Have been Hunting in Llano for several years. have a lease about 2 miles south of the High school on HWY. 16. Llano is very consistent, not too many huge deer, but a lot of deer. Trophy perception is in the eye of the hunter. Season should be better this year with the heavy rainfall. Not sure about your lease, but ours has large amount of deer, hogs, turkeys, varmits, and have taken 1 axis buck about 2 seasons ago.

I don't know if it still holds that distinction, but a few years back Llano county was said to have the largest whitetail deer population of any county in Texas.

Well the banner they hang over 71? when you come into town that says 'Deer hunting capital of Texas' is a pretty good indicator when its closer to season. You'll see alot more than most places but just not as big as down south/southwest.

Yep, highest deer population per acre in all of North America. Which might explain why they're smaller than in South Texas.

It's on 29, I have been through a ton of times and that's why I'm going to give it a try this year. 29 runs east/west, 16 runs north/south.

Thanks guys!

I would give it a few more years and then I think Gellespie (sp?) County will steal that title!

Been hunting on the southwest conner near castell /mason line for a couple of years, seen some really nice deer, Seen two killed in the last three years that grossed at 150. I also hunt gillspie on occasion, I think they already stole the title. Llano is just like everwhere else the quality of deer depend on you and your niebhors(sp?)

Talked with a guy in Llano last week and he said there are plenty of deer but also plenty of acorns this year. He thinks this might cut down on the visits to the feeders.

He said last year was disappointing as there were some big bucks seen before the season but then they just disappeared.

Everything is very green and there is plenty of water.

I didn't see alot of deer while in that area but down around Horseshoe Bay where the deer are eating up the shrubbery and everything else, I did see the biggest racks I have ever seen on those deer and I have been visiting that area for about 15 years-the last four straight.

We saw some 10 and 12 point bucks just browsing in the yards. The racks were not wide and the deer were not big but they sure had the points.

I expect when the acorns fall the deer will disappear like they did last year

Gotta find a good acorn tree and be real still!!! I used to listen to the rancher when I was in my twenties and I would always take his advice. I killed two bucks, one in the a.m. and one in the p.m. and they fell within ten yards of each other under a giant acorn tree!!!

our ranch is north of castell 9 miles on the county line i have seen a few deer better than last year. the neghbor who has a high fence has cows on our place and he found a really nice shed on our place a nice thick proboblly and 8 point. there are tons of acorns. and grass. i dont expect them to start comeing to feeders untill mid december. i think it is going to be a good year for quality deer. i got my bow stand in an acorn tree with about 5 trails running within 20 yards of it i cant wate.
