Most Underrated Deer Hunting Advice - 08/09/13 03:20 AM

What is it in your opinion?

"Hunt the wind", "Use coverscent", "Dress up in camo", etc..

Re: Most Underrated Deer Hunting Advice - 08/09/13 03:26 AM

I don't know that rifle hunting makes much difference but I can tell you that if you don't have a good wind while bow hunting all the cover scent and camo you can afford is not going to help you.

It's okay to let a deer walk, even if there's a possibility that a neighbor will shoot it.

Re: Most Underrated Deer Hunting Advice - 08/09/13 03:52 AM

I grew up hunting with a family friend, and would call him my hunting mentor. One evening, after recounting the day's hunt, and telling him where I saw deer, and where I didn't, I asked where he thought a good place would be to hunt the next morning. He said, "Go where the deer are."
Best deer hunting advice. Period.

It's ok to kill a doe for meat rather than killing a 2 1/2 yr old 8 point who barely meets AR's.

You can't eat horns, so Bucks are better meat deer as they are bigger usually.

Re: Most Underrated Deer Hunting Advice - 08/09/13 01:18 PM

Big difference between "hunting" & "finding"!

If you're looking at tracks too often you're seeing where the deer were, not where the deer are!

My definition of underrated also means it's not as common as tips shared most often.

My contribution to the discussion is to hunt during the middle of the week as often as you can. The deer just always seem to know when the weekend arrives. Hunt during the middle of the week and you might be amazed at how much you see.

Look at the horns. Decide if it's a shooter, if so do not look at the horns again. Focus behind the shoulder and control breathing. Exhale, pause, squeeze, bang, buck! Oh....and wind.

Not during hunting season - properly scout, find, pattern deer to have some idea where they are/travel in your hunting area(if you don't know).

During hunting season - spend as much time as you can hunting with the wind in your favor.

You wanna kill the biggest buck on your place? Get the MLD status that allows you to hunt the month of Oct. Big bucks will walk up to a feeder and put their heads down to eat so regular you can time them.

As soon as pre rut activity starts, all bets are off.

Hunt in the rain. As long as it's not a full-blown storm the deer don't mind and you probably have the woods to yourself. I've taken some nice deer in the rain when everyone else had headed in. In fact, a couple times it was likely everyone heading in that moved the deer to me.

#1 Never pass a deer on the first day of the hunt that you'd shoot on the last day. #2 If you want to shoot a big deer you must hunt where big deer live.

South, central, and west Texas. My hill country ranch is the only one with acorns and they typically don't start falling till the last week of Oct. Even then they're not much of an issue because I don't cull my baby spikes. roflmao

A lotta deer means the mast is cleaned up quick and it's back to the feeders they go..
Till the rut kicks in.

I think your all wrong!!!The best piece of advice is to "GO TO THE RESTROOM BEFORE YOU GO TO THE STAND",then apply every thing y'all said after this. It's easier to think about the wind-scent control-stand placement-MLD's-ect... with empty bowels. All kidding aside, looking for good deer sign i.e-tracks,trails and deer crap, then placing your stand accordingly, will get you what you want.
