East Texas Stud 10 pt - 11/27/10 01:54 AM

I shot this 10pt on oct 29 on our lease in walker county. His girlfriend got hungry and he paid the price. I haven't had him officially scored yet but i think hes going to be the biggest buck killed on our place which was a 13pt. He still had velvet hanging which i thought was cool. See if yall can guess the score and then ill tell you what he went because he fooled me by about 8 inches.

Great buck!!

Without trying put any measurments together on him I say he looks like very high 140's and maybe even low 150's.

Really good deer, one you don't have to think about, hard to judge a picture, I'll guess 179 gross.

Re: East Texas Stud 10 pt - 11/27/10 10:59 PM

Well I was right there with you. I was off by 6-8 inches. I hate trying to score bucks off pics. It can be very deceiving either way. I have been off by as much as 10 points each direction trying to judge from TC pics on my ranch. Once I see them with my eye, Im usually no more than 4 inches off and most of the time within 2 inches. I bet it's nice to walk up on a deer and have it be bigger than what you thought. It usually goes the other direction for most folks. An even bigger congrats. Typical 10 netting over 160 is tremendous.

Thats funny cause our lease is just out of riverside, but we have been managing for 15 years. There has been a buck killed over 150 every year for the last four years

Yeah, those antler restrictions sure are creating a negative impact in East Texas (LOL).

Yeah, those people in Southern Red River Co that hunted all week without seeing a deer where they used to see hundreds are loving it. Obviously they had 140 class 13 pointers there before AR's, so good genetics were present. I am sure AR's created this one.

IF AR's get the credit, why can they not get the blame where they don't work?

maybe they need to learn to lay off the trigger and stop shooting so many deer

I agree. Just because you have 4 tags in your pocket doesnt mean you should kill four deer every year. The deer population in texas much less east texas cant handle that. We maybe kill 12-18 deer off our 2400 acres a year. That is right in line with our harvest recomendations. We have 11 members on our lease. If everyone was just a meat hunter then there would be 44 deer killed just by memebers (not including kids) every year. I wouldnt take long for there to be nothing left on the property at that rate.

And the ar's have nothing to do with our deer. We have been managing our place for 15 years. Long before ar's were even a thought. And we have been killing deer over 130 for 14 years. This deer was a resident of our lease. I have trail cam pics of him last year when he was a mid 130 class eight point. The bent brow gave him away.

Re: East Texas Stud 10 pt - 11/28/10 05:05 PM

One more thing. It took almost nine years of strict management for us to notice a very big change in the qaulity of our bucks so lets not blow the ar horn everytime a big buck gets killed in those counties. Just sayin.

I used to live in Walker County - there are some big boys in the Trinity River bottom. This is one the biggest I have ever seen. Congrats.

Re: East Texas Stud 10 pt - 11/28/10 07:37 PM

you should set your harvest based on individual landholdings, not because the state gives you 4 tags you take 4 animals.

some places need to have alot of deer shot, some need alot of does shot, some its best to take one buck and one doe per hunter and let it be at that.

the state doesen't census every ranch in texas.
