How do you hunt for Sandhill Cranes? Pass shoot or decoys?

Where do you usually set up for cranes? Cotton fields? Peanut fields?

Do you call them?

We generally setup for them in wheat fields and milo fields here in Kansas. We call them and it seems to help some. The decoys really do all the work for you.

Wheat fields? Winter wheat that's green still? Or summer wheat that has been combined?

I want to shoot some on my place.

Good pics, down south they can clean out a Sendero full of corn in a hurry, I've been wanting to give it a shot on hunting them.

Agree, but I think he was asking about the brand/manufacturer perhaps?

? Really? You actually eat them? They don't look like they have much meat on them? For some reason I thought they were off limits as far as hunting.

Actually that's pretty reasonable for two reasons,
A. Little market competition
B. actual r&d'd full body crane decoys, with realistic poses/paint

Sure one could buy a dozen silosocks for 125, but it would take multiple dozens. Or in most areas, six of these would work equally as well.

They are really good eating. Much better than ducks or geese in my opinion. They have more meat on them than you would think as they weigh about 8-110 lbs. or more. Much more meat than a duck.

They have a large "no kill" zone in Texas. You really have to know where you're at. Was deer hunting weekend before last and flock after flock of them flew over at tree-top height all weekend. Had a 12-guage in the truck, but we were in their safety area.

Re: Sandhill Crane Hunting - 12/10/13 05:00 PM

You aint killin near enough of'em Krane Killer. I hate those terradactyl looking things. They scare the heck outta the deer when they decend on sendero's in south tx.
Get busy and kill more of'em.
