Corn is trading for .13cents a pound that means feed store pays 6.50 for 50 pounds that doesn't include cost of transportation, cleaning, and bagging... I would say 10 a 50 is high but fair.. about 20-25 % mark up

Re: Corn, where is the place to get it now? - 03/25/11 05:36 PM

That beats the price of the last that I bought in Vernon at the Tractor Supply. $9.50 for 50#

For you guys carrying alot of corn into spring and summer it will pay you to sprinkle it with 5% Malathion or Sevin dust occasionally to keep it free of weevils. It's to high to let them ruin it.

Re: DEER CORN PRICES 2011 - 04/30/11 06:46 PM

Mumme's is at 8.50/50# for corn and 9.95 for 20%/50# of their protein. The Purina was at 11 and change.

Protein is a commitment I am willing to make and pay for accordingly. However, I'm not going to provide anything but limited rations of zero nutritional value candy (the corn) during the off season for the deer and other critters.

Posted By: murph

Re: DEER CORN PRICES 2011 - 04/30/11 07:11 PM

$8.05 50# bags at Brenham Produce today.

Agreed with Longhorn95, deer will be on protein until September. Looking at it like this, they get way more out of protein for the $ than corn....

Re: DEER CORN PRICES 2011 - 04/30/11 07:20 PM

When corn gets this high you are better off putting your money in protein.

Posted By: stxranchman

Re: DEER CORN PRICES 2011 - 04/30/11 07:29 PM

IMO you are always better putting the same dollar amount in protein that you would have in corn. Corn is a bandaid and it looks good and makes one feel better but underneath there is still a problem.

Re: DEER CORN PRICES 2011 - 05/11/11 07:45 PM

If you buy a bunch of corn and store it for a period of time, odds are you will get weevils. It doesn't matter where the corn is stored. In most cases the eggs are already in the corn. In time, they will hatch. This why I don't buy corn before its time to put out. Of course I probably don't use a fraction of what some of you are using, so your corn may not be sitting around too long. Over here corn is in the $8 to $10 range. If levies along the Miss. River breach, you won't be able to afford corn. There won't be very much of it.

The best price on clean corn and protein that I have found in the West Fort Worth to Cisco area is from Gorman Milling in Gorman, TX.
http://www.redchainfeeds.com/
Corn - $8.90 for 50 lbs
17% Protein - $8.25 for 50 lbs
20% Protein - $8.35 for 50 lbs

Who would ever have thunk we would be paying less for protein than corn...amazing what superior governmental leadership will do

We just used our first load of Gorman Milling (Gorman, TX.) corn & protein yesterday and I was impressed with their 20% protein but the corn was terrible.
Thats the problem when you shop for a better price. I am affraid their corn, which was the cheapest I had found in our area at $8.90 for a 50 lb bag, but it was uncleaned, had lots of junk (small pieces of cob) in it and the corn looked old and realy dirty.
I am going to call them tomorrow but thought I should pass on my experience.
I am really affraid it is going to plug up our spin feeders

But is it worth feeding protein now?

I thought protein was only good in the spring for antler development.

Which do the deer prefer to eat? Protein or corn?

Posted By: ellgrubb

Re: DEER CORN PRICES 2011 - 06/29/11 01:44 PM

I always have some protein going. It helps bucks recover from the rut and are in better shape going into the rut. Also helps the does and fawns. I even mix protein in my spinners during the season with corn. With corn being so ridiculous right now I am actually finding 16- 17% protein cheaper or same as corn.

I still have 3 protein feeders out and i can show you multiple pictures that the deer are going to the protein before they go to the corn on the ground. I purchased my protein in bulk, so i am going to feed it until i run out. Should be able to fill the 3 feeders one more time, which will be this weekend.

Just a word of warning for those of you around DFW - The last couple of times we purchased corn from Russell Feed (Azle and Benbrook locations), the corn @ 10.75/bag was very dirty and a few of the bags had mold.

Russell has been a reliable place in the past, but for the prices they are charging the corn should be cleaner and in better condition.

Re: DEER CORN PRICES 2011 - 07/07/11 11:37 PM

HEB's in Austin still have corn (Mummes) for $8.97 50lb bag. Also Acadmey has the 18% protein pellets at $7.99 for 40 lb. This equate to $9.99/50lbs.

Make sure you tell them (Academy) not to charge sales tax. I received refund after inquiring with corporate headquarters in Katy and referencing Texas Administraive Code regarding sales tax on agricultural products. They were going to re-program system to exclude this product from sales tax on the registers.

