New Lease

New Lease - 07/03/07 04:41 PM

Just Got on a lease in Brady. The problem with the lease is half of the area is high fenced. The previous hunters put their stands too close to the fence and got the other land owners mad. (so they put up a high fence).

My Question is what would be the best way to ensure the deer will cross the land.

When we went to visit we saw to fawns and a few turkey. The area is pretty mix (wooded and developed grass) Just asking for a few suggestions...

cutt holes in the highfence. make game crossings by taking the bucket of a tractor, putting it at the bottom of the fence and lift up with the bucket, creating a man sized hole. if neighbors complain, tell them to piss off, or threaten them with violence. J/k

best thing to do is to heavily feed the non-highfenced side and stay away from there. unfortuatly, game fences put a real damper on animal movements if they run for a good length. on the plus side though, they do act as a funnel, as the deer on our ranch like to use the fencelines ( they are all cleared) for easy travel.

as we did think of it as they limited their options by fencing out deer that could travel to their land..After our land was fenced on 2 sides we placed feeders and protein feeders in the area unable to be seen from the high fence areas and left it alone for a couple months..We did not see any difference in the population that first year and actually benefitted out hunting..We made sure we were around the day the fence was pulled up ...just to make sure no helicopters were "taking game surveys that day"

I GUESS I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION OR THE PROBLEM. MAYBE MORE INFO WOULD HELP. HOW MUCH LAND ARE YOU ON? HOW MANY SIDES ARE HIGH FENCED AND WHICH SIDES? WHAT IS ACROSS THE FENCE ON THE LOW SIDES?
EVEN WITH THAT INFO I'M NOT SURE IF I CAN GIVE SUGGESTIONS... IT DOESN'T REALLY SEEM LIKE A PROBLEM TO ME UNLESS IT'S A REALLY SMALL LEASE.

If you have hogs in the area they will eventually find a way under that fence especially if you feed on your side pretty heavy.

I've hunted near a high fence that rains, and hogs made big enough holes under the fence that deer had little problem crawling under.

You would not believe just how little a hole a deer and even a buck will shimmy under to get to the other side.

I wouldn't have believed unless I'd seen it but they don't need a big hole.

Like I said I've hunted an area that was high fenced on one side on about a little over 200 acres and it didn't seem to effect the hunting, and we saw plenty deer, and good ones also. The fence will act as a funnel to channel the deer through your area.

Now if you have a very small place and are fenced on three sides, you may have been smoked, but if not just feed the heck out of it, and maybe even plant some oats or food plots to make it even more of an attraction.

You are lucky to have found a good lease around Brady. I hunted just outside Eden for 6 years until the landowner sold the place. But before this happened i shot atleast 15 plus nice deer and alot of turkeys.I remember one bow hunt where i witnessed 60+ Rios come in to feed. However, i never once saw hogs or any hog sign its probally just due to over hunting on that ranch in the past. But if you put out a few feeders in prime locations you should have no problem seeing 10+ deer every hunt.

Set your stands up on the fenceline that is now high fenced. Piss them off then just buy some deer. Problen solved.

Yea I wish. How about I high fence the whole thing and put my own deer on the land. Then I can charged you 2000 to 2500 a weekend to hunt..
