Round Mountain area hunting

Round Mountain area hunting - 01/16/18 11:43 PM

I may have a chance to get on a lease near Round Mountain in northern Blanco County. Its 2000 acres with 10 hunters that the lease manager just acquired, but he's already been managing an adjoining 1600 acres. I don't have any other information about it, but my Dad is going to look at it one of the next 2 weekends with his buddy that knows the lease manager. Hopefully, they can get a look at some photos of deer that have been taken off the existing 1600 acre lease.

I'm looking for opinions on the quality of bucks this area can realistically produce with a good management plan. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Realistic with protein feeding, 120-140s and some 150s and higher but average 130 I'd think.

Buddy of mine was on 3000 acres two counties NW of there in Kimble county and with good management and protein feeding they pulled 130s and sometimes 140s with occassional 150.

Horseshoe Bay is not far from there and I can tell you, those golf course deer have some good genetics!

I travel between Marble Falls and Johnson City frequently and have seen some decent bucks along 281 but usually on the west side. Seems like the east side is made up of goat ranches.

I grew up hunting on my family's 4500 acres 3 miles east of Round Mountain on 962. Unfortunately we had some unsuccessful cousins who wanted to cash out on the land that had been in my family since 1885 and it got sold. There's a decent chance that the place you're looking at leasing is my family's old place or a neighbor. Anyway, you should expect to see lots of deer, sometimes 15-20 per hunt. The average mature buck around there is probably in the 125-130 range with large bucks in the 140's. Biggest we ever had killed on our place was by the lease hunters on the northern end of the property in 2015 (scored 155). It's an amazing area with tons of deer and turkey and within a 20 minute drive of Marble Falls which is a great little city. I would jump all over this lease if the price is right. You won't be killing bruisers every year like you would in far south Texas but you will see plenty of deer and have a lot better surroundings. I wish every day that we still had our place down there.. best place on earth.

Target rich environment with occasional exotics. If you guys can hold off killing young deer it'll be awesome!! 140s could be the norm in the area of it's done right....add protein and the sky is the limit.
