Opening Weekend brief description, how was it.... - 11/02/08 08:24 PM

I only got to hunt opening evening and Sunday morning but it sucked so I didn't stay till Sunday eveing. Rundown
- saw only a handful of deer
- only heard one shot out of two hunts in wide open country
- Didn't see one truck deer from Abilene to Mckinney

Just heard from one at our lease in Haskell. Not too much shooting going on around our place, only 4 shots heard in the last 2 days. He did see a nice one Friday while checking his feeder but never saw him again. You live in McKinney BIL?

Re: Opening Weekend brief description.... - 11/03/08 12:37 AM

Daughter # 3 and I guided. Saw quite a few young bucks (2.5 and 3.5) and very few does. Saw one 10 point that couldn't have been over 4.5 with G-3s that were at least 12 inches long. Eyeball score on him was mid 140's.

Only hunting does on this ranch this year. Ended up with 1 doe that field dressed at 65 lbs. Mostly it was too many bucks near the feeders and too hot.

Waiting for cooler weather and hoping for rain.

Woke this morning and went to church. After church went for Chinese food. Saw a bit of the cowgirls getting whopped and here I am

Opening Weekend brief description, how was it....

Well, I got back from Utopia on Weds, and back into work Friday night, Saturday night, tonight and tomorrow night.

In other words, my long change ended and I'm back to work for three weeks.

I won't get to stands until 11/22, but that's fine with me. Let everybody else shoot and run the deer into my area like usual.

That's the one drawback to my shift work schedule...on the other hand, when I go each time...I get to hunt for 2 weeks at a time

Re: Opening Weekend brief description.... - 11/03/08 12:44 AM

I got a nice axis last week, so I gave opening weekend a miss. I did see two decent bucks and several does being dropped off for processing at the Farmer's Market in Boerne (was dropping by to pick up my axis meat)....

About the same south of Nolan. Saw a lot of deer and heard a few shots, but no big deer on the ground. A buddy at the lease shot at a big 9 point, but missed. Did see one good deer in a truck at the Dairy Queen in Clyde on the way home. All in all not a bad opener with the 80 degree temps.

Two does shot on our lease with one taken by my 13 YO son. His 9th deer and good shot too. The other doe was the first one ever taken by another hunter. Too warm but a good weekend with my son and buddies. I'd do it again.

North Central near St. Jo, no deer ,wasps, hot dry,and the loudest cowboys working cattle ever on the place across the county road. Left the gate at 6:30 pm and nearly got run over by a very large heavy main beam buck at 6:34 on the main road.

Able to take a doe, else no others sighted. Checked the game camera and noted a lot of pre-season activity. Hopefully, things will pick up with cooler weather.

Re: Opening Weekend brief description, how was it.... - 11/03/08 03:51 AM

I hunted saturday and didnt bother on sunday. It was just too hot. I stayed in the stand all day saturday and didnt see anything. I was sitting there, stripped down bare footed with my overalls pulled up to my knees, just hot. And then the huge swarm of lady bugs attacked. They were relentless. I never knew there were that many lady bugs in the whole world. They covered every inch of my stand and tried to fly into every hole in my body. They drove me insane. I now hate lady bugs. Seriously, I hate them. That was my opening weekend.

Hopefully next weekend is better.

Re: Opening Weekend brief description, how was it.... - 11/03/08 03:57 AM

I went to my place in Olney this weekend. I only saw one doe. The wife missed a nice buck and my dad missed a doe. I only hunted Saturday night. I just really didn't feel much like hunting this weekend. I have been every weekend since Deer season has opened and since I got back from a week in Georgia on friday I wanted to relax more than hunt. Will hit it hard next weekend at my good lease since the rut is getting kicked up.

Re: Opening Weekend brief description, how was it.... - 11/03/08 05:20 PM

Hunted the lease at Zavalla in Angelina County. Killed a spike at 0720 on Saturday morning. He came out of a trail at 15 yards from my stand. Still hunted on the creek that night and didn't see anything.

Got a doe Sunday moring at 0725 at the same exact spot as the spike. Hunted the stand again Sunday night and didn't see anything.

I let a friends son hunt my stand Saturday night and he killed a young nubbin buck right at sunset. He was shooting a 30/30 and hit it at 110 yards. He thought it was a doe.

Didn't hear too much shooting as normal for opening week end. I think a total 20 dear was taken from our 17 person, 1250 acre lease. One guy let 7 spikes walk. A few hogs were taken.

Re: Opening Weekend brief description, how was it.... - 11/03/08 05:59 PM

It was foggy in Brazos county until about 9:30 am. I thought I was going to get lost driving through the pasture to get to where I was hunting because I don't follow a road to the area where my stand is. There was a deer eating some of my corn around 7am but it was so foggy i couldn't see what it was until it walked away. It was a buck but i have no idea how many points it had on it. I was glad I didn't shoot or know what it was and wanted to shoot him because one of my dad's cows was laying in the grass behind where he was with her calf that was only a few days old. I didn't see anything the rest of the morning and I left at 11am for a break because I was getting discouraged. Plus the guy on the property behind me I think ran everything away with all of his shooting.

