persimmon seed...fact or myth????? - 10/05/14 06:12 PM

My wife was telling me she always heard if you open a persimmon seed and it looks like a spoon that means its going to be a bad winter. I guess the spoon Is supposed to be a shovel to shovel snow. She said if it has a fork in it then its going to be a mild winter. Dont know what the fork is supposed to stand for. I opened one today and sure enough it looks like a spoon. Sure its just a myth but was still pretty neat....

cheers What would it mean if your persimmons did not make due to the lack of rain? bang I would not mind a cold winter for once. If it was wet it would be even better. We need a lot of moisture and deep moisture.

Never heard that one.
It has been a while since we had a good cold winter, we'll see if the shovel is for shoveling something else. grin

Joshua brought a pocketful home after bow hunting this evening. All six were spoons. Around here it is the gospel. Going to go ahead and keep a extra round bale per cow just in case.

Never heard this before and we have wild persimmon trees full of fruit right now. I didn't know you could eat them either. Once the rains stop, I'm gong to go cut some in half and see what I find!!!

I've heard that before. What I heard (or at least what I remember) was the "spoon" meant you'd be eating a lot of soup this winter (harsh and cold with little to eat). A "fork" meant a milder winter with hardier table-fare, more meat, and a "knife" meant cold and windy as all hell and you'll be ready to cut your own throat by the time it's over.
