Unusual things you have found while hunting

I saw this on another forum and wanted to see what my THF boys have found while hunting. I found an arrowhead many years ago around Encinal while bow hunting. I was sitting behind some cactus and happened to look over and saw a pointy thing sticking out of the ground. Reached over and picked it up and it was an arrowhead. What about you?

My brother and I were walking once while hunting and saw a metal pipe-looking object sticking barely out of the ground. He reached over and messed with it and I pushed him back about the time the cyanide went off. It was to kill coyotes by shooting the cyanide into their mouths when activated. It had to have been there since Moby Dick was a minnow, at least 10 years and probably longer.

I found an old dutch oven lid last year @ del rio.It is in great shape also.Some one must of left in a hurry.

I found my one and only first arrow head last year! I've been looking for years and that's the first I've ever found.

In the past I found an old cast iron toy motor cycle and a bottle with a round bottom ( I mean round as in you can't set it down like a coke bottle, you have to lay it down).

I found MY camo wallet once that I had lost on a morning hunt, miracle!

An arrow that I had lost from the year before on a hog. The broadhead was still good but the fletching and shaft and nock was all chewed up.

I found a keep out sign posted on my camera post Sunday??Weird.

I know a guy that found a suburban... abandoned...
I found an old cabin, dilapidated, with a cool old cast iron stove in it... using that stove still today...

Now that's a cool find. All I found was mesquitoes here lately.

I found a civil war grave once, a rock with a perfect hole in it, and an old abandoned whiskey steel.

I'll post up photos later of the civil war grave to see if anyone that does that kind of thing can track some family members so they will know. It was out in between Putnam and Moran.

I once got in my stand in the morning and shined my flashlight around the stand to look for the bird that lives in there, and I noticed a piece of paper stuck to the wall. I got closer and it read...."Thanks boys for the hunt last weekend. I appreciate the buck I got, boy was it nice!" I was furious when I read that because our land is right next to a road and we have been worried about people seeing our stands and knowing we're out of towners and hunting when we aren't there. For the next few days to a week we called around our uncles and people we knew in the area to see if one of them would fess up to the note and none of them knew anything about it. We were pissed and didn't know what to do.....Come to find out a week later at our uncle's deer camp, it was his buddy who lives down the road and drove by and left the note in our stand!!! HAHA. We had to laugh when we found this out because the guy is a funny bastard and he got us!!!

That's a good one I'll have to remember that if I ever get the chance to pull it on someone! lol

The first year I was on a new lease I kept seeing a shiny object hanging from a tree. After the hunt I went and looked and there was a trotline hanging between two trees. I guess the people had been "turkey lining" before we got the lease.

hahaha... i will have to pull that one on a buddy this weekend!!! im glad i will be there before he gets there!

I set a live animal trap out one night while i was at the lease to see if i could catch one of the 500 coons i have stealing my corn. the next morning i walked up to the trap and had 3 bobwhite quail in the trap!

Opening weekend of my first evening hunt in Telegraph Texas I was up in my blind and was looking at my feeder when I saw something moving behind it. It was orange/red. I thought maybe one of the guys in camp was trying to pull some sort of prank on the camp newbie. I finally decided to get out of my stand, grabbed my shotgun (was waiting for Turkeys) and went to check out what was behind my feeder. I went around the back of the pin oaks and a family of Hispanics was standing back there . They did not speak any English. I finally got them to move off. To this day I still think about what could have happenned had something wandered into the feeder and I pulled the trigger.

Holy cow! That is a scary thought. Illegal or not accidentally shooting someone is horrible. Hopefully they didn't run into one of them shoot first check second hunters.

The range finder I thought I had lost.... Only after buying another one.

I was looking for a bow set up when I came across an old one room shed but looked like an old home because I could see and old water pump and it had windows like a home would have and a roof like a house would have it was strange looking but me and my friend wanted a better look so we got close and had to really push through some thick vines and bushes, as we got close I look up and see a black shadow leave the house and I yell oh crap and my friend looks to see it come across the top of this house and I yell again oh crap and we began to run through that thick brush getting cut up by thorns trying to get out and as we get far enough we see it�s a big ol vulture and its just sitting on the roof staring at us and then flys away we then work up the courage to go back into the hose and its filled with toilet lids and teeth or some type of animal it was the weirdest thing I had ever seen

So many unusual things, where should I start?

Meth lab, 2 fields of weed, both in NE Texas. South Texas 20 miles from the border: lots of arrowheads, many mexican pesos while looking for arrowheads, 5 bales of weed (40 pounds each) wrapped in burlap(hidden before BP caught them), duffel bag of cocaine(50 pounds), lots of stolen and wrecked out vehicles used for hauling illegals, and old lever action rifle, wood rotted off, grown into a mesquite tree, and what was left of two dead illegals after the hogs and coyotes finished their work. A metal arrowhead(1800's) and some really old .45 ammo from around the ruins of an old stagecoach station.

Was hunting with a buddy one time and he came across and OLD rusted up shotgun leaned against a tree, looked like it had been there for years.