I went out for the evening at 2pm in the afternoon and didn't see anything until 4:45 or so. It was so freaking hot. The sun was on me inside my stand and I thought I was going to get sunburned. That and I hate mosquitoes. They were biting me through my pants. I'd rather sit in the cold than deal with mosquitoes! A little 4 point came out that I had seen on Friday that I already told myself I wouldn't shoot. A few minutes later he had a friend come out of the same place he did and I ended up shooting him. He was an average sized 8 point. At first I thought he was a 7 point, but when I walked up to him on the ground I saw he had an extra little point that my bad eyes couldn't see from that far away.

I sat in my stand on Friday evening in shorts because it was hot that day too to see what was out there and saw a group of 2 big does and a smaller doe and then another group of 2 big does and then that little 4 point.

It wasn't very eventful this weekend.

Runnels County.
Saturday Morning, lots of does and a few young bucks, lots of turkey. Lots of corn thieving coons Didnt see anything Saturday night till right at dark.
Sunday morning, passed on an about 3.5 yo 8 pt. Hes a little to small, should be a great deer next year. Saw a few more does. more corn thieving coons. Sunday night, no deer just turkeys and the same corn thieving coons!

Sunday night, same lease. My buddys grandpa shot a small probly 4.5 yo 8 pt cull.

There has been 1 monster buck, hes at least a 10 spotted, and we have probly 4 mature 8's running around. Cant wait to see one of them!
Its too damn hot, cant wait to get cold!

Hunted northwest of St Jo in Montague County. Lots of does seen. Buddy had a young six run around the stand a couple of times chasing a doe. My brother shot one of the does. Looking for more action with the cool front later in the week.

I tried out the Tink's smoke sticks this weekend.. The deer in my area are either immune or have amazing will power and are able to resist the tempting smell of burning doe urine. I didn't attract one single buck.

lots of hogs. shot about an 80 pounder about 9am sat morning in nacogdoches county. Few nice bucks came off the lease aswell. my brother missed a nice tall 8 at first light sat morning in llano county.

Schleicher County. Does and young bucks at the feeders. The deer were sitting down tight. Kicked out several on a spot and stalk. Still green and mucho acorns. Its going to be real good when it cools off. Saw a nice one at the hardware store. Don't think it will win the contest.

Re: Opening Weekend brief description, how was it.... - 11/05/08 03:13 PM

We hunted in west TX, Saturday thru Monday, five of us. Killed total of 3 javelina, one cull 8-point, and one decent 10-point. I didn't hear any shots other than ours. Our canyon flooded at the beginning of October, and this has really changed how/where the deer are traveling. We saw a ton of mule deer(mostly doe), and very few whitetail.. weird!

Posted By: Tres

Re: Opening Weekend brief description, how was it.... - 11/05/08 10:02 PM

We had a suprisingly good weekend despite the warm weather, all total saw 13 bucks, took one spike, 20 something doe and two hogs, one of which is in a cooler on ice.

Had a buddy shoot at a nice eight on the move, couldn't get him to stop, and missed.

Best opening weekend at our place ever. Can't wait to get back up.

Hunted in Trinity County. Thought it was WWIII. Shots everywhere. No deer in morning two small deer evening, more shots. Saw same two deer sunday evening, more shots. Saw crabclaw buck Monday evening, more shots. Someone was busy, but not I.

Re: Opening Weekend brief description, how was it.... - 11/05/08 10:46 PM

LMAO! I used to hunt in Trinity also and it was always like that. We started thinking it was the duck hunters and not deer hunters or so we had hoped!

Re: Opening Weekend brief description, how was it.... - 11/05/08 11:02 PM

I was sure hoping it was ducks falling or shots missing, but my land is in a corner of a large timber co. land and I have been on their place a few times off season. I didn't see any sign for ducks to be also its very dry, looks like west texas except for the green trees. Grass is a nasty brown. Scared to have fire. Not sure if leaves are turnig colors from temp and daylight or drought. Maybe with the 40% chance of rain tomorrow, it will get better. Very foggy, but 40's in morning sun, mon. Sat was 60 in morning. I am going to give it another shot this weekend. Love sitting in the woods. Wasps and I do not get along though. Had a few battles with these little jets. They won. Left stand and had a few cold beers. refreshing.

Pretty good weekend in San Saba county.

4 of the 5 hunters on my lease harvested a deer:

- One cull buck (mine)
- One big 6 pointer
- One decent 8 pointer
- One pretty big 9 pointer

Now, I have my eye on this big boy!!......
