Coleman Updates? - 11/10/14 04:56 PM

I am heading back to the lease on Friday. Opening weekend was extremely slow. Any reports of rut activity north west of town on 84?

We are in the Santa Anna area & this past weekend the young bucks were roaming looking for does. The bright moon hurt the morning movement ,but the evening hunts were alright.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 11/11/14 04:19 AM

Got blanked! Ain't seen squat. Been here since Friday, hunted real hard today. The deer have been snacking while I've been snoring. Full moon and 20mph winds kept them bedded. I usually see young bucks playing and older ones breaking away about now with good rut sign around the 13th. I coukdn't make it opening weekend and I can't get back this coming weekend, so hopefully the rut stalls a few days so I can see some action in a couple weeks. Good luck!

P.S. the wabbits population is booming, after watching them for the past few days I come to the conclusion that they are dumber than quail

Re: Coleman Updates? - 11/11/14 03:48 PM

I think our leases are fairly close. Morning activity this past weekend was nonexistent, but deer were moving late in the evenings. The bucks were still travelling in groups, but that won't last much longer. Good Luck!

Hey give it time, we had a company lease on the McCulloch county line there on the north side of hte county,
on the Colorado river, and remember things didnt get cooking til week before tnxgiving around! It was the Millers
Ranch just north of Brady, was a great place to hunt, lots of deer, turkey, and one large cat in 1999!....

gud luck with your hunts, be patient

I hunt bout 2 miles from Hords Creek Lake and I have seen a lot of rut activity. Lots of bucks grunting and chasing. Mostly younger bucks but seen a couple mature ones. However, most of this has been in the mornings. Evenings have been pretty slow. Good luck this weekend!

Im in the blind right now. Saw the buck I've been after from about 300 yards and went into the brush. Got 4 does in the food plot and about 10 more minutes of shooting light though! This is the most deer Ive seen in the evening yet. Cold weather definitely has em moving!

I did not really see much of anything at my place just east of Novice. Mornings have been dead all season so far.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 11/19/14 02:13 PM

Last weekend was slow again for us with the exception of a black buck (doe) being shot. This was the first one on our property, but we have seen them from time to time.

In regards to WT we will be back at it Sunday morning through Tuesday. Should be a sloppy mess as our roads are not great - time to get my walking in. We have not seen many deer chasing or other rutting signs. I know it's going on just not seeing it. So far pretty disappointing year for us.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 11/23/14 10:13 PM

First hard chasing I have seen all season this morning. On the drive in this morning (from Dallas) I saw the biggest buck I have ever seen on the hoof chasing a doe in the middle of the dang road. This is in southern coleman county. He was about .5 miles from my lease

Fast forward to the morning hunt saw three good bucks chasing hard. One had a doe running straight up a dang mountain. Activity was outstanding this morning until the wind really picked up at 1130 or so. Been at it all day, hopefully this wind will die down.

I could have missed it or just been unlucky but this is the first of the bigger boys I have seen chasing and have hunted a few days every week since General opener.

Were in brown co,near grosvenor, damn depressing .. very little activity on camera, only a couple deer in 2 weeks, no hogs.. most activity on trail, one decent buck once at one feeder.. was gonna hunt thru Wednesday morning, may not stay that long..

Re: Coleman Updates? - 11/24/14 12:39 AM

I was out last Monday thru Friday morning in northern Coleman. Monday i saw 4 different bucks more interested in eating than chasing. Tuesday morning I had a mature 8 on the heels of a doe. Activity slowly picked up all week.

Thursday and Friday morning we found several doe all holding in one area and there did not appear to be much buck activity in this area.

I personally do not believe the majority of does were quite ready yet but would not believe if things picked up over the weekend. Friday afternoon we did see 2 buck coming to chase a doe on a neighboring high fence ranch.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 11/24/14 02:46 PM

I decided to skip this last weekend and on the fence with my decision. From what I understand the sky dumped on our property all day and into the night Saturday followed by a very windy sunday. I do not like being out there in the rain as it gets pretty nasty.

The deer on our place seemed to be running 2 weeks ago. With that said, I am curious if the actual rut has not hit yet or if that was an early teaser. In the past I have had the best luck the weekend before thanksgiving. Any opinions on this? I am in the Novice area.

Only thing i can add is, yes, its muddy... nothing seen last night and this morning..

Re: Coleman Updates? - 11/24/14 03:53 PM

Been out the last 2 weekends and young bucks are chasing but big boys still just eating. I've been hunting the same place for 7 years and the rut always happens between the last of November thru 2nd weekend in December.

Be careful the rain seemed to have flushed the rattle bugs out, shot 2 on Sunday.

Heading out in the morning. I hope it's a good one.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 11/27/14 04:44 PM

We were out at our lease in Burkett all last week. Every buck was with a doe (chasing or following). Only saw one good buck. Couldn't get a shot since he was cutting through brush after a doe both days I saw him.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 11/30/14 03:13 AM

Well I wasn't in Coleman county but not far from it at all. Southern end of Callahan county. We hunted all last week and saw 2 bucks, one which my youngest harvested. Saw a doe and her older fawn just by chance running hard through some brush behind me as I was taking care of nature. Was weird. Tons of sign left over from the Saturday all day rain(11/22) but had nothing coming into the feeders all week. Month before we had lots of activity on the cameras and then seemed to just shut down.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 11/30/14 02:03 PM

Slow here in east Coleman. If a deer does come to the feeder it does not stay long. I have not seen any sign of rut because I am not seeing deer. It appears to be getting slower each weekend that I come. Strange season for sure. In years past I have always seen plenty of deer and the rut usually winds down at thanksgiving.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 12/01/14 04:11 AM

I am south of Coleman a little ways and it has been the same for us. Plenty of vegetation and the rut seemed shorter than normal. Moved out with my sister to our open country and saw plenty of movement. Feeders aren't important to them.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 12/01/14 04:22 PM

We hunted basically all last week minus thanksgiving day.

Observations: 11/21-11/24
First signs of chasing we had seen all year. Bucks were chasing hard. See previous post in this thread. Bucks would not even look at the feeders as they jogged 2 ft passed it.

Observations: 11/26-11/28
Saw more does in this time frame then we have all year and all in large groups. out of all the groups we saw none were being pushed by bucks. Also first time this year that we had bucks eating at the feeders.

No idea what this means, as I'm no expert...just reporting back.

Also stopped by the Shoppin Baskit to check out the big buck contest. It may just be me, but it seems there are far fewer deer on the board this year than in previous years. Heck, in the youth contest I only saw two submissions.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 12/02/14 02:44 PM

Very slow season for us. 3 of our hunters did not see one deer on saturday evenging. That is not common for us. Last year we averaged from 8 to 15 deer feeding at the same time (not the largest heard but at least something to watch). I can probably count on 2 hands how many deer I have seen all season so far. Checked my camera and november shots were mostly at night. Very few during the day. I sure wish something would change.

Re: Coleman Updates? - 12/02/14 06:55 PM

Sounds like you may have a lion in the area. I shot one just north of town back in August. It was walking directly away when I shot. I spun it around but it was able to hit the thicket. Didn't get enough blood to warrant trying to track it in knee deep grass and snakes.

I have been trying to find a lease in Coleman for the past 5 years. I love that area!
