Fortress Schoenenbourg

Fortress Schoenenbourg - 09/19/14 12:28 AM

Finally getting around to putting some photos up from a trip back in June through Europe where we followed a lot of World War history. Will try to post some new every day or so.

This is Fortress Schoenenbourg, part of the maginot line located in the Alsace. Very impressive bit of engineering. It did work and make the Germans go through Belgium. Never did surrender until ordered by politicians. However it was outclassed by modern warfare of WW2. Most of these pics are about 100 feet underground.

Wow, TurkeyHunter. Those are just awesome. I remeber going through the USS Alabama and couldn't help thinking about the men who served and the things they went through. Looking at these photos I have the same feeling. Just awe and amazement.

That is some awesome photos. And thanks for sharing. There is some great history there.
I remember in the late 1970's we would go off of the base that we lived on in Germany (it was originally a German base)and play in the old WWII bunkers that we would find in the woods. No one knew they were there. They were usually at a good vantage points to see far and the old rock walls were still holding up so you could tell what they were. I would sit back and think of all of the events that that could have taken place there. Those kind of places are what I love to visit.
