My metric build.

My metric build. - 06/09/14 04:18 AM

This has been one hell of a project guys but it's also something that I've been dreaming about since I was a teenager and now its becoming a reality! I purchased this 1999 Yamaha roadstar XV1600 last July with only 13k on the motor not knowing what I was going to do with it, I had the idea in my head but was having a hard time trying to figure where to start. Finally one day I just went at it and started taking off parts that I didn't like I originally was going to build a bobber but later realized I'm a bit to big for the that small platform. So I had to go with a build that will fit me and I think its working out just fine smile.

Night I towed it home, it didn't run but after cleaning the jets and the carb she fired right up!

Stripped down for paint but later found out through my friend Ethan who did the awesome paint job it needed a lot more attention underneath..

The drama under the paint the tank was stretched with a sloppy weld job and also found a lot of bondo covering some dents!

Once that was repaired properly it was time for primer and paint, I chose house of kolors candy purple with house of kolors orion silver and a black bar separating the colors with a light mist of metal flakes. Old TCU colors wink The paint looks blue under certain lights but the true colors come out when the lights hit it right!

Final product and all the credit goes to Ethan for this killer paint job up

Exhaust, intake, carb, tires, front end, rear suspension all removed then off to Yamaha for a recall on the tranny.

Getting her ready for the tricky air ride.

Next was getting the rims, rotor mounts, forks and covers and triple tree polished. Ethan again saved my a*& on this one.

after

Re: My metric build. - 06/09/14 04:19 AM

In order for the air ride to slam down to the frame without damaging the rear fender or tire I had to do some chopping on the inner fender bracket. The suggested size from the factory is a 160 but I threw a 180 it doesn't look like much room but its enough to clear both sides with no rubbing.

After the chop I cleaned it up real good and rounded out the sharp edges and finished it off with some black primer.

Next was the hardest choice ever and I'm glad I went with them the handlebars and I picked the crème de la crème Carlini flying apes 16 inches tall 1.5" thick with the high roller riser but these jokers measure out to 20 inches shocked. I had to wait an agonizing 6wks for these jokers but it was def work the wait! Now I gotta splice and run the wires internally bang.

Risers vs the old

Re: My metric build. - 06/09/14 04:20 AM

Working on the front forks now I'm dropping it 2" with progressive springs and gold valve emulators but waiting on the damn seals to come in!

I'm almost there between work, kids, house projects, and guns I'm damn near at the end of this beast tired. I will keep yah updated as I go if you like up.

Looking good! The ape hangers don't look so tall with you on the bike. I've built a lot of bikes, although I don't ride, it was fun to see what my two hands could create.

Swing by the house when it is finished and lets go for a country ride.

Re: My metric build. - 06/09/14 02:13 PM

Thanks for the positive feedback guys I really appreciate it up. Intake, exhaust, wiring, and suspension tuning is next but I'm getting there quick..... The biggest challenge will be the cables and wires I'm gonna try to run everything inside the bars.

Re: My metric build. - 06/13/14 04:15 PM

Got the front end together late last night after work

Extending every wire will be an all day event

But ran into an issue with the controls I don't have enough room on the bars, so I might end up relocating some of the controls under the tank. tired

Beautiful bike. Not a fan of the hangers but over all the bike looks great.

Re: My metric build. - 06/13/14 07:15 PM

Thanks

Bigdaddy I didn't have much of a choice on the bars. The lower bars had me looking like Sasquatch on a moped but these apes are actually really comfortable.

Re: My metric build. - 06/13/14 07:39 PM

Not my style of bike, but most certainly my style of thoroughness. Keep us updated, this is a very informative build. Are you on Chop Cult?
Posted By: Txkiller

Re: My metric build. - 06/13/14 08:17 PM

I'm not on the chop cult but I do lurk around in there, some pretty wicked builds and chops over there.

The name is appropriate for that picture. IMO he must have the brain of an ape to get on the highway with other vehicles around you with those handle bars to have to react quickly to someone not seeing you which happens all the time riding a bike.

Few things came up and got in the way, the tank had to be re-painted the lines just didn't flow with the fenders at all. New roof and AC coil set me back on spending money bang . I'll get back on it soon, going back and forth now on which exhaust to get true duals or slash cut curb feelers.

Here's the tank it's just waiting to be wet sanded now.

Re: My metric build. - 08/21/14 05:19 PM

Only true Duals would do that beast justice.

Love the colors.

Re: My metric build. - 08/22/14 07:06 PM

Uhhhh.....nidea You could've painted a big ole coiled rattler on the tank. That brown & tan pattern would've looked good on that blue..... peep

(devil made me do it.....) loser8

Re: My metric build. - 09/26/14 11:47 PM

Tank is done as of last week the entire thing looks wet!

Cables, true duals with the fishtails, intake and passing lights are next. Unfortunately it can't be my main priority right "now" but slowly but surely I'm getting there. Looks like I'm gonna miss the annual car/bike show at work next month frown
