Glen Rose Rut

Glen Rose Rut - 10/28/12 09:37 PM

Went down to the ranch this week for youth weekend! 3rd time bow hunting soo only shot i took was at a doe at 50 yards (way out of range for me) and shot below it! Next morning got up and went back to the same blind to see nothing. Left and walked about 2 miles to our food plot and saw a buck in the back with a 6 point and 4 does. I couldnt spot and stalk them because its all open around the field! The buck was an 8 point with good G2 and G3s. It was chasing does all throughout the field! At one point it was at 200 and right when i was about to take him he starting chasing does againn becoming 100 yards farther away! Took the shot at 300 but missed! Looks like the full rut will start early this year!!! What are yalls opinions?

Uhh, my opinion? Maybe that in the heat of the moment you might occasionally overestimate your limitations with a bow and a rifle?

You tried to hit two different deer this weekend with a bow...one at 50 yards and one at 300 yards...eeks333

So 50yds is way out of your range but you take the shot anyway and than take another one at 300yrds?? wtf Why would you even post this?? You will get hammered for this, you ask for it and deserve it. loco

If he is a young fellow I will give him a break and hope he learned a lesson.

Sorry didnt post this right! I shot at the deer at 300 with a rifle. Im 15 sooo not the best at writing things. I was down at my ranch for youth weekend. My grandpa told me shoot at it at 300! I didnt want to but I didnt want to disapoint him! Already did once that day when he told me to shoot a doe with a yearling! I just said no to that and about the bow im new to that kind of hunting and my heart was racing so much I thought the shot looked about 35 and it was 48. I think ive learned my lesson on this one..

Good luck. Do you have a good range finder, that helped me a ton especially in open fields where you don't have much depth perception.

When I plowed the field it was 300 long and 100 wide. I was on one end and he was on the other so pretty much I did it all in my head. Another thing I did wrong.. I dont know, I made a bunch of mistakes that week that Ive never made before. Oh well, you learn from them!

Good to see a young fellow take responsibility and learn from his mistakes. up That is a rare thing these days.
Continue to practice with the bow and invest in a rage finder. You will get better and it will get easier, but I hope you never loss the buck fever but learn to control it. Once the buck fever is gone it takes away a lot of the excitement from the hunt.

I hunt about 60 miles south of you and do not believe the deer are in rut. May be another week or two. Saw fresh rubs and scraps, but no chasing, However, driving back just north of Hico, I did see a nice buck chasing a doe across a big field.

I wish I had brought back the chip in the video game camera. It shows one of our smaller bucks chasing a doe around our field and then one of our biggest bucks ive seen so far following a heated doe.

I did see a buck chasing a doe on sunday. This is just preliminary chasing, not a full blown rut. You can rattle right now ,and I will be on saturday morning. Younger deer are usually the first to start chasing. Good luck IAMAHUNTER. Hope you get one.

I'll be hunting near the hwy 67 and 199 area Saturday. I've not seen many deer yet...just a few pics each week of a doe and 6 pt in the midnight hours. I hope the activity pick up
