Rusk County 10pt - 11/21/14 09:48 PM

Well add another good deer for East Tx. I shot the buck we named "high brow" this morning. We have been cursed with the small brow gene for several years, until this guy came along. This buck haunted my dreams for the last couple of weeks, so it felt great to seal the deal this morning. A little backstory: I live in OKC right now, while my wife is finishing law school, so I only get a couple of weeks a season to hunt our East Tx lease. I came in and hunted the weekend of November 11. It was pretty slow until right at the end of my hunt. The rut kicked in on our place and I saw several bucks chasing my last 2 days of the trip. I first saw this 10pt on my last morning hunting. I'm hunting a pipeline and he came out a long way from me and I could immediately tell he was a good deer. I watched him through my binos as he zig zagged in and out of the woods down the pipeline until he got within range. Right as I went to grab my gun he went into the woods, and I didn't see him the rest of the hunt. I was really discouraged, thinking I should have shot sooner, but I never really had a clean shot. It was a long 5hr trip back to OKC thinking about this deer, and I was already planning my next day off to get back down here. That ended up being today. I planned to hunt all day today, but it ended up being the shortest hunt of my life. I got in the stand a little late around 6:15, due to the pouring rain and by first light around 6:30 I had does out in the pipeline running around. About 15 minutes later I turned to my left and saw my buck walking down the lease road at 50 yards! I wheeled around and put the crosshairs on his shoulder as he stopped, just before stepping in the woods. I squeezed and he jumped about 5ft in the air and crashed into the woods. I waited an hour to make sure I didn't push him and got down to go look for him. He had only made it 15yds into the woods to his final resting place. It was an awesome experience and I'm happy the Lord blessed me with this deer.
