Tires for deer lease truck

Tires for deer lease truck - 01/25/14 10:12 PM

I'm new to hunting in Texas and have no experience driving around a bunch of mesquite. Have seen the thorns and can imagine what they do to a tire. I've tried to search the forum but can't seem to find the right word combination to get what I need.

Now, the question I have is, what type of tire would be good for driving a truck around on a lease filled with mesquite. The road are pretty good, i.e. well established, marked well, etc. But I'm concerned about driving my truck around the property and then 300 miles home.

I am looking for a reasonable priced lease truck but would still have the question about the tires.

Would appreciate any help/guidance that y'all can offer.

I have Hankook Dynapro ATM on my 01 Dodge 4x4 with a 3 inch lift kit. I cant tell you how many throne bushes and Catcus i have ran over this year. Never had a flat tire. One day got back to camp and had throne's sticking in the side of the tires. I have put 8k miles on mine driving from the lease to home since October. Still have well over 80 % tread on them still..

Put the same ones on my wife's Durango 4x4.

Chris,
Thanks for the input.

Guess I should have added, I'm running Michelin LTX A/T 2 LT265/70R17's right now.

I'm probably over thinking this but need some pointers.

I run those same tires, haven't had any problems with mesquites.

Whatever tire you choose get E-rated tires.

I'm running Dynapro MT's on my old Dodge 4X4. Toughest tire I've ever seen but they are loud on the road and the ride is stiff but if you're just going to use it for lease trips you'll be fine. I've never had a flat on one and they wear like iron.

Brand doesn't matter so much. Pick any flavor you like.

Construction of the tire makes all the difference. You will need a minimum of D load range and preferably E load range (commonly called "10-ply"). You'll need to air them up hard. I run mine at minimum of 70 PSI. This also makes the sidewalls stand up straight instead of bulging.

I run BFG A/T. I've found that the sidewalls tends to be stronger. However, they only go for about 40,000 miles and they're not cheap.

With that said, I ran our deer lease in S. Tx for 5 years with only one puncture. A thorn got the inside sidewall and created a slow/gradual leak. It was so small and gradual that it took the guys at Discount Tire 3 times to finally locate it. They replaced the tire for free.

I wouldn't put Slime in a road vehicle. I don't know how it holds up to highway speeds or affects the tire balance. My Ranger is a different story. Point it where I want to go and give it the gas.

I would like to find a good set of tires for my truck that do well in the mud but don't make driving on the pavement dangerous or too noisy. I'm not sure that exists.

Michelin xps tractions have a steel case that works. Expensive but there are no mesquite thorns that can punch through them.

Re: Tires for deer lease truck - 01/27/14 12:26 AM

Thanks for the ideas/feedback so far. My current tires are "E" rated.

Already have a plug kit and a compressor/inflator. Towing a boat trailer I try to be prepared.

Was also going to look into having slime - if not in the tire, at least in the truck (yes, I know the tire guys don't like it but just in case I need it to get to them).

So far, it sounds like unless I just find a great deal on a UTV/ATV or small vehicle, I should be OK to use my daily driver if I have too.

Toyo at II. There all terrain and 10ply. Ran em on all my diesels when we had cows and going through pastures with big mesquite thorns never had a flat. If price hasnt gone crazy the last set I bought was 285/70/16 and I want to say I paid right at $1000 for a set of 4. I put almost 50k miles before getting new ones. That is if you keep em rotated and use em tell the treads gone lol

We run BFG AT tires on our camp trucks but in Junction we have more issues with rocks and cactus. Rocks will punch a hole in the sidewall on any 2 ply tire and the BFG's are three ply. Been running the same set since 2007 and never had a flat or puncture.

buy you a spare set of tires and have them foamed... never have to worry about a flat again... but you will need to take on and off when you get to and leave the ranch

Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's. Good on road and great offroad

Re: Tires for deer lease truck - 02/06/14 03:05 PM

By the E rated tires you like from Discount Tire and get their road hazard warranty. Any tire will wear off road and any tire will get a puncture sooner or later.

I know a guy in Houston that will do it. May end up joining with his business to get tractor tires done.

Re: Tires for deer lease truck - 02/07/14 03:12 AM

Dynapro AT is the best ranch tire we have found. Tough, but ride rough and wear well on gravel roads. We ran Yokohama Geolander AT's forever but they are not as tough. Have tried BFG AT's, no names, Michelin all steels and quite a few others and all but the all steels only lasted about 20,000 miles on dirt roads. The all steels are awesome but not twice as awesome and they cost exactly twice as much. I have Goodyear MT/R's on another truck and they have been stellar so far but the jury is still out they have about 5000 miles on them and no stucks or flats yet.

I just got some new Kelly Safari TSR's in December. Great in mud at the lease on my 2wd. Great hwy ride too. Super aggressive look and after 2 sets of Terra Grapplers I made the right call.

Thanks for all the advice. The tires I have a E load rated from Discount with the road hazard. Guess I'll just stick with them and see how it goes.

Had never heard of putting foam in a tire. Will need to look that one up.

If you want the ultimate protection and do not mind the whine on the hiway go with some Goodyear MTRs with kevlar. Discount put a set on my truck by mistake. I got to test them for a month including a trip to the lease. They are one of the toughest tires I have run and use to run Buckshot Mudders with nylon belts. Load range Es are fine on 3/4 tons + but you may not like them on lighter trucks. Also the weight may hurt your MPGs. Surprising the MTRs were E but I only noticed a minimal change in MPG. I had Discount take the MTRs off and put on a set of Duratracs which are probably the most aggressive AT out there. I never had a problem with them even though some say the sidewalls are thin. Tread life seemed good but I sold truck halfway through tires. I have BFG ATs now and they are tough but no good in mud. When these wear out it will be another set of Duratracs. Also, there is huge difference between cactus thorns (prickly pears) and mesquite. I run over cactus all the time and never worry but avoid mesquite when I see it.

had two sets of hankook muds. never one flat tire in 4 years combined of driving over mesquite, rocks, cactus, and anything else our place in south texas can offer. i broke down this time around and went with the nitto trail grapplers to fit in with the cool kids.. no problems yet, they're great tires but for the $$... go hankook! tried and true

Also pay attention to where your driving and what your running over. Been riding around our thorn infested place since '11 on a set of stock "p" rated tires on my z-71 and have yet to have a flat period.

Re: Tires for deer lease truck - 02/27/14 12:44 AM

Your best bet is to just buy an "E" rated tire or the higest rated Ply tire you can find!
Don't just go with any A/T tire. Make sure its properly made for you trucks weight too. But a 10 ply tire or load E is great start at least for 1/2 ton trucks, thats what I run!

BFG AT-never have had a flat. Not good for MPG but friends and I consider them As bullet proof as you can get.

Re: Tires for deer lease truck - 04/27/14 04:22 PM

I used to be a BFG guy all the way. Raced Baja trucks and buggies for years. They are great, but others have caught up.
Goodyear MTR's are great offroad, but wear fast on pavement.
I now have Toyo Open Country AT's on my Lifted Excursion and they are a year old and still look new. That's after a trip to OR and a trip to SD. Soon as the crappy Pro-Comps on the wifes truck wear out, it will get Toyo's as well.
