Nope. He is close. I would not shoot him. I have seen many like that this year. Not worth the risk.

Not to hijack this thread, but as a new hunter where would you measure this deer to see if he makes AR?

Unfortunately I don't think he would make AR and I would be very, very happy with a buck like that if I took it with my bow. We have the same situation with some bucks inside of our HF.

His ears are out, and his antlers are not outside of them.

He's the classic drawing of the "Illegal Deer" in the outdoor annual on the Antler Restrictions.

From the inside of one main beam to the inside of the other main beam. The ears are a good reference. If his inside spread is right at his ears, then he's right around 13". Check TPWD's website for details.

You will know for sure when you see him up close and personal. He looks like a big deer. So who is to say the ears aren't 16" wide. I've got a deer on my wall with the ears in the alert position and his are 16 1/2 inches.
But looking at the mass he has, IMO, he's wider than 13.

He is wider than 13". He looks mature and I would shoot him. This is the problem with AR and a problem I am glad I don't have in the county I hunt in.

I'd shoot him. I took a buck that is almost identical to this one last year, and he was 14.5" wide. He had a narrow rack that was very tall and had a ton of mass. Good mature deer

It's close. I'd let him walk unless it's the last day of the season and I had yet to put some meat in the freezer.

This. I got to looking at my best deer on the wall and where his horns were in relation to his ears. They were right at them, so I took out the tape and measured the spread again. It was 17.5 inches. Then I measured from ear tip to ear tip. It was almost 15"!

What did they measure before they were mounted. The ear position is most likely not the same on the mounts as the deer actually had. This deer ears are wider than his outside spread and the inside is smaller yet. I would not risk it IMO. Seen to many mature deer with less than 13" spread all over the state.

The same. I asked the taxi to move the ears in to make it look even wider. I didn't like the look he gave me!!!

I agree. He won't even make it as a "closing time" buck.

Like such well-known decisions at the local pub, trying to decide on a buck may follow the same approach as the season draws to a close.
