Private property in Panola county, my dad killed the top buck 3 weeks before I killed the bottom buck. We have never seen genetics like this on our place and have no clue where these guys came from. Any ideas?

almost looks like some northern genes mixed in there. Any high fenced ranches near by that one could have got loose from and started breeding with the native texas deer?

No clue either..there was one similar around our place that ended up just being a 2yo, why it put on that much antler I haven't a clue. Stud bucks you got there.

The first one looks like a possible an antler infection while he were in velvet. This can happen when they get damage on the rack and then an infection and sometimes maggots. They work on the infected area and then either incubate or die. It leaves some strange configurations in the effected area but the rest of the rack is pretty typical.

I think this is proof of what we've all suspected....East Texas in-breeding.

They look like Allison deer to me. They had some escape from the high fence sometime this summer.

See pictures of several each year killed in the swamps of Louisiana. I used to hunt in the marshes along the coast and never seen one come from those areas. Go about 60 miles north into the swamp and wasn't that uncommon. Most didn't get quite that big due to trigger happy coonasses (yep I'm a coonass), but the palmeto horns were fairly common.

Those bucks are freaky looking but those crazy genetics are not all that uncommon for east and northern texas along the Red River.

Like everyone else I think those are pretty awesome looking, just not sure if I'd want my deer to look like that year after year. I say if it's restricted to those 2 deer just be happy you took an awesome pair!

Due to the moose-like genetics we actually named him (the more palmated deer) bullwinkle when we first saw him on camera. Took me 7 weeks to finally connect. Thought about the Allison possibility but would be awful far for those deer to travel...and not sure why they'd stop and stay for so long on our place. No not many thick briars, just pines and hardwoods and some good cover. We always hear about the occasional east texas monsters, now we know they exist! You never know when it could be you

^^^^What he said^^^^. I have a friend who hunts Leon County who missed a similiar type deer opening weekend. When he went back to camp, the lease manager told him about some deer that escaped from a local HF during last summer's fires.

I have seen one buck in the Hill Country yeasr ago that had palmatted horns. He was not as big as either of these two and I do not want to talk about it, because I shot at him and missed.
