Best 4wheeler - 06/17/10 09:04 PM

Whats the best 4wheeler on the market today? Figured we could get some good convo going...I pick the Suzuki 750 king quad for reliability, price and features.

Re: Best 4wheeler - 06/17/10 10:13 PM

Ive owned 3 newer quads.
2007 King quad 700fi
2008 Brute Force 750efi
2008 Grizzly 700fi with power steering

Number one and Number 3 were stolen Jan of 09. But out of the three the grizzly was my personal fav. The grizzlys clutch housing is built the best due to the fact that the intake and outake are towards the top of the bike. There for you can go through deep water and not worry about slipping the belt. The king quad was my second fav. It was awesome until I submerged it and had to rebuild the motor. It was never the same. I thought the brute force was a piece of junk. They are way over rated. Everytime I rode it either I would snap a cv axle or smoke the belt and send it off into limp mode.

Hondas are great my dad has an 03 foreman 450s and it has been through hell and back. Hondas will do what they need to do just dont have the top end power needed to break things.

I have been riding Polaris ATV's since 1993 and currently have a Sportsman 500 and a Sportsman 800.

I have ridden all of the major brands and for me Polaris is the only way to go. I have never had a problem of any type with any of my Polaris atv's. Honda would be my second choice.

I had a Honda Rancher 350 for 17 years, now I have a 07 Honda Rancher 420. I ride it everyday here on the farm.

I haven't ridden anything but a Honda so I can't help on other brands.

Re: Best 4wheeler - 06/18/10 02:22 PM

I really hate these "best" threads, but I always respond since I have my opinions and experiences too. Anyway, I have a 2004 Yamaha Big Bear with 8400 miles on it, and all I have ever done to it is change the fluids and replace brake pads. I even put 5800 miles on the original tires. I ride it every day but don't abuse it, and in my opinion, that is a major factor in "problems" in 4 wheelers as a whole.

I firmly believe that the "best" 4 wheelers are the "basic" models without all the bells and whistles. If I were buying another 4 wheeler today, it would be a toss up between a Honda Rancher with manual transmission or another Yamaha Big Bear.

I don't believe there is a single "brand" of 4 wheeler that is any better or worse than any other, but I do believe that certain "models" in all brands are more prone to problems than others.

Re: Best 4wheeler - 06/18/10 04:06 PM

I have a 2008 Polaris Sportsman 700EFI X2. It is a two seater - front to back. Or I can fold down the back seat and have a cargo box that holds up to 400 pounds. It will tow up to 1200 pounds.

It is great for hauling the corn and stuff around when I am by myself. Then when my grandson comes out we can ride together and both still be comfortable.

I've got almost 3000 miles on it now with no issues other than doing the regular maintenance which I can do by myself.

I used to have a Honda Rancher, but the ride on the Polaris with IFS/IRS is so much better.

Re: Best 4wheeler - 06/19/10 02:11 PM

Retrieverman... U r right, the best one is the basic model. Just like vehicles, the basic models have fewer things that can go wrong. I have two 2004 Honda Foreman 450's. One is foot shift and the other is electric. The foot shift has over 13000 miles and was heavily abused, toeing and haing way more then it ever should and has been known to sink in a few mud holes. Keep them maintained and they will last forever.

Re: Best 4wheeler - 06/21/10 12:38 AM

I bought a 2007 Honda Foreman 500 last year with only 17 hours on it. I absolutely love it. I use it on my wetlands...the majority of the work I have used it for is broadcasting seed, and using it to spray undesirable plants.

So far so good.

I have a 2002 Kawasaki Prairie 650. Best ATV I've owned. I have not heard many good stories about the new Kawasaki Brute Force lines, espeicaly the 750.

If I was buying a new one, I would love to buy a new Prairie 650, but seeing how it all that brute force crap, I would have to go with Honda/Polaris.

Re: Best 4wheeler - 06/21/10 10:31 PM

I have two Yamaha's now and have only ever owned Yamaha's. One is a 2003 Big Bear and the other is a 2007 Grizzly. They have both been great bikes with very little maintenance required. Only thing to ever go wrong on the Grizzly was a broken axle and it was replaced under warranty for free.

I have an early 90s model Yamaha MOTO4 350 and a '96 Polaris Sportsman 500. Got no complaints with either but IMO, the MOTO4 is one tough beast.

