Your experience - do deer move when its raining? - 11/28/10 05:23 PM

I took off of work tomorrow and am going hunting (Caldwell County). It is forecasted to rain. Now that I have thought about it, I do not think I have ever hunted when it was raining. I expect a slow or steady rain at times but no major downpours. What has been your experience deer hunting during rain? Just curious as to what I can expect cause I am going regardless. Look forward to your experiences.

Rainy days are very good in my experience. Particularly if it's cloudy the night before. Not downpours, but just steady rains.

Wish I could hunt tomorrow.

If it is a steady rain, they will move.

They will move during rain. Heavy rains they usually stay bedded down, but I remeber someone saying that they killed a big one during a large thunderstorm.
They usually move really good after the rain has stopped.

I've found them to move better on rainy days with no wind. Not down pour though they bed during those.

Misty or drizzle they will move, but give me the thunder and lightning and I want to be in the woods right after it passes, because the deer are really on the move.

Killed my best deer right after a heavy thunderstorm.

cold drizzly days are the best days to hunt, imo

I've seen rainy days when the deer were moving and other similar days when they wouldn't move. One thing for sure is that they will definitely start moving once the rain has stopped.

Heavy rain not much movement but light rain doesn't bother them much. Wind is the big culprit IMO. Never see much movement when the wind goes about 20-25 mph and they get really cautious. Light wind can be a big plus if you use it to your advantage.

If the rain is steady but not a downpour they will move and then after the rain they will move also! Then with it being kinda cool/chilly it just helps out more for your chance to see some deer! I hunt in every situation, unless I'm in a tree/ladder stand without cover!!!

I got one my best deer after three days of non stop rain in Throckmorton Co. several years ago. Hunting an active scrape line is usually pretty good as bucks will rework them after rains.
