What would you do (part 2)?

What would you do (part 2)? - 11/16/10 06:52 PM

This is a hypothetical...

Suppose you had a neighbor that leased his property to another fellow. Small tract. The hunter is generally pretty nice, but you've caught him in hunting-related lies multiple times. Flat out busted him. These include illegal harvests such as shooting yearling bucks clearly under the ARs, shooting deer and not tagging them, shooting deer and using tags not belonging to him, and/or shooting does when they're not in season. Also does stuff that's not technically illegal, but is pretty shady (inviting tons of people out to hunt this tiny tract).

You're not out at the property very often, so there is clearly a risk that if you press the issue, this guy will destroy all of your stuff.

How would you describe the way you'd handle the situation? I know it's easy to say that you'd throw the book at them, but keep in mind that you have to deal with them every time you're out there.

Anywhere from not really caring, to saying something, to actually taking your evidence to the game warden.

Thoughts?

Call the warden and have him just make some routine stops or checks on you and your neighbors at the same time. His presents will make them change their ways or be caught leaving you in the clear.

Call the warden and call the neighboring landowner and let him know.

I would first talk to the guy. Then depending on his demeanor or attitude take it from there but give the person a chance to resolve the issues. If he continues bust him.

I would call the sherrif first.

Let's just assume (hypothetically, of course) that this fellow has been given numerous opportunities to come clean on numerous occassions and chooses to try to lie his way out very consistently.

But keep this in mind: Is it worth it to make things tense every time you're out there?

he does not have to know u called the warden.

No, but given that I've already conveyed my disgust to him, I'm sure he'd figure it out pretty quickly when the warden just started showing up.

The thing is this:

I like the guy. He's a good guy. I just think he really, really doesn't care about bag limits or game regulations whatsoever. Furthermore, when I catch him doing something illegal, he will just lie to my face. Flagrantly.

At this point I'm pretty sure that he doesn't care that it annoys me, because he just continues to do it despite my very heavy hint dropping.

I'm not sure I should do anything, because it's just not worth it to me to have to watch my back every time I'm out there. But it's aggravating to say the least.

And by "I've", I mean, "the person that might hypothetically face this situation".

Poacher = call GW.
Vandal = call sheriff

IMO no such thing as a good or nice guy that poaches

Well, you like the guy but you do not like what he has been doing and what he is going to continue to do. You have to make up your mind whether you want to keep him as a friend or whether you want him to obey the law. Too me, it is an easy choice...CALL THE WARDEN!!

He must not be a good guy if your are worried about him doing something to you. I would have already called the GW about him and like the other guy on here said check you out as well. But
I don't think he should be able to buy a hunting licenses
anymore for doing $@*! like that.

I don't know that he'd do anything. But you never know how someone is going to react to being "ratted on".

I've definitely tried to cordially talk him out of his actions. If it happens again, I may have no other options.

This is your definition of "a good guy"?

Call the game warden.

Get the GW involved.
X2 on having them check you as well. They will catch him and he will change or leave.

Call the GW. If you have game cam's out hind them and they will catch him if anything happens in retalliation. However the phone call can be anonoimus (sp?).

Drop hints the GW has been asking questions about type things he's been doing...may be a lie but may make him go straight! But have GW come in and check both of you would work also, your clear and he could find dirt on the nice guy!

Re: What would you do (part 2)? - 11/17/10 01:26 PM

I've been dropping hints about the warden all summer, and they weren't lies. Both me and one of the other neighbors ran into him and he's a very stern guy and did ask a ton of questions. He lives less than a mile away, so I'm actually surprised he hasn't swung by yet.

I may give him a call and drop an extra key to my place off the next time I'm in town. You know, so he can hog hunt if he likes...

Re: What would you do (part 2)? - 11/17/10 04:16 PM

The way I see it, you only have 2 options:

1) Accept the fact that he's doing illegal stuff over there, especially since you've made every attempt to discuss his behavior with him. In all honesty, there's not much more that YOU can do yourself.

2) Call the Warden. If he's breaking the law, it needs to be left up to the law to handle the situation.

Unfortunately, when you're hunting "smaller" tracts of land and are surrounded by other smaller places, you're going to run into idiots like this. Trust me, I feel your pain. I'm dealing with similar situations on one of our places. If it ultimately affects your hunting, then you need to take the initiative to put a stop to this quickly.

Re: What would you do (part 2)? - 11/17/10 04:25 PM

I would quit dropping hints and tell him straight up. Good guy or not, the law is the law and if your scared of this person doing something to you, than thats a completly different issue.

Re: What would you do (part 2)? - 11/17/10 04:51 PM

I've told him straight up. And he lied and sent me a picture claiming proof it was 13 inches. And I turned it around on him and mathmatically demonstrated iron-clad proof that it was probably closer to 8 inches based on what was in the picture.

No response after that. I'm wearing thin on this issue and may just invite the game warden to frequent my land if he needs to shoot some hogs. We've also had a problem out there with an older fellow shooting from the roads, so it's probably about time people in the area started feeling a little pressure to stop all their crapola.

Poaching is poaching. Call and let your local warden know whats up.

Sorry cameron, I read what i wrote and it came across different than the way i meant it. what i meant was if your scared of him doing something to you or your things than the gamewarden deffently needs to be involved.
