multiple guns out at once

multiple guns out at once - 11/02/12 04:36 PM

is it lawful in texas, as i cannot find anything against it, to take multiple guns into the field hunting at the same time, so long as individually they comply with texas law?

e.g. heading into ground blind with a 300 win mag bolt (for deer) and 223 semi-auto for hog.

if you say no, please provide link to regulation on TPWD website that says so. thanks

Means and Methods
Firearms
NEW LAW: Silencers may be used to take any wildlife resource; however, all federal, state and local laws continue to apply.

Game animals and game birds may be hunted with any legal firearm, EXCEPT:

•white-tailed deer, mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, and pronghorn antelope may NOT be hunted with rimfire ammunition of any caliber.
•shotguns are the only legal firearm that may be used to hunt Eastern turkey during the spring Eastern turkey season (see County Listing). Rifles and handguns may not be used to hunt Eastern turkey.
•pellet guns and other air guns are NOT LEGAL.
•fully automatic firearms are NOT LEGAL.
•a shotgun is the only legal firearm for hunting migratory game birds (see Definitions - Legal Shotgun).
Nongame Animals (Non-Protected): Any lawful firearm, pellet gun, or other air gun is legal.

Magazine Capacity (number of shells/cartridges allowed): There are no restrictions on the number of shells or cartridges a legal firearm may hold when hunting game animals or game birds (except migratory game birds, see Legal Shotgun).

Muzzleloader: Any firearm that is loaded only through the muzzle. Note: A cap and ball firearm in which the powder and ball are loaded into a cylinder is not a muzzleloader. Muzzleloader deer seasons are restricted to muzzleloading firearms only.

Possession of firearms by felons: A convicted felon, regardless of where the conviction occurred, may not possess or use a firearm (as defined by Penal Code, §46.01) to hunt in this state. Under Penal Code, §46.01, a muzzleloading firearm is lawful if it is an antique or curio firearm manufactured before 1899 or a replica of an antique or curio firearm manufactured before 1899 that does not use rimfire or centerfire ammunition.

I do not see anything that says what you are saying is illegal.

I believe you can take your whole safe out there if you can carry it and not be detected by the deer and hogs. Good luck this weekend!

No and it's never been..You can be in a blind with 10 rifles and
can't shoot but one..They must be in compliance with State Law individually..but how are you or anybody else going to shoot more
than one weapon at a time..I've carried a shotgun for quail/and a
deer rifle several times..to our blinds and gotten a few birds while I watched the does..DD

Re: multiple guns out at once - 11/02/12 05:09 PM

Reminds me of a funny story. A few years ago we had an old doe that we called snorter. Every Time she came in to a feeder she would continually snort and stomp around your blind until she would eventually run all your deer off. I started carrying my trusty old Benjamin pump pellet gun to the blind with me just to irritate that ole winch. I would pump it just enough to burn her butt pretty good and run her off. I guess I was breaking the law. confused2 grin

I have trouble deciding and often bring two rifles to the blind. I brought a rifle , a scoped pistol and a crossbow on a hog/archery deer hunt 3 weeks ago.

Believe he was indicating the time at which this occurred. Opening day is tomorrow...if you are hunting with a rifle three weeks ago...it better be under permit. Just guessing there.

You cannot have a gun with you if you have a bow and broadhead points during archery deer season. The only exceptions are if you have a CHL and have a concealed pistol, or if you are MLD in which case archery season doesn't apply to you.

In other words you can't deer hunt with a bow, and hog hunt with a rifle at the same time if it is archery only deer season.

Thanks for clarifing that. I have never bow hunted and I didn't know that. I assumed he would be shooting hogs with the rifle so he would be legal. You never get to old to learn. grin

At my main stand I have to use 2 guns. I have 2 shooting lanes. One faces East and one faces West. 284 Winchester out the West window and 7mm Mag out the East window. Ruger 44 mag for tracking.

Gosh, some of yall have too much shoulder room or maybe four hands.

I don't think there is anything illegal about it, but it just seems logically easier to have just one rifle (and maybe a pistol, but if you are carrying a rifle it seems like it is overkilll).

pack of hogs come out I shoot with a bolt action. That menas I get one hog. I bring my ar pack of hogs come out, I get a few hogs smile

Re: multiple guns out at once - 11/05/12 03:06 AM

yeah, i saw 35 or so hogs, and all i got was 1 shot with my LA 308, had i brought the AR i would have been able to fire off 10-20 rounds imo.

but, as it is i had way too much gear to haul 1.5 miles to the blind and i am very glad i didn't have one more item to shoulder with me.

Re: multiple guns out at once - 11/05/12 03:32 AM

I've shot 3 hogs from the same sounder with a bolt rifle. Quality shots are better than quantity. If you can get 20 rounds off at the same herd, you aren't aiming. To each his own though, the more dead hogs the better.

Re: multiple guns out at once - 11/05/12 03:40 AM

I normally have two rifles and a pistol. .243 for hogs (or if sissy is hunting) and my BP for deer. .40 just in case I get chased by the boogieman grin

That makes perfect sense, and I had heard that before.
However, here is a bit of a puzzler along the same lines that I am NOT at all sure on.

Would it be legal for me to be out during archery season archery deer hunting with my bow, sitting in the same blind with my girlfriend, who has her rifle along and is rifle hunting hogs??

It seems like it should be fine. She is hunting hogs with a rifle, which she can do at any time, and I am hunting deer with a bow, which is fine since it is archery season.

But at the same time, it just seems like it sure might look suspicious to a warden!

Do any of you all know the answer for sure?

Re: multiple guns out at once - 11/09/12 02:52 AM

I have carried a rifle for deer (.243) and a .17HMR for Turkeys at the same time. Since the .17HMR is NOT legal for deer, is it illegal to have it? the way it is written it says hunting with a rimfire for deer is illegal, it doesn't say possessing it while you have a legal centerfire rifle is illegal....

what do you guys think?

Re: multiple guns out at once - 11/09/12 03:08 AM

I think you're right.

But I think if the wrong warden encountered you with this setup, you may end up in court explaining it. You'll win, but what's it gonna cost?

Re: multiple guns out at once - 03/13/13 08:04 AM

That is correct. I have friends that are Game Wardens and asked that question. If you are in posession of a rifle or pistol during bow season you will be ticketed. (conceled with CHL is probably going to be ok, but still questionable as you will get grilled to ensure you are not carrying it to hunt) I used to think the same thing, meaning hogs come out and I could shoot them with a bow. Someone told me to ask so I did and well I am glad I started the conversation with "Hypothetically..."
