equiping my jeep as a hunting rig, what should i do? - 01/03/12 04:21 PM

awhile back i posted about trading my jeep for an f150, well after ya'lls input i am keeping the jeep. witht that being said, is there anything special i should get. this might sounds like a dumb question, but with very very little hunting experience i figure ya'll might know a few tricks. i do plan on getting a hitch basket, even thought of getting a front mount hitch, and maybe a winch, other than that i figure just some basic safety/survial gear. any thoughts are appreciated thank you.

I put a front receiver on my jeep front bumper and bought this fold down carrier from Cabelas to haul deer in if needed. It is removable and I am going to wire in a electric outlet for a receiver mount winch that I can put in if needed and add a back receiver hitch. I also had a 20 lb Nitrogen bottle made with 25' hoses, gauges and regulator to fill up low/flat tires that I mount in the back bed area. Carry a plug kit and tire sealant along just in case.

Air Compressor
Jack
Spare Tire
Heavy Ply tires
I put a 3/4 " plywood roof on mine that can easily be taken off. You can lay stuff on the roof or even climb on top to spot

Sorry i don't really have any close up pictures, but this jeep has some things you might consider. A rack in the front and a wench, can put two seats on the rack for quail hunting. A basket on the back for the all important ice chest and misc things. A feeder mounted on the back as well. It has gun racks between the driver and passenger seats. Don't know it you will want a rack on the top like this one has, but works great for coyote hunting and spotting dear along with carrying passengers to their stands. The engine is stock, and the tires are filled to prevent flats. Hope this gives you a few ideas. Oh yeah lights mounted to the front rack to help seeing, cause the jeep lights won't work so well with the rack on front

I am in the process of decking out my 74' CJ5 that was given to me. I welded up a receiver tube on the front bumper and there's a good size carrying rack on the back. I sprayed the entire jeep in bedliner to protect it from the south tx brush. I am also going to mount some LED lights around the shell and back to shed some light on areas if need be.

LOL, thanks! These jeeps get the job done for sure, you can carry 4 people with ease and bring in 3-4 deer back into camp with you as well on the front rack.

Yea, think I'll be building a rack for my CJ this off season. That's a lot cheaper than buying a new Polaris Ranger I've been wanting. A jeep is just a better vehicle to have than a UTV. IMO

Here's mine, I elected to put my All-Seasons Hercules feeder on the front so my tailgate still opens. I have a game carrier that I put on the rear that allows the tailgate to still be opened. On the interior, I have a Big Sky Gun Rack mounted overhead in the front. In the rear, I have Rugged Gear two gun rack mounted on the center hump.

This year I will be adding driving lights mounted on some windshield hinge brackets because the feeder partially obscures the headlights.

The gun rack is a Big Sky, got it from Cabelas. I upholstered a board, foam padding underneath. The board is attached to the center rollbar and the windshield frame in the front. The gun rack is bolted to the board.

Only drawback is I unload any passengers in the rear before I remove the gun in the top rack, it is unloaded of course.

There are not too many options for a jeep. If you need more pics let me know.

STex, who makes the road feeder you have on your jeep and where did you get it ? I like it and the only place I can find a low profile like that is from Lamco.

It's an All-Seasons, Hercules model, 100#, I highly recommend it. Try contacting txtrophy85 on here for pricing.

I think they even make one now that's a lower profile than that one.

Gotta love the Jeeps at Schmidt Ranch Some of the best rigs for hunting in the brush country. Big foot was my favorite.

IMHO, the only thing you need a front and rear receiver hitch and some sort of rack/basket for hauling stuff. You can carry 2 adults and all your gear easily in a 2door.

Lockers
Come-along if you don't have a winch
High-lift jack
bungee cords (to secure all the stuff rattling around in the back)

I can't seem to insert a photo, but here is a link: WILLYS
