New Place. Better than I could have hoped for! - 11/05/13 01:46 AM
Hello all. I just bought a new place in Erath county in June. It's only 37 acres, but it's enough for me to let my three small boys grow up learning about the outdoors. However as they are young still (6,4,1) opening weekend was for me to do some hunting. I had 9 different bucks on the camera and only one that I felt was a shooter other than two spikes.
Opening morning, much to my surprise had a bunch of duck hunters on my neighboring property who quickly became a bunch of young guys having a party since there were no ducks coming in. Car alarms going off, shooting and yelling. About as bad as it could be for my small place. I saw a coyote and 2 deer very briefly.
Saturday evening was pretty slow as well. A doe and a six point, but no duck hunters.
Sunday morning, I had pretty much decided I would take a doe, cause I am ready to refill the freezer. Twenty minutes after light, a doe came out and began to eat corn. After about a minute, a big boy came out chasing her nose to ground. It only took a second to decide he was the one I was after. Since he was pushing her pretty hard, I felt I needed to take the shot pretty quickly. He stopped about 90 yards out quartering away. I took the shot. After following a blood trail for about 100 yards, I found him piled up on top of a cedar brush pile of all places. My biggest deer to date, I feel truly blessed! The pic with me in it is outside Kenny Fred's in Bluffdale (thanks Erathkid for the recommendation, great place). Sorry for the long first post but I hope you enjoyed the story.
Any ideas on what he will score? 130-135 is best I can tell.
Thanks,
