Backyard Rattler...almost got me

This little SOB was curled up by a lantana bush on the east side of the house this morning. He was sunning himself about a foot away from a fire ant bed that I was treating with poison. I was standing less than a foot from him, wearing only flip flops. I set the poison bag down within inches of him when I noticed him. He only has two rattles and a button, so I never heard him. About 16" long.

I hate them suckers. Glad he didn't get you.

Not seeing any pic LP...just glad you did not step on that little sucker or he would have looked a ketchup packet in a Mickey D's parking lot after it got runned over.

bout did the same thing with a cotton mouth the other night... that time of year when they are starting to look around for a good spot to sleep

Man Mike, if you're gonna wear flip flops out & about you really need to wear protection.....you can also pull the socks all the way up to your knees, like snake boots.

The baby rattler is resting comfortably in a 5 gallon bucket in the garage. Haven't decided his fate yet. One thing is sure, he won't be residing in the yard any longer.

Just make sure you tell the old lady about the snake in the bucket. When I hunted Victoria, a buddy of mine caught a 3 ft rattler and put it in a bucket with a lid on it, put it on the porch of the guest house, then forgot about it. I showed up to clean up and mow the yard and needed a bucket to put trash in before I mowed. It was sunny so had my shades on, picked up the bucket and shook it, hmn wonder what's in here? So, took the lid off....looked inside but couldn't see with my shades on....so took my shades off and stuck my face almost in the bucket to see what was in there when Mr Rattlesnake struck and almost got me in the face. Sure got my attention, & yes he got a piece of my mind too.

Yeah, the wife wants to see the snake so I'm saving it for her. She can play with the dang thing when she gets home from work.

Close call - I wear flip flops all the time myself so gotta be careful.

I'm grateful we don't have them around my house. We have a fair share of copperheads. This year, however, has been a very low year compared to those in the past.
