Unfortunately It's not from my lease. A freind of mine works with a guy who leases this place. The deer is somewhere in Archer County. I was wondering if it could have been from a snake bite. I've never seen anything like it before.

Re: What's Wrong With This Deer? - 10/20/11 04:40 PM

It's interesting that he is still in velvet while the other buck is in hard antler. I wonder if that is related to the injury/illness/infection/whatever.

Re: What's Wrong With This Deer? - 10/20/11 04:43 PM

iv seen alot of older heavier antlered deer hold there velvet alot longer than normal...dnt know if it has anything to do with it but just my thought

Where there any fires there. Could it be a burn?

It looks to me like its road rash and the deer was fortunate not to be ran over completely.

That's a nice buck for Archer County!

That pic is from mid-September, and it looks like that buck is molting. Not sure that's mange on him. Definitely looks like a cut on his leg. Sure would like to see him walk. Look how funny he's standing. Left rear leg forward and left front leg backwards. I'm betting this buck was walking with a limp when that pic was taking. If they get him on cam again he may be back to looking almost normal. IF it's mange, and not convinced it is, he will most likely be showing up now with thinning hair and more bald spots. Be nice if he walked in front of the cam again. They shouldn't have any problem deciding once they see him through a scope. I'd guess he's either gotten considerably better, or considerably worse. Either way, somebody in Archer County will drop that sucker and eat him this year, if they get the chance.

Great flying coon shot! :-D

Here are a few more pics of him. Whatever it is he looks to be fine.

Here's a pic of his buddy

That pic on 10/02 looks like he's done molting. That place on his side doesn't really look better or worse to me. Looks healthy as a horse, except for that place on his hip. Still doesn't look like mange to me.

Buddy has a nice rack, and he's a young'un. I don't think that buck's over 2 1/2. He'd be danged interesting to see next year.

Where the heck is this in Archer County?

The place is just outside of Wichita Falls. I think it's around 2200 acres and only has 1 hunter. It's a freind of a freinds place. I was just trying to figure out if the deer had been bit by a snake or not.

Re: What's Wrong With This Deer? - 10/22/11 02:38 PM

By now the skin would hav most lilkely been splitting and ripping from excess puss and swelling if it was a snake...and now that i look at it..snake bite trama usually follows the vains when it gets into the blood stream..not just one huge spot...im no expert tho by no means....i would try puttin some type of bump sock out with mange and lice powder in it on you feeder...works good on cows..have never tried it on deer but these deer look hungry and im sure they wouldnt mind it....did yall get a good rain latly after a huge dry spell like most of texas? this is when lice and mange breakouts happen most

Man, you have some skinny whitetails in Texas! Great Bucks though, I'm guessing old road rash. I've seen it before here in Iowa.

Lot of skinny deer this year. Most of the state is in the worst drought we have seen in decades. Even during a year where we get good rains, they don't get close to the body size of the deer in your neck of the woods.

Just a thought, but maybe it is a wound from when he was younger. My son killed a young doe(his first deer) years ago with a similar but not as large spot on a hindquarter. It was a spot where a large cat had ripped the skin off. You could see where the claws had punctured the meat at the top of the wound. There was no hide and it had scabbed over, just like on the buck in your picture. Nice buck by the way!

If you zoom it in there is a crease below the patch, I bet he was hit by a car and that is a scrape area above a deep cut.
