moldy corn

First time I've had this happen in my feeder. What would cause it to start molding. Top was on tight and seemed to be sealed like it should. Just dumped probably 100 plus pounds out for the hogs to destroy. Deer were still eating it on pics last few days. But what am I missing on why it would just start.

Moisture too high in the corn, condensation in the feeder, some moisture in the last corn you put in from getting wet.

That possibly caused by that short cool front we had? Condensation could have built up inside where the corn was still warm? Good thing you noticed and drained the tank too.

Everything was dry before and corn was dusty as can be. But my stand also was leaking badly to and it's never done that either. Glad I figured it out now instead of right before the season.

Didn't think about that cool down causing it.

What kind of lid are you using? I had built a new feeder last year and it had the bolt style ring with a gasket on the lid. It did the same thing and held in any moisture that was in the corn and molded it. Switched to the galvanized lids and no other issues.

Been using this feeder for past 3 or 4 years and never had an issue til today.

Yeah. the day before the front blew through, it was in the 100* mark for most of us and had been in the upper 90's for weeks, then drop it down to 60* with added atmospheric moisture....I bet if your hands had been cold, you could have stuck them in that corn and it was at least 95+* in the middle.

Allot of the corn sold for deer, is corn that tested to high for other types of consumption, for mold and toxins (especially aflotoxins) at least that's what Bluebonnet and Munster feed mills told me several years ago. So it may already have a higher propensity to spoil IDK?

Sure a good reminder that we all need to keep eye on things.

I've bought it at Walmart that way this time of year. It gets rushed out before fully drying. You'll have parts of the bag with clumps surrounded by dry corn. They did fully refund my money plus a gift card for the time and hassle.

Clogged feeders can do this from trashy unclean corn. All corn is harvested and stored with moisture in it. Dusty corn means nothing really other than it was dusty. To tight of a lid with a clogged feeder will cause condensation if the feeder is clogged or feeding small amounts daily. The cool weather at night followed by high heat during the day is tough on feeders when they clog.

It spun freely but did have some clumps in it when I was manually cycling it out. I'm sure it's a combo of things but atleast the hogs will have a few good last meals before I slaughter them. I'm getting anywhere from 200 to 500 a pics a week of hogs so it's time to die.

I had the same thing happened to me 2 years ago. I discovered it when I went to fill the feeders. I had it on a slow throw for about 3 months during the off season. When I opened the lid I almost puked. I ended up having to take the feeder home and scrub it out with a diluted bleach amd water mix. It was raunchy. Had maggots in it . I still have no clue how or why. Must've been a contaminated bag.

I have seen large capacity feeders out in dry climate of West Texas around Dryden that would mold when they only threw a little corn and tried to make the feeder last 3 months. That heat will build up in the corn/feeder and cause the feeder to sweat at night. It will collect under the lid then rain down on the corn during the day. Heating up and doing the same thing over and over.

I had the same problem with Walmart corn last year. I got a full refund ... but they kept selling the corn!!!!
