Best Typical Whitetail of 2015 Award - 01/18/15 07:39 PM

Thought you all might enjoy these photos...Frac-Daddy and Pump-Jack are 3 year old womb twin brothers. Last night at the Deer Breeders Banquet, Pump-Jack won the coveted Typical Golden Buck Award for 2015. He's the Wide 8x7 typical. Although Frac-Daddy out-scores him and has 6 tines 14"+, Pump-Jack's look is where our industry is headed right now.
Thanks...Lance

Caveman,
Impressive looking deer. But how do the Deer Breeders Association score these deer so that they are considered "typical." Are they just looking at the mainframe and ignoring all the splits and flyers? just curious.

When the typicals are scored it's just on the gross main frame (no abnormal points are credited) and they can only have a limited number of abnormal points to qualify for the typical division for TDA. (I think it's no more than 10%). I'm not real sure on this one. It's Boone and Crockett gross typical score. I do know that Frac-Daddy had a typical main frame of over 250"+ but his overall gross was 320"+ so he did not qualify in the TDA typical division.

So Lance....these are the cut offs or drops...right? 3 year olds should

My thought too. I know breeders do their best to get deer as big as possible, as quick as possible. A "time is money" situation.
3 years old or 6 years old, I am impressed.

Very impressive. I'm glad to hear this is the direction the industry is heading. For a while there, it was getting way to non-typical and freakish IMO. up

Number 2 looks better than number 1 to me.

A big clean 6 x 6 is the ultimate dream deer in my mind.

Glad big typicals are a focus instead of the cactus headed freaks.

I've got a few photos I'll post of a low fence main frame 7X7. I had seen the deer 2 times in velvet then he vanished for a month or so the showed back up with a broken left beam. Photos are from a very cold rainy day in SW Texas. Baker

Do you tranq and cut/mark the antlers during velvet or is that 100% natural? Monster bucks for sure.
And just an fyi, B&C has asked that their scoring not be used on high fence deer. Don't know if that's a request or a warning from them.

Re: Best Typical Whitetail of 2015 Award - 01/20/15 11:38 PM

Thanks again everyone for the comments...the only time that we put them down is to draw semen and that's done after they loose their velvet. At that time we get their inside spread and main beam length, then cut the antlers off to keep them from getting injured or injuring doe. We then have them scored unofficially by 2 different master Boone & Crockett scorers (who will remain unknown). We don't do anything else to them as stress is the primary concern. They get the same feed as we feed in the pasture and nothing else other than some electrolytes in their water at times in the summer. It's simply genetics. I know 7 Boone and Crockett scorers and they all help us out when asked. We just got lucky with these guys I guess, again, our goal is to raise beautiful, big framed 80-100% South Texas line bucks that are just pretty and not necessarily ones that score the most.

You are way behind the times. 200" deer are virtually culls in the breeding industry these days.

Re: Best Typical Whitetail of 2015 Award - 01/31/15 03:37 PM

The Sire, Express, is roughly 80% South Texas as is the Refuge line of Slingblade give or take, so roughly 80-85% South Texas. We're putting back on our Pure South Texas Berry lines and looking for incredible things. Both bucks are very dark grey with dark antlers which I really like...Thanks...lc