I saw the same price, $7.27 at the Austin Walmart for #30 bags. What's going on, first #50 then #40 and now #30 bags of corn. If it keeps up this pace, it is likely that they will be sell us #5 bags for $4 by the time that the season starts.

Get it now! The prices will surely go up. I just moved back down here from Ohio, and the corn crop was looking horrible up that way this year. They got too much rain in the spring and they couldn't get the corn in the ground, then the rain just stopped. Rule of thumb up there is the corn needs to be knee high by the 4th of July and most of it was hardly ankle high. All the corn I saw on the drive back down here looked horrible as well. Just a heads up to you guys.

FYI
A drought year like this year, crops are stressed and aflatoxin is of great concern with producers. Make sure your corn is tested and tagged within acceptable limits. Also bury or burn your old mouldy clean out. It will kill the Quail and Turkey first.

Why not just have Academy or Walmart price match what Dick's is selling it for (if you are in the DFW, Austin, San Anonio or Houston area) and that will end speculation on what price it "may" ring up at. Dicks should still have it on sale for around 6.97 a 40lb bag

Re: DEER CORN PRICES 2011 - 08/11/11 06:32 PM

Ok....I got it all figured out. Take the cost of the corn divide it by the number of pounds and determine the cost per pound. Now ask yourself, is it worth driving all over creation to buy corn 50 cents per bag cheaper when gas is hovering around $3.55/gallon and diesel is $3.75/gallon. How about those economics?

P.S. High corn prices are no good for anyone except for the farmer with a lot in storage or large companies who are sitting on billions of buschels.

Bought corn at Buccee's on Friday in Madisonville. It was $8.75 per 50 lb. bag. Filled feeders on Sunday morning and it was suprisingly clean, quality corn. I was kinda skeptical because the corn didnt say cleaned or re-cleaned on the bag and it didnt have the true mark of good deer corn since (no target printed on the bag.) Nevertheless, the corn was quality with no sticks, cobs, etc.

Re: Best price on deer corn? - 08/28/11 01:17 PM

I bought 45 40lb bags at Dick's in Irving a few weeks ago for $7 a bag. Used some coupons they came in a golf catalog and it worked out to $5.70 per bag. It's all still stacked in my garage until I fill my San Saba feeders this weekend.

I usually buy at Academy, but saw the Dicks deal and took advantage. I can say that Dick's corn (at least in my area) usually comes in brown paper bags and is usually not very clean. The stuff that I just bought came in the plastic bags and was MUCH cleaner than normal.

Here is a chart of the corn futures. Its not looking good. This field prices. The last price is "price per bushel" (754'0 = $7.54/56#), this is before transport, clean and bag. The month is month of delivery.

Bought 8 bags for total of $41.92 after coupon. Came out to $5.24 a bag. Good news is I have a bunch of those coupons good until next august.

San Saba Produce $9.75/50# 0.14 cheaper than Super S in Llano.

Easy to work with. Couldn't get down there during business hours over Labor Day. Took my credit card number and left my corn on the loading dock. Picked it up about 10:30 Sat. night. They were willing to leave an invoice and let me slip a check under the door. Not your everyday transaction.

They knew my wife's grandfather (deceased) so maybe that had something to do with it.

Same thing from Golden Oak this year. I have always had super good luck with thier corn. Always been clean as can be but this year it was full of stems, cobs, and even a few bird feathers. I run big 12 volt motors on my feeders so I dont think it will cause a problem, but when I pay over $10 a bag for corn I expect it to be all corn........not 10% junk!

Corn futures have come way down with the rest of the market and other commodities over the last couple of months. We should see this trickle down to retail prices in the next few weeks(and lower gas prices too). Yea, bout time.

p.s. stop using corn as fuel. moonshine is meant to be a drink.

Welcome to Texas and the Drought..You can purchase Protein for
the same money or less and it does more good...The Doc that I
hunt on his ranch in Fowlerton, has 29 corn feeders, and 26 protein feeders...Walk IN HIS SHOES>..Good Hunting..Dump it out
of a coffee can...Some days I'll have 30 deer in the horse trap
behind my house..come when they hear me crank up the mower..

Texas Trophy Hunters does a "Corn Check" on its Facebook page about every 2-3 weeks. People chime in with the price per bag in their hunting area.

Re: DEER CORN PRICES 2011 - 12/18/11 04:41 AM

corn prices arent going to get any better till maybe next year depending on the summer rain forecast. the drought really hurt in that regard here in texas since the majority of our corn here is used for feed. we have yet to see and feel the affects of this drought
