Hunting Centerville Texas

Hunting Centerville Texas - 10/07/10 07:06 PM

I have always hunted in west Texas for 20 years and I found a lease in Centerville. I have not found signs that there are alot of deer there. I was wondering does anyone else hunt in this area and what kind of success to you have?

Re: Hunting Centerville Texas - 10/07/10 07:10 PM

there seem to be deer in the area..I've noticed that the folks I know who hunt the area seem to have better luck w/ a mixture of timber and pasture land on the places they hunt.

you are talkin' Big Centerville, right?

there are deer, especially in Leon County. The area gets hunted pretty hard because of its proximity to Dallas and Houston

I used to hunt in buffalo and saw tons of does and almost no bucks. Lots of hogs as well. Depending on where you are, there are actually some very nice deer in that area, but you have to find a bigger tract because it's a very heavily hunted area.

Another thing I'd mention is that the only success we ever had in harvesting a buck came by walking through the timber in the middle of the day. We jumped up a decent 10-pter that was bedded down in some brush beneath a big pine. He was about 100 yards from our camp.

I wasn't there, but a buddy of mine shot a coyote that came out of the woods growling, and right after he did, an 8-pt came out and gored the dead yote. Right up until my buddy shot it as well.

Weird place, but there are definitely deer there.

buddy of mine shot a 154 un-official score 10 point somewhere near centerville. There are deer but hogs seem to be a problem out there.

Yes I have noticed the hogs. I have never had hogs before and am waiting to see what kind of problems I have with that. On the other hand that is year round hunting that I have also never had. Will be going back down next weekend to look at camera pics and see whats up. Unfortunatly I am not on a large parsel of land, only 180 acres. We'll see, thanks for your .02.

unlike the hill country which i love dearly, you actually have to work for the deer in east Texas......I hunt across the hwy near buffalo........my best advice: Plant a food plot (clover) !
Your gonna be real disappointed if u throw a feeder up and wait........Centerville is awesome, lots of deer, and some nice deer.......good luck

We've hunted in Leona about 3 years ago right before antler restrictions. There were always good numbers of deer but hunting pressure was insanely high. In the 3 or 4 years we hunted we probably saw two or three that would meet today's restrictions. It would be interesting to go back and see what that would be now. Opening day out there sounded like the fourth of July. We were only on 200 acres just south of Leona but good graciois it was bad! Always a ton of hogs.

If you do take up this place I recommend steak night in Leona. Only open Friday and Saturday but ohhh so good. Pretty small place right at the only yellow blinking light. Ive heard they've had to expand to take on the "crowds".

Thanks for all your posts. My hunting partner and I have been doing research on food plots and are going to get started next weekend. Will keep you guys posted. I believe that we will take up residence here because of the price of our lease. I got broke from all the high price leases. This land looks like it has alot of promise and we are going to work our tales off to make this work. texas

The best area that I found was the picnic area next to the lake. When I went, there was a strip of tall grass around the lake and a sandy beach after that. The wind was blowing from the picnic area to and across the lake so I just hid behind the grass and laid down on the sand till the deer showed up. I even took a little nap. About 30 minutes before light, three does showed up and were eating the acorns from the big trees in the picnic area. One worked it's way toward me and I stuck her with an arrow at 20 yards. It was my first bow kill.

That was back in 2000 so things may have changed since then.

X2. If you put up a feeder, all you'll get is a crop corn growing under it unless hogs hit it. If you hunt that area, you're really going to have to hunt; not just sit in a box and watch a feeder. I hunted a place near Fairfield for 13 years. You have to learn their natural movement patterns, their bedding areas, their food sources (which change as the different types of oaks drop their acorns), and their reaction to hunting pressure. It's a fun area to hunt but don't waste your money on feeders or permanent stands. It takes the deer about 2 days to pattern you so you have to be 1 step ahead of them.

Re: Hunting Centerville Texas - 10/11/10 12:30 PM

I'm going to disagree with PrimitiveHunter on this one.

The does hit our feeders like clockwork there. It's a no-doe county, so they're not scared or spooky. We never had bucks hitting the feeders except for youngsters, but keeping all of those does around serves the same purpose it does anywhere else.

The bucks still like poon-tang, even in Centerville.

Re: Hunting Centerville Texas - 10/11/10 02:28 PM

Yea I agree with Cameron on this one. We havent had any rain in 2mths and I believe it slowed the acorn crop down. There are some acorns dropping, but they are destroying the feeders. Leon cnty produces some great deer and our lease should be taking some 140's soon. Just being patient and keeping the does in check!
cheers

ya'll shoot most of ya'lls bucks under the feeders or out cruising in the fields (think I remember a field in past pics)?

I wouldn't call Centerville "East Texas". It's more Post Oak Belt. Very pretty country.

I would say both rifleman! We are covered in pin oaks and live oaks...Its been to dry to put the food plot in. I did let the pigs have it this weekend though. up

Re: Hunting Centerville Texas - 10/12/10 11:46 AM

I will be going for a short hunt this weekend and it will give me a chance to look at the cameras we have set out. I do beleive that the deer are a little wiser here from the pressure. But bottom line they are still WTD and have needs they have to fulfill. I will agree with Postoak that this is very pretty country. One box blind that we set up over-looks 2 feeders and the view is fantastic. You almost don't care if you see an animal because of the landscape.

I passed that area quite often living in Dallas and going to school at A&M there were always a ton of deer feeding on the side of HWY 45 in Leon County. They are there you just have to find them

Re: Hunting Centerville Texas - 10/28/10 01:00 AM

Ah... Well ok. They do serve Saturday night so there is hope! You can love your kid and eat your steak too!

Re: Hunting Centerville Texas - 10/28/10 03:21 PM

I hunted in leona just south of centerville and saw a good bit of deer but nothing like west texas.. Had a few decent buck on cam and only 1 pic of a monster maybe 140+ but never saw him again and he came out at 1:00 pm.. I ended up shooting an 8 pt about 17" spread but nothing spectacular.. But we gave it up the next year but i wish we never did.. It definately worth getting just becasue it pretty close to the metro and if u hunt it hard it will payoff...

Oh yeah and we had tons of hogs too..

Re: Hunting Centerville Texas - 10/28/10 08:01 PM

I hunt there.....3 years ago was awesome, no decent bucks since. I attribute it to the hunting pressure around our place. Beautiful country and tons of hogs.

And Leona steak is awesome. Take the left overs for steak and eggs in the morn.

Re: Hunting Centerville Texas - 10/31/10 03:08 AM

I dont know what the talk of no bucks is. I have been hunting my ranch for over 17 years and seen good deer. We have 2500 acres in between Centerville and Jewett, and have good bucks but you have to work to find them. We have alot of problems with people shooting "if it's brown it's down" AR restriction or not. I will be here for the next week and a half. If you ever want to meet up shoot me a PM. I have seen 4 bucks this last 3 days. The rut is on the deer are moving and hunting couldn't be better.
