Dryden, Texas - 10/04/11 12:36 AM

Guys need some information on the hunting down south around Dryden. Is it good or bad? How is the area it self? Looking to purchase some land down that way soon, so if you can let me know how the hunting is, I would appreciate the help... Going this weekend to take a look around at a couple of ranches... happy3

Where do we start??? Are you looking in Dryden, around Dryden (North, South, West, East)??? Lots of land for sale there, mostly because it's just such a long drive soooo with the current fuel prices and the fact alot of the guys drive soooo far it just starts to add up $$$$$. Our ranch is for sale, it's 1 mile west of Dryden, reason? Just cost too dang much to feed the deer, drive out there and we don't have the time anymore.

If you go south, you will only find Muleys.

Northwest

Re: Dryden, Texas - 10/04/11 01:11 AM

Our place has Muleys & whitetails. North has both to a certain extent, but mostly whitetail. West has both for a few miles but it turns to Muley country after about 5-6 miles. East of Dryden has pretty good whitetail. We could have some excellent bucks but we just can't get all of the neighbors to stop killing the young bucks.

Meyers Canyon? What ranch and how much acreage? Eight whitetail?

Let me throw this out quickly! If you are looking at one of the 160 ac tracts you will be wasting money. Now if you bought the ranch behind us, you'd be lucky. We are just horn hunters.

The land will look horrible because the drought has been pretty tough out there this year too. The following game are out there: Whitetail, Muleys (not sure about Northwest), javelina, blue quail, doves (morning & eurasian), mountain lion in certain areas, black bears in certain areas (do not kill FEDERAL OFFENSE).

Re: Dryden, Texas - 10/04/11 01:25 AM

The first year they killed some absolute brutes in Paint Mare, but it hadn't been hunted in years. Not sure if it's been shot off but there were some good genetics for sure when it was first developed. 8 Whitetail, I'm just not sure! It had lot's of hunters but the last 2 years they seemed to quit coming out. I know part of that ranch got high fenced out by the neighbor and that hurt their hunting bad. One guy said he was sure somebody had a deer hoof stamp and just walked around stomping it in the dirt because he never saw any deer.

We hunted south of Dryden on 10,000 acres for mule deer. The hunt was about 5 days long. We only saw two mule deer that were big enough to shoot, but they were around 120 inches. I did see one huge white tail that would go 150-160. There was a mix of 50/50 mule deer/white tail. I also saw one javelina. There were tons of blue quail.

We used to have a place between Comstock and Pandale. It was a larger ranch that was divided into 300 acre parcels. We had whitetail and javelinas mainly.

Best time to check out a place out there is during hunting season so you can see how much shooting is going on and where. We had neighbors on one side that would shoot everything that moved and we didn't have any water on our place.

The first two years the hunting was good but once the neighbors moved in it went down hill quickly.

Just try and pick a place where you don't have too much pressure around or else you'll just end up frustrated. We sold our place and I just lease close to home now.

There are some GOOD deer out in that part of the state but ALOT depends on how your neighbors manage or if they manage at all.

The keys out there are gonna be available water and 99% of the time supplementing.

Kinda like: If you feed, they will come.
