Age guesses?

Age guesses? - 11/29/13 01:42 PM

I got within 10 yards of this guy when spot-and-stalking last weekend. Of course, he looked like a monster under those circumstances, but I didn't take a shot.

I'm thinking he's 3.5, but a couple of things about him make me wonder if I'm off.

I agree with 3.5 - could be 4.5 but I think it's the cold that makes his body look a bit bigger.

I wanna put him at 5...

He certainly has things that make you think 3 or 4, but I see a few that make me lean to 5.

Yeah. Maybe he's just run down from the rut? He never hit a feeder until the last couple of weeks.

It was a rush getting close to him. He couldn't figure out what I was. We were on opposite sides of a berm so all he really saw was my head.

Funny thing was, he was between me and my truck and had walked within 10 feet of it. Guess vehicles don't bother him much, huh?

I've got my heart set on two others, so he likely gets a pass from me. Plus, he tried to grow G4's this year and I'm hopeful he will next year. I have 8's by the dozen but have only seen 3 tens and hope they all grow.

I knows it's not in line with the rest of you, but I'm thinking he's older. 3.5 yr old deer still look young and spry. Some deer are just hard to age by looking. He could be 3.5, but he could be 7.5. Something about this guy makes me feel like he is either in his peak year , or already on the decline. He has a 3.5yr old neck size and brisket size, but he's graying a little, and his skin doesn't look like it's stretched tight over muscle. He doesn't have good mass for his spread and time length. I feel like old deer tend to come closer to maximum spread and tine length without achieving maximum mass more often than young deer. Of course I've seen it both ways.

The responses had me curious, so I looked at more pics of him and noticed a slit on his right ear. That jarred my memory and I looked at some older pics. Here he is a year ago.

He's sure changed a lot. I'm going with 3.5 to 4.5 this year. Looks 3.5 or younger last year.

90 percent certain it's the same buck based on that slit in his ear.