During opening weekend of muzzle loader we went to fill a feeder when i noticed a window open on a blind that wasnt open the day before...

opened the blind and found- camo face mask, scent waffers, grunt calls & a empty .243 casing...poacher got in the stand and I think he heard us comming up the road and lit out.

The stand is over 1.5miles from the nearest access point.

Found my hunting watch that I lost the season prior..While walking to my stand on an evening hunt last season I looked down and noticed it laying on the ground covered in mud.. cleaned it off and it was still keeping the exact time. Had been laying there an entire year..

Found the ranchers daughter dooing the deed with her (GIRLFRIEND}. Hated to break that up!

Was Pheasant hunting in Herford and found a 7 1/2 inch Ruger Black hawk 44 that had been Magnaported, the grip's were long gone and it was covered in rust internally and externally, it had been there for many years.

Here are a few cool things I have found while hunting. A large mollusk fossil in Roosevelt, TX. Several old glass snuff containers in Jasper, TX. A small brass bell hanging in a tree at an old hippie hideaway in Colorado. I am always afraid that I'm going to find a meth lab in my camper in Newton, TX.

I also found a stash of REALLY dirty magazines from the 60's when I was a kid in an old abandoned barn. Much worse than what you can buy today if you can beieve that.

I knew a gunsmith that found a Remington 11 leaning against a fence post while hunting.He had to replace the stock/forearm and reblue after getting the rust off.I bought it from him back in 73 and i still use it.

Was walking through the woods at large deer lease in east texas with a buddy of mine, and cam acroos a make shift "camp" there was no roof just a bed a sink with no running water and what gave us the creeps is the place was littered with childrens clothing and dolls?????? Needless to say we packed up our stuff and head out of there!!!!

not near as interesting as you guys, just a bunch of old coke bottles and beer cans that have the old timey logos.

My FIL found an old windchester rifle leaned against a tree up on a hill on our place. The wood was gone and it was cocked and rusted firm. Story has it that a payroll wagon traveling from Fort Phantom to Fort Concho was high jacked on our place. All the soldiers were killed. The old timers say that they buried the silver up there and that there's a wagon axle that marks the spot. We know where there's an axle but haven't found the silver. Kinda makes you wonder what happened to the owner of that rifle...

I've found several old dummy bombs on top of another little hill. There was a WWII training base here and they used to practice dropping bombs on that hill. I've found tons of fossils and arrow heads. Found an old spur once down on a place I managed north of Dryden, that was pretty cool.

I knew a guy that found a buffalo vertebrae with a flint arrowhead still lodged in it! Coolest find ever! He has it on his desk in a little glass case.

On a place we had leased for cattle east of Stephenville my grandad found a guy hanging in a tree by an old barn. The cops all showed up and they were doing there investigation. Pop walked up to one of them and said, "When ya'll are done with that monkey you make sure I get my rope back..."

Found a three room bunker, about 6 feet underground with steps going down in to it. sleeping bags and magazines inside. I check and see if anything has moved every time I go. I would put a trail camera up, but worried that it will get ripped off.

Found a TON of cool rocks, another ton of cool fossils, some 50bmg bullets, arrowheads, cool animal skulls, some indian markers and even some old Spanish trail markers... I found a tennis shoe in Junction along with some candy wrappers-probably from a NEW trail marker, the Mexican kind!

i've found some old beer cans, some really old barb wire (1880's ish), but nothing really of any mention.

my buddy found a dead mexican (he'd been gone a LONG time, probably of dehydration) i don't find them but others in my group routinely find arrowheads and spear points.

I spend a lot of time in the woods, but i've yet to find anything of notible mention that wasn't trash or discarded junk

one cool thing about a place i hunted when i was a kid, the owner of the land we hunted showed us a graveyard on his property, that had some really old grave sites on it, most of them were from the mid 1800's. just outside huntsville, the town was called cincinnati and yellow fever had wiped out the whole town. many of its residents were buried in the grave yard we visited.

A buddy of mine and I were bow hunting for Javelina in Arizona on the back side of a lake on state land back in the early eighties. We followed a game trail up a rock ledge and by chance discovered a small entry hole under a rock out cropping. The entry was not nuch larger than 3-4 feet. Apparently the pigs had used this as a bedding area. Turned on the flash light and found broken bits and pieces of indian potery. I could hardly stand the smell of the pig droppings. Definately a cool discovery.

I've found some arrows made from stone, a 1918 cartridge and a 12 pack of S L 43 looks like .50 cal ammunition from 1943 WWII

I've found an old farmstead with a few houses, a barn, a well, and a cellar. i also found a big 10 foot ladder

When I was in Junior High, we were at a friends ranch in the Delaware Mts. in deep West Texas, and at the edge of a canyon, we found a hole that was 10'-15' deep that had a ladder down in it. There was also an opening at the bottom. We don't know what it could have been used for, no other sign, like bottles, shell casings, ect. The rancher didn't even know it was there, and he had been on the place since '75. May have been Pancho Villa's hide outs or something, who know's

Hey Texttu we hunt in the Delawares several times a year. There was an old hermit that lived out there in the 30's through the 50's. We found his dugout one time. Lots of cool stuff around it. Now what would make a man live in such unforgiving country all alone? Hiding out I expect. Prolly dug that hole you're talking about...

if you would have dug around you would have found at least 100 arrowheads in that cave

Meth and weed is close to Caddo Lake, Everything else was in Dimmit, Zavala, Webb and Maverick counties. The bodies were just out in pastures not near the cars. Deer down there are too big to just leave.