Re: Best 4wheeler - 06/23/10 07:48 PM

great, another ford vs chevy thread....

and my vote is Honda, but have friends that swear by Polaris. I wish everyone would understand that they are two completely different rides. Go ride a Honda 100 miles, then a Polaris for the same distance. IMO each has its own good qualities, but in the end i'll stay on a Honda. I feel more in control on a honda any day than the bulkiness of a polaris (which polaris was supposed to work on in their latest model of sportsman)

I just got a Polaris Sportsman XP 850 back in November and I love it!!! Tons of Power!!! Lots of ground clearance. I can get through mud with trail tires that my buddies with Hondas can't. I'm a big guy but when i get on with my 320 lb body weight it barely even squats!!!

Re: Best 4wheeler - 07/14/10 03:49 AM

I own a Kawasaki and love it. However, I believe most of the name brands are very good machines. The one thing I have never understood is why everyone now buys the extremely large engines. The smaller, lighter machines are easier to drive, steer, get unstuck, etc. It was not that long ago that a 250cc machine was the top - now I see 700cc machines and just not sure why a 4wheeler needs that kind of HP.

That's no lie. my 96 fourtrax has had a total of 4 oil changes ever and runs like a top every weekend for hours in the heat. I spray mesquite trees with it so it has plenty of hours for sure!

Honda. Just bought one so the jury is still out.

I've used a grizzly in the past and it worked fine. I would think a lot depends on how you treat it and maintain it. we've been pretty rough on the grizzly and it runs like a top.

Re: Best 4wheeler - 09/14/10 05:23 AM

I've had a couple of different models

1985 Suzuki LT250ES
2003 Kawasaki Bayou 250
2002 Suzuki Ozark 250

I can't justify spending several thousand bucks on something that I'm going to ride until it falls apart. I bought all 3 used.

The Ozark is by far my favorite overall. It just feels bigger and sits up a little higher than the Bayou.

The Bayou has a nice, cushy ride and will pull just about anything I can hook to it.

I sold the 1985 Suzuki after the steering locked up and I couldn't fix it. It was a workhorse, just a tough old four wheeler.

The Bayou has had a couple of issues, but I finally broke down and spent the money to have the carb rebuilt and a new battery and tubed the tires. I haven't done anything to it except change the oil and had the shop do the valve adjustment thing on it a couple years ago.

The Ozark hasn't really given me any problems, it's a little cold natured, but not too terrible.

I like them both.

My buddy has an 06 or 07 Honda 400 Rancher 4x4. I've rode it on occasion, it's a pretty nice ride, I wouldn't have bought it, mine are paid for and he nicknamed his 'Bill'.

Re: Best 4wheeler - 10/15/10 06:52 PM

i would say a yamaha wolverine 99-05. they don't make em like that anymore. best ground clearance of anything stock. good power, and it is built on a sport frame rather than a rough utility frame. truly the only good sport 4x4 ever made. would be great in the mountains or on the ranch. wouldn't you know i have one for sale/trade right now. check my post here on the forum.

Re: Best 4wheeler - 10/24/10 03:55 AM

I am involved with a group/club that mud rides, and we put ATV's through things that you would be amazed they would go through, with mud and deep water.

This is my thoughts-
Yes, for years Honda was the ATV to have, BUT in the last 5-10 years they have not stepped up to the plate in leading the market. They still have horrible ground clearance, the least power per CC, and the least suspension travel.
Right now the bikes and mfg.s that are stepping up maing some tought smoothe riding working quads are Polaris and Arctic Cat and even Can Am. Keep in mind all of these are made in the USA or Canada, not made over sea's. Also for importing reasons's the weight limit is around 600 lbs., for the mfg.s here they are not restricted by this, therefore their ATV's are heavier. to me this means there is more metal and iron and support in the ATV in the frame and suspension.
Honda is still riding on it's past rep as a dependable leader, but I promise you, ride their "best" quad, the Rincon, then ride a 1000 or 700 Arctic Cat, 850 polaris, or 800 Can am, and you will without a doubt think otherwise. I have a Arctic Cat, which I have put through it, on mud rides, and then used it deer hunting for the last 6 years, and it has not missed a beat. It's towing an rack payload in signifigantly larger than the Jap mfg.s and rides like a cadillac!
I hate seeing all these people who are so ignorant and loyal to Honda's just because "that is what they always had and their daddy had". Yes, they are good quads, but as far as the best, there are much better brands out there.
