New to the forum - 07/31/14 02:50 PM

I've been lurking on this site for about a year and have never posted anything. I just got back into hunting after about a 25 year break (hunted quail and deer back in AZ in high school. But it was high school, so my main game was not living in the wild if you know what I mean). Now I'm teaching my son because he's getting old enough to need these lessons. This year, I ante'd up and went in on a lease with a buddy and now I am looking for a rifle for the boy. I have to say for the first year at the lease, this isn't a cheap hobby, but next year, I shouldn't need new feeders, cameras and fences and all the other stuff to bring out the game.

Set up the feeders and the cams about 2 weeks ago, went back and checked the cams and there are deer there! Only problem is, now I have the FEVER!!!

Just wanted to thank everyone for the wealth of information/opinions. I've learned a lot. Now that I've watched for a bit, I may start commenting more.

Thanks again.

Well you have the first lesson down good "this isn't a cheap hobby"! Once you're exposed to "the FEVER" you're doomed - THERE IS NO CURE!

....but Kudos for gettin' the kids involved!

Remember: "Man can't have too many guns"

You think you waited a long time - I used to hunt a lot when I was a kid, but I got married, had a couple of kids, and did everything except hunt for 35 years. Then I had a chance to go to my boss's ranch to deer hunt. He asked me to kill a "cull", and I shot a 7 point buck with weirdly bent antlers. To most of the hunters on this site, it would be one to just get rid of, but to me it was a trophy. It lit the fire for me to get back into hunting, and now I'm on a lease, bought a couple of rifles, shotgun, compound bow, and crossbow, made a pig pipe, and I'm ready to go. I (belatedly) took my older son out last year and he shot his first deer (at 32 years old)and he's ready for the hunt, too.
That fever can be pretty powerful.
Welcome to the forum! Good luck this year.

I would say the perfect rifle for your son is a 270 shooting 130 grain nosler ballistic tip.

Welcome. I live just south of ya in Fair Oaks.

Always something hunting related to drop some change on, but the initial gear accumulation can add up.

BTW. Lennie, I think the biggest plus, is you taking the opportunity to allow your son a chance to enjoy and learn a life long tradition possibly, with "the old man". Kids have very few positive options these days, and hunting has many truths in it to learn.
