How Many is Too Many?

How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 04:11 PM

I'm heading out in the morning for deer camp. Started getting my stuff together last night and deciding on what guns to take. Narrowed it down to 5 rifles and 2 pistols. Remington 700 in 223, 300BO, and 6.5 CM, 308AR, AR-15 with 300BO and 223 uppers, my carry pistol and a 22 pistol. How many guns do y'all take with you to camp.

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 04:14 PM

I just need 1 rifle and 1 pistol...
Posted By: pertnear

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 04:15 PM

I usually only take one & usually a .270. If I have a problem or break down there is a spare rifle already at camp. And of course, I can always shoot a deer the next weekend if necessary. smile

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 04:20 PM

Don't feel bad, I have 3 ready to go in the case - 308, 7-08, 7MM RUM, will take AR Suppressed SBR, 22 suppressed pistol and 10-22 and carry gun - 9MM.

My wife asks if I'm going to war, and my response is "better to be prepared". A few years back, I made it all the way to camp 2 1/2 hours away and realized I left my rifle's bolt in the safe. That was my only rifle I took with me. After that experience I always take a backup.

Only one gun
Posted By: Wilhunt

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 04:24 PM

Usually one, a 30-06...may take a 243 just to be on the safe side.
Posted By: ZK-315

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 04:40 PM

Usually just my 30-06 and 9mm. I keep hoping that one day a hog will walk close enough to my stand to use my 9mm on it.

If I think my wife is going to hunt, her 22-250 and her .380 will accompany us.

Less is more. I know guys who can't help but load the entire truck when they go hunting, so much extra effort and junk in your way.

Don't forget all the ammo for that arsenal. grin

I'm gonna carry the daughters single-six with ratshot in it on my hip...cause I am. These blinds on this new lease are mostly ground blinds, and the opposite of "tight".

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 05:05 PM

If you stop somewhere to eat, etc., make sure you don't have all kinds of hunting/shooting stickers on your truck. It just means "weapons cache here" to a smash-and-grab thug/meth head.
Posted By: DQKN

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 05:06 PM

I end up taking AR 15, 30-06, 243, and a 12 gauge, but I hunt about 15 minuets from the Mexican boarder(south of ozona down pandale road.) never know if I will ever be in a gun fight.

I don't stop when I'm riding solo. When the wife and kiddo are riding with me I gotta go to Buc-ees, stop for kolaches, pee breaks, etc. I point it West and set the cruise control.

That makes sense, never know when a side arm will come in handy, I'd just have a hard time carrying 3-4 rifles to the stand LOL

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 05:15 PM

Take my old trusty Rem 270 for deer, 17HMR for coyotes and others critters and 410 shotgun. If I want to chase some quail around.

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 05:16 PM

Always take my Rem700 .223, Win70 .270, Shotgun, S&W M&P Shield 9mm, and Savage .22

Never know what opportunities might present themselves!

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 05:27 PM

Take along 223 AR, 243, 270 or 308, 12 ga, 45 side arm. Carry one rifle and side arm. Used to take one rifle, trip and fell down knock scope off, learn to take backup.

WOW....I guess you have to play with your toys at some point. Sounds like some of you have shootout fantasies with getting into some gun fight or something out here in the "Wild West".... hammer

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 05:51 PM

I take one rifle that I intend to use, and another as a backup. All the others stay in the safe. No way I'm leaving anything more than what I need outside my safe.

While I always take ammo as well, I have backup boxes in my trailer for those times when I, or a friend, should forget to bring it.

If you are transporting that many firearms in your vehicle, I would strongly suggest you never take your eyes off it. Too many sad songs played around these forums from those who have lost firearms to thieves. Just like prostitutes working a truck stop, I can assure you there will be thieves out there this weekend looking for opportunities.

Well, on some ranches along the "reever"...but still, you'd be up against full-auto.

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 06:05 PM

I take my 7-08 for the deer, my 9mm on my hip, my AR because I'm in South Texas, and my 12 gauge for dove and Quail if we get bored.
Posted By: Txhillbilly

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 06:34 PM

I usually take a bolt action for deer hunting, either an AR10/15 for pigs, and my 44 magnum revolver for 50 yard and under shots.

I get bored taking the same rifle to the stand every hunt. I'll be at the ranch for 10 days and we have a variety of animals. I usually will take a suppressed Blackout with subs and a full power rifle to the stand along with the supressed 22 pistol.

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 06:43 PM

I always take at least two hunting rifles and four boxes of ammo for each. Got to have a back-up plan. One handgun and one shotty.

I usually take one high caliber rifle and I am seldom without my Glock 45

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 07:16 PM

I'll have my 300 WSM as the main choice for sitting in the blind, probably my .25-06 or maybe one of the 25 WSSM as a backup, the 6.8 SPC AR-15 as the truck gun, and the 10mm on my hip. And, I'll probably bring a .22 pistol for plinking and my normal 9mm carry piece to get some trigger time with it. Yeah, six seems like a well rounded and balanced number for one guy hunting for 2 days. nuts

Re: How Many is Too Many? - 11/04/15 07:35 PM

When I was a teenager just starting out, the family who I hunted with all carried a pistol along with their rifle and they also liked to keep a few extra rifles and shotguns back at camp. I never understood why. No pistil is more powerful then a rifle, and I can only shoot one thing at a time, so I've always just had my rifle. Same thing when going to Alaska. My .338 is a lot better bear gun then any pistol.

What do you do with extra guns on a hunting trip?

I'm may be old fashioned but I just bring a deer rifle of various flavors and my pistol that stays in the truck

On long hunte I take a backup deer gun in case something goes wrong

I always have my .22 mag and .223 in the Ranger year round. My .270 is go to rifle for any deer here or in West Texas. I am going to switch from crossbow to compound now that general season is here. That way I have more room for a rifle if I need it.

Pistol for varmints of all shapes/sizes, especially those encountered on the road.
Truck rifle/backup gun
Deer rifle

Only the deer rifle goes to the stand, the others stay in the truck while I'm hunting.

I will take my main hunting rifle and one backup, an AR for poking around at night looking for the pigs, and one pistol besides my truck pistol if the main focus for the weekend is hunting. When I actually go to hunt I will have my main rifle and a pistol, normally either a 1911 or USP45.

Now if we are just going to the ranch for the weekend and we are planning on doing some shooting then all bets are off. smile I have gone out there for a long weekend and had 12-14 different firearms with me, why have them if you are not going to take them out and use em' from time to time? Rifle wise I take a 30-06 and a 7mm mag. I never go out to the ranch without my scatter gun either, too many meth heads around. If it came to me having to defend the house and myself I'd rather be shooting a scatter gun versus a rifle. Way too much funny business driving around the roads at night.

every year in late sept i starting shooting a couple rifle each week till i select the travel team
i am am looking for the one that speaks to me, the one that speaks the loudest will go all season and the rest get to set in the safe and think about how they will do better next try out.
i carry a 22-250 year round so it is the back up.

since i am not attacking anyone or defending anyplace the ar stays home unless i am traveling south of SA then it rides on the dash.
