Re: scat ID help - 05/31/13 07:51 PM

Goat got the poo scared out of it. smile

Could be mountain lion. Hope you get whatever it is before it kills all the goats. A big cat killed all my neighbor's goats, then moved on. Tracking dogs didn't find the cat.

p.s. i posted some pig pooh a year or so ago & the moderator pm'd me not to do that anymore. trying to run a classy forum i guess. smile

Yes, its poo.

IVe lost two goats in two nights and had three others attacked that hopefully will make it.

Any help with ID is greatly appreciated.

Looks like pig to me. Not enough hair to be dog or cat. I know a pig will eat a dead critter, but I don't know if it would kill one.

It's not berries or mustang grapes. Don't try to eat it.

If I were to guess I would also say pig. I have never heard of any attacking livestock

A can or lighter in the pic would make this easier to identify the scat.

I think either dogs or coyotes killed the goats. Probably dogs since there were 2 killed. Hogs then ate on them.

Re: scat ID help - 06/01/13 02:03 AM

The pasture is closed in with field wire. No way a hog would get in even using the small scoot areas under the fence I found. Have never had any hogs in that field.

Just found out thata few days ago a neighbor about a 1/4 miles up the street had his full grown great pyrenees killed in his field.

The first one killed was a 3 week old kid goat. The second one killed was her momma with a vvery engorged milk bag.

The three injured goats all had wounds to a back leg.

That would be my guess.

I tend to agree with this ^^^^^^. I would put a trail camera up on the area to see what shows up. Hogs can wiggle underneath a netwire fence.

What kind of injuries did the dog have? I dont know of any wild animal that would try to kill a healthy Pyrenees. Sounds like you have people killing animals in your area or a pack of wild [censored] dogs.

They said its throat was crushed and torn out. Also heard this evening that there is a big pitbull running with another dog, they were seen in the same field the great pyr was in.

Hopefully I have caught something by morning and questions will be answered.

Bites on back legs sound like dogs. Neighbor a few years ago had 17 Boer Goats killed in one night. I caught one of the pit bulls in a snare the next night.

From what I've seen and what you've said it's got to be dogs.

Re: scat ID help - 06/01/13 09:23 PM

Nathan years ago my buddie had some dogs get into his chicken pen and killed everyone of them. We took the birds out to the pasture and put them in a pile, two days later we had shot 5 dogs. No more dog problem!

Agree with this one. Had some sort of animals just attack the goats and most weren't even eaten. Wild animals usually at least attempt to eat them or take them off, unless they get interrupted.

Feral dogs on the other hand go into pack and hunt mode, don't eat most anything just rip and shred the back ends to part and eventually kill the animals. Leaving the bodies strewn everywhere with very little sign of predation, just dead and wounded animals.

Especially sounds like the pit bull that packed up. Don't know of any other animal that would try to take on a pyrenees and win, unless it was a pack of feral of dogs.

Didnt have any luck with my traps last night. I was up and checking on my goats all throughout the night though and shining my light in the pasture so that might have kept hwtaever it was away. Will keep this updated if I catch anything and after the predator calling next week.
