Part II of Nav's "Now that Im finally at a computer" - 10/28/14 07:32 PM

Which buck is wider? How wide are they? Which buck will score more? Both of these bucks are from AR counties. popcorn
Nav's buck-

A buck from Goliad County-

your buck from goliad is a tad wider and would score little more..imo

Re: Part II of Nav's "Now that I am at a computer" - 10/28/14 07:40 PM

I think the G4s and C4s on Nav's buck will contribute enough to barely edge out Goliad on a gross score.
They are dang close. Goliad is a touch wider.

Nav's buck scores more, weighs more and is wider.... That was easy county is dead give away

I'm gonna say bottom is wider, 14.5" top right at 13" top will out score being a main frame 10

Re: Part II of Nav's "Now that I am at a computer" - 10/28/14 07:44 PM

I don't know, that last pic makes the Goliad Co buck look HUGE!

Nav's buck looks completely different to me in tc pics and ldp's. Looks like twice the deer in the ldp's.

Ignoring that this is probably a trick question..

Goliad is wider say 14.5 inches Nav's was 13 and something 5 or 6 eighths.

And as a WAG score is similar.

I bet a 12 pack. You might get me on score (g1's and kickers) but that's it

goliad = coastal import

Re: Part II of Nav's "Now that I am at a computer" - 10/28/14 08:39 PM

I agree the pics of Nav's buck made it look much smaller than the real deal, but I still think the pics of that buck from Goliad Cnty look bigger, and an older deer. Gross score is higher in the Goliad buck (brow tines), and that buck is over 14 inches wide, maybe pushing 15 inches based on the age of that buck and him having big dumbo ears.

Re: Part II of Nav's "Now that I am at a computer" - 10/29/14 12:24 AM

My question to STX, are both deer dead so we have hard numbers or are we going by an estimate of yours and hard numbers on Nav's?

I assumed both were dead deer, but that has not been stated yet.

I still stand by my original guesstimate of goliad deer being heavier, wider and scoring more. Sorry BOBO happy3

I used to hunt in Leon County and didn't really find the deer to be large bodied, but that could just be because all of the older bucks didn't exist.

For this reason, and because it just looks bigger, I gotta go with Old Man Winter.

Re: Part II of Nav's "Now that I am at a computer" - 10/29/14 03:49 PM

Last minute waffle:

Nav = 13 6/8 and 135 inches
STX = 14 and 133

edited for additional waffling

Re: Part II of Nav's "Now that I am at a computer" - 10/29/14 03:49 PM

I'm obviously doing something wrong....I get STX's buck in to upper 140's every time I look at it. That last pic may have me exaggerating tine length, but I'm getting hi 40's low 50's on a 16 inch spread every time I go at it.
Posted By: Jkd106

Re: Part II of Nav's "Now that I am at a computer" - 10/29/14 03:51 PM

I found the dead pic, it makes a difference. Nav's deer is gonna bump 140, still think Stx is low to mid 120s

Okay....for the width part grin They both were 13 6/8" inside spread. So neither bucks was wider or narrow than the other one. Some got the spread right (after some waffling) on one but not the other.... As far as score some really blew it. hammer Nav' bucks grossed 144 5/8" and the buck my Dad killed grossed 129 7/8". So Nav's was bigger by a lot.

Yea after seeing dead pics, of Nav's, no doubt he was bigger than the TC pics showed , very nice deer, I under estimated the Goliad, big 8s look better on the wall than the tape, but that gets a lot of people. Both super deer and I love this forum. Thanks Stx for a fun thread. I believe this helps everyone.

This thread was about the problems we have when trying to judge deer from pics and trying to get guesses on spreads for AR's for pics. What angle the buck is standing in a pic can change what we see and how we see it. It can humble anyone. I miss my share on here.
The Goliad buck was killed in late Dec 2012 in a year that it only rained 9" from May till Jan. He was 7+ on age and poor as a snake. He did show up till after Thanksgiving on TC. I had not seen a deer on the ground here or found a shed so I was working off guesses just like this thread was about.
If I had been Nav and had those pics to go by I still don't think I could have made the decision to shoot without study the deer long and hard when he was standing in front of me.

Thanks and you were right about body weight in the county.. use to not see a deer over 120lbs just for the reason of there not being many bucks over 3yrs old. I almost didn't get this one loaded in the buggy by myself... been some big changes in the county the last few years

Yea Nav people don't realize, that mass and long MB, can really separate two classes of deer. IMO You gain 10" in those areas, you go from a 130 to a 140 and to me that is a big gap.

You missed location and time of the year.. like comparing a hill country deer to panhandle.
Coastal prairie deer was 110lb. East Texas had probably 40 plus on it. Not all sub species have same ear length but you probably knew that already

the 35inches of mass, almost 43 inches on the MBs helped him alot

In that i do see it but not the trail cam pic wich are always put you off around 10-20 either way but that is a heck of a bow kill anyway , i was not trying to be a troll or prove who i have had the plesure in working with but only trying to state that i am not a first year hunter or roike Biologist i have done my time in the field , anyhow thats beside the point great buck and i will keep my opions to myslef form now on.If someone wants my help or needs anything that i can help with i will.

The beams are what got most people on the score, I am sure. From your head on pictures, it is hard to tell. When I went back and looked at the profile pictures, you can see the beam length with the way they curve down and back up. Great buck again, Amigo cheers
