Poof pods?

I see these pods occasionally, but the other day a pasted under a tree that had them everywhere under it.
I have no idea what they are, I just now if you kick them they go POOF and powder goes everywhere.
Anyone know what they are?

Top side, they appear to have been an enclosed pod that was split open.




Bottom side, this one is about as big as a softball, most are baseball size.

fungus.. every time you make it go poof you're growing more of them.

Devil's snuff.

Yup...Devil's snuff. It is a fungus. We used to search them out as a kid because it made my grandmother sneeze..and we thought that was funny. We were turds as children!!

I know he looks ugly but give him a chance! He's a fun guy! (get it, fun guy/fungi?) I really need to put down the beer and back awaaaaay from the keyboard.....
