmer just got fields planted so they will not be any good to us this year. We usually see 15 to 20 every time we go out. Now it's 3 or 4

Re: Coleman County Deer - 11/26/18 05:45 PM

I was talking to our neighbor in Coleman County S of Santa Anna, and he hung cameras in some of the oaks. He said that almost all of the deer on his place have stopped hitting his corn and are in the acorns. We haven't seen anything but 1 or 2 very young bucks on camera in about 2.5 weeks. I think in the Coleman county area there are just a lot of acorns still and the deer will be in them until they rot or are gone. Best hunting may be in another couple of weeks. I will be out this weekend, but don't have real high hopes. I am taking 5 days mid December. Hoping the strategy works out for me as we just aren't seeing anything at feeders or moving around at all right now.

My group and I just got on a new lease in Coleman county. And we went out couple weeks ago and just randomly put out a couple feeders with cameras on them just to get a sneak peak. And we were very pleased! Maybe not any monsters just yet but I see lots of potential. Sorry bout the pic quality!

MexicoHunter, those are some nice looking deer. I hunt a small place just south of Santa Anna in SE Coleman county. We have had some nice bucks on camera too. However, this year hunting was bad. We just didn't see anything all year. Hopefully with a good off season and some decent weather we have a great 2019. Good luck to you!

These were taken August and September on our place. The one with me and the deer hanging was taken 2 years ago off of our place.

Didn't see him in person this year. Saw him last year but never had a shot. He disappeared once the season started. Still on the lookout for him. Haven't checked any of the cameras in a few weeks to see if he's been back.

A ton of good looking bucks on camera. All of them are still in velvet. Hogs have vanished the past 2-3 months. Should be a good year!

Anyone got any reports or pics to share ? We went last weekend and finished a few odd jobs . Glad to report Big O still has some good grub and as good of pie as I’ve eaten. And with it being as dry as it is the deer seem to be hitting the feeders plenty hard . I put out a little rice bran so will see what they think of that.

Hey Matt, looks like things are going to work for you guys. I'm thinking it could be an expensive season. The rains came at the right times. It helps to have a taxidermist in the family. grin
I'm still looking for a certain someone, but here are a couple that have gotten my attention, if they don't go underground again...

This one really looks good from any angle...

Since this will be our groups first season in Coleman county. To all of you veteran Coleman county hunters if you had to pick a 2-3 day window this season to hunt the rut what days would those be. Not sure it makes much difference but we are in the Southwest corner of the county close to lake Ivie.

I hunted in Coleman County (Talpa) for many years, but have since bought a place in southern Brown County. I am about 40 minutes from Big O's and drive over once a month or so for dinner. If y'all set a time for a Big O's meet up, please share. I would enjoy meeting some fellow THF'rs.

Didn't make it out last weekend. I'm headed out tomorrow through Monday. We'll see. I haven't seen a whole lot on camera this year, but things may change with the weather change and getting ready for the rut to start. We also had to run a few head of cattle on our 60 acres this year for the first time in quite a while. I think that played havoc on the deer some. Just sold them on wednesday, so I'm hoping that the deer start moving back in.

I know other guys in the county who have had a lot of good deer on camera.
