Say there is a light breeze.

200 yards? 400 yards? 50 yards?

I know they can smell our feeding stations from probably farther than that because we have corn and roasted soybean in the feeders along with a deer block and then an alfalfa bale. Smells like peanutbutter! grin food

I'm asking because I'm trying to decide on stand placement. I have a pasture that's about 700 yards long that is sort of a long, slight hill. Not going to do a feeder, but if I put a blind on one end of the pasture and then threw corn a couple hundred yards away, would deer passing through the pasture smell it if they were on the opposite end (400-500 yards from corn)?

Not really important, I'm just kind of thinking out loud.

cornpile doesn't work near as good as a corn trail for 500yds...at that far it would be hard to tell if they were 13" wide unless you've got some good glass, or release your pitbull/chihuahua cross to go hold it down for you so you can put a tape measure to it.

Feed indian corn, the deer can smell it 10x further and will stay on the cornpile longer.

I was planning on calling out to the deer to inquire as to their respective legalities.

You're saying that's a no-go?

calling out to the deer will work 20x better than ARs, wave at them if you have to in order to get their attention.

try and see.

Sounds like I'm good to go.

Maybe I'll put up a sign that reads, "Free Corn!" and point it in my direction.

I'm way ahead of the deer in cunningness.

I think they could probably hear the feeder go off further then they smell it.

I hunted a place in Brazos county once that had quite a few deer on it. I did not have a feeder so I would just pour corn out in a long trail across a pasture. I have seen deer as far away as 300 yards pick up the smell and come straight to the corn when they were down wind.

Don't know about how good they can smell..but I once corn fed a road accross a flowing creek bed that was around 8" deep and corn went into the water. I watched an axis doe eat corn to the water and then walk into it continueing to eat corn in the water. She had her water up to her eyes and ears and came up eating corn! So do not know about that for smell but I know she could see it for sure.

Every deer can smell anything up to exactly 273 yards away.

Re: From how far away can deer smell corn? - 08/20/10 02:02 AM

So if I fart, I need to verify a solid 274 yards plus account for wind driftage?

Oh boy...this isn't going to be as easy as I'd hoped...

If you like the Indian corn you should try to find some with apple scent added to it. Not only do they stay longer but they come from farther away.

I was also asking this question to myself How far away can deer smell corn? So, I put out corn in my feeders and the distance from the woods was 300 yards. I was amazed next morning when I woke up and saw deer in my garden.
