agree he is over. He is a bigger bodied deer and his ears are covered by antler, so he is at least 13 but more likely bordering on 14+ some.

I LOVE AR's (not really) ya got 2 pages of internet experts here, some say legal and some say not, and WE are supposed to be able to judge them on the spot!
I'd roll the dice and shoot!

shoot now measure later... might just be my new motto...

I would say over, and I hunt in an AR county. But where are you hunting on 1/15 that it's still legal to shoot him?

Re: I’m thinking under 13” - 01/15/14 10:40 PM

Those that would take the shot and if the buck is NOT 13" or wider, what would you do with the deer? Would you tag it, fill out the Harvest Log on the back of your license and take the chance of getting it home with an illegal buck instead of calling a GW? It would be a whole lot worst for you if you don't call and then get stopped, then call and have them come to you with you admitting you made a mistake.

To close for my liking but seems that most of you think that it is over 13” he lived another year and hopefully will be a no doubter next year. I figured more would think that it was right at or below 13” it’s a nice rack very even on both sides, just spread only hurting that buck

That's the good thing about ars is that it allows deer to get some age on them. This buck is over by an inch or two at a minimum. Maybe you will get him next year.

I think the law is in place to protect a buck like this. Next year when you see him and he's 5.5 you won't have to post the picture and ask. You'll be posting a picture of him with you holding a bigger rack.

As stated above, he should go 15" any way.He has a big body and will surprise you with his rack size. Take him, I would and wouldn't think twice.

you are allot braver than I am, I would let that one pass for sure. If that was indeed 14 2/8 then yes I would agree that mine was at least 15. I figured I would wait anouther year let him get more mature. congrats on your buck though.

Well I took mine because he was 7 1/2 years old and ready to be taken out of the heard. He was a management deer. Scored 126. I have never had the chance to take such an old deer. He is by far my best trophy.

yes he looks old, I was thinking it was 6.5 when I first saw it. going downhill on its antlers. great harvest up

Re: I’m thinking under 13” - 01/16/14 02:27 PM

Maybe I'm just used to South Texas bucks, but that deer looks a max of 4.5 years old to me. Very pencil-necked, his brisket doesn't meet his neck, and his face doesn't look old at all. Additionally, that is a 10-point with really weak G4s. Give him 1-2 more years to breed and grow to his max potential. You aren't going to shoot really nice bucks, if you shoot them the year they become decent. Just my 2 cents.

I’m not saying the deer I posted was that old. The deer that was posted above he said was 7.5 I was thinking 6.5 when I saw it. And the deer I posted is not 4.5 he is 2.5

1. I understand that you weren't talking about your deer being old. I wasn't talking about the other deer, as I referenced the weak G4s, which that deer doesn't have.
2. I guess I was confused on why you started this thread based upon your comments. I thought you were debating shooting the deer you posted.

Deer I posted walks regardless if 13 or not. Just looking through pictures though and wondered what everyone thought about the 13” rule is why I posted. It looked close to me so wanted to see what others thought.

Personally, I wouldn't take it. He is probably over, but I prefer to err on the side of caution.

Re: I’m thinking under 13” - 01/17/14 03:31 PM

Shoot now and measure later.

That deer is a trophy to me and for someone to say no it's not a trophy until it's a half inch wider pi$$es me off.

ARs are stupid, “Many laws as certainly make bad men, as bad men make many laws.”

Re: I’m thinking under 13” - 01/17/14 04:40 PM

I have to laugh at these discussions.....in my opinion it is a shame we are even having such a discussion.
The deer looks mature and I think is over the stupid AR rule.

I do agree with the gentleman who mentions that if a panel of THF experts are is disagreement as the width then how does a hunter makes an accurate judgment on the spot in potential low light conditions?

And for all those fellow who say they would let him pass, I sure would like to see the trophy's on their wall because this looks like a good shooter buck to me and could easily be one of the best bucks on this piece of property.

yea he was pretty but let him walk. He will be bigger next year

Re: I’m thinking under 13” - 01/19/14 12:57 AM

He may be right on the mark, but I'm letting him walk. I made my mind up that if I can't actually see daylight between the tip of the ear and the main beam on each side, then he walks. I don't need a deer that bad.

Re: I’m thinking under 13” - 01/26/14 11:36 AM

Well, using the TPWD's diagrams as a guide I would say not legal:

Re: I’m thinking under 13” - 01/26/14 12:25 PM

Any game wardens out there that want to chime in and help? These are decisions we are faced with.

I think it is a good deer but too close for me to call. I personally won't pull the trigger if it won't beat what is already on the wall. Because of that I don't shoot many bucks. I do believe the law leaves ALOT of grey area for us hunters to sift thru.

Still like to hear a game wardens clarification.
