Polaris Breaks AGAIN

Polaris Breaks AGAIN - 10/25/10 12:09 AM

Went ridding to day with some friends and to try my Polaris after getting it out of the shop for the 8th time. It's a 09 800 sportsman with 84hrs. Today while ridding the belt and clutch exploded at 70mph. It made for a exciting ride at the time this happen trying to get it stopped. In the past 2 years it has had over $3k in repairs done under the extended warranty. The extended warranty has saved me several times with this POS. It has more shop hours than ridding hours, believe me my friends can tell you like they do me every time they pull me back to the trailer. Don't buy one and if you have one sell it !!

I had an 05 Polaris 800. The fist year they made the 800 I believe. The right side shroud by my leg melted from the heat of the exhaust pipe. I was just wheelin' slowly through the woods. The dealer fixed this under warranty and it never happend again. The polaris would bake by A$$ everytime I rode it. It may sound stupid to talk mileage too but it sucked. I took my polaris and my dads can am 800 to the black hills of South Dakota. I would blow through a tank of gas and my dad's would still have half a tank! I loved the power but I decided to sell it a year ago. Best thing I did since I bought it. I think I'll go Honda, Arctic Cat, or Can Am next. Good luck with your rig!

Thanks I took it to the shop today. I will be waiting to see what they come up with now. I agree with you on the gas it uses a lot !! The heat is bad to the fan runs all the time. It will be for sale soon !!

Sorry to hear you have had such back luck with your Polaris machines. I have been riding Polaris since 1993 and NEVER had one in the shop for repair, only general maintenance. I currently have a 500 Sportsman and a 800 Sportsman and both run great with 0 problems of any kind.

We go to Colorado hunting about every other year, so mine get some pretty rugged treatment as well.

Sounds about right. My bil has taken the polaris from the ranch he works at to the shop multiple time. The welds on the rollcage broke in over 5 spots and the actual tubing of the rollcage itself broke in 2 places. This was from normal riding around the ranch too, it has never went over. Makes you feel alot safer riding in one if the cage can't even hold up to normal riding

I have been ridding since I was 3 years old. So I'm confident in my ridding ability. I have owned over 10 different ATV's mostly Honda's. This 800 is a very fast and the ride is amazing. I don't use it to hunt, it is a trail, work , play machine that gets it's fair share of ride time when I can. It's 3 years old with a little over 80 hours so you do the math, it does not get out much !! 70 mph all day long !! I have been 78 several times and thats not why it's in the shop. My problems have been 3 batteries in 3 years, new voltage reg. installed, new fan and fan motor, 2 new transmission covers, several gas leaks, new exhaust covers, now new belt and clutch with another gas leak. It last about 4 hours per ride until it breaks. It just get old being towed back by a 2wd Honda rancher.

I have had 6 polaris machines since 94 and never one problem. I work them fairly hard, but I dont do 70 in my truck much less Ranger or 4 wheeler's ( not that they could do it anyway). Often when folks gripe about a machine there is human error involved. Just saying.

Re: Polaris Breaks AGAIN - 10/26/10 02:57 PM

I agree about the human error part of your post. If they were put together correctly there would be less of these issues. All of my issues with this machine are handled under the warranty as a NON wearable part or issue. If I were out there beating this thing to death I really couldn't gripe about it breaking. But when the pin that holds the drive shaft break inside the yoke and rubs a hole in the gearbox and causes $1800 in repairs twice how is that an error on my part? If you look at my post most all the issues are parts that don't move NON wearable parts. I'm not gripping about tires, brakes, lights etc. The only error here is the quality in building these machine and the parts that are used.

Re: Polaris Breaks AGAIN - 10/26/10 05:36 PM

I have a 2008 Polaris Sportman X2 700 EFI. After 3 years, 3000 miles and 300 hours I just replaced the battery and voltage regulator. The only other problem I had was with the drive belt after towing s heavy load at low speed in High gear instead of Low like the book said, sure 'nough, the book was right.

I know there can be drive belt issues if the belt gets wet also.

Mine will go 65 mph so I have no doubt the 800 will go over 70. Sorry for all your problems. I have really enjoyed my X2. I wonder if the Texas Lemon Law applies to ATV's?

Re: Polaris Breaks AGAIN - 10/26/10 05:46 PM

I'm not sure on the lemon law. I will be looking into that next I do no that when you call their customer care number there is no complaint department. All complaints get's thrown back on the dealer which makes no sense. Thanks for your reply and good luck with yours.