I have found .50 cal ammo, arrow heads, stone scrapers, a minnie ball, couple of decent deer skulls with antlers attachments, what was left of an old log cabin in NM, horse shoes, old brass, a guy sitting in my box blind, old arrows, a back pack with some old clothes and a little bit of jerky, 3 wets hiding in some bushes while I opened a gate , an old pint whiskey bottle with a swig left in it, shell and snail fossils , and I know I have forgotten some stuff.

I found a dog tag looking thing with a creamatorium name and number on it a couple of weeks ago at our place in Bowie. Kind of unnerving

Was hunting in Virginia in the late '80's and found a confederate soldiers belt buckle and some musket balls. Still have it.

I sure would like to see pics of some of this stuff.

I found an old iron hatchet head once, on the ground right in front of my deer stand. I put an old handle on it and had my little nephew convinced it was the hatchet George Washington had used to chop down the cherry tree. Sure, it was on its' fifth handle and third head, but it was the original!

I found and old rusted out car from the early 20's next to some adobe ruins about a hundred feet from a small river about 20 miles south of Raton N.M. The nearest road was over 5 miles away. I found a couple of flint skinning knives south of Brownwood about 3 feet apart.

last year i was walking through the pasture, and came across an old longhorn cap that i had lost while chasing a cow through a creek on a horse about 8yrs ago, the really strange thing is tht it was found UP stream from where i lost it.....

Two years ago when i arrived at camp there was a dog there. It had cactus thorns all over it and was skinny. We gave it water and food and it was a pretty good dog...just slept all the time but it didnt obey simple commands like sit. Well one of the guys at camp decides to take it home and get it checked out a the vet and give it to a dog shelter. It ends up at his neighbors house who just so happens to be mexican. And sure enough the dog responded to mexican commands. seeing that our place is only about 20 miles form the border, the dog could have possibly made its way from mexico.

Indian paintings on rock walls in Unit 2 New Mexico. Made me think how great it was for me to be hunting in the same land once used by ancient Indians. My guide said Buffalo once populated that area but have long since been killed out.

I found a 100rd mag for an AR....in a Bow Only area.

now that i think about it, ive found some other things, ive found old trucks, lots of crap people have dumped in the creeks. one day i found a big glass jug that still had a seal on it, nothing inside, so i poke the seal with my knife, and it lets out some air (u could hear it) not sure what was in there, but it was wierd. My grandpa walked up on an old still back in the day. (he was looking for a cow, not hunting)

After the big flood in the Hill Country the first weekend of deer season in 1998, we found an ice chest with a bottle of MD wine in it that had floated from upriver somewhere. We still have the wine in the kitchen at the house. We keep claiming that after we kill the next big deer, we will break it open and celebrate. I bet it is some nasty stuff by now, but it has been aged. We also hunted outside of Cuba, New Mexico and found lots of broken pieces of pottery. Saw some big mule deer also.

Arrowheads, an old K-bar that was still in decent shape, sizer rock for arrows, etc. Nothing really cool yet.

I find empty water bottles, shoes, coats, and plastic garbage bags with holes cut out for the head and arms, rain coats I guess that wets leave when they pass through. Empty cans of food with the tops cut out. Small fires where they heated their food and plastic spoons and empty cans laying near. I found a double edged dagger one time near my cattle pens.

I was cutting senderos on the ranch next to me with my dozer a couple of ago and came up on a pile of empty back packs. Found a flagging ribbon on my highfence yesterday that would reflect when you shined a light on it on the back of the ranch.

I found a...ummm.... blow up doll once when I was young kid, didn't know what is was so I asked my Dad, he said, "a product of bad social skills..."

Found a burned car...found a stolen mustang...about three years ago we caught a bad boar hog and left out in a hurry taking dogs to the vet, hunted in the same area a couple of months ago, dogs bayed a sow, caught her right where the boar was, found a dog lead we'd left there. I found a NICE set of rattling horns in my box stand that Id locked(they cut the lock off for me too)

Back in the 1960s I was hunting in the Gila wilderness of New Mexico. I was makeing my way to the top of a ridge to look over in the drainage of the Gila River. Ahead of me about 40 yds there was something that didn't look right by a Pinyon Tree. I kept walking up the slope but changed my dirrection to get closer to the object that seemed out of place. When I got withing aboth 20 yards of the object it looked like a rifle leaning against the trunk of the tree. I got closer I could see it was a lever action but it was all rusty. when I got closer I could see that it's stock was completely rotted out from the heel to about mid way to the toe, and about 5 inches up the back of the stock, like temites had eaten it. I could now see that it was indeed very rusted, and you could tell it had been there for some years. It was an 1892 Winchester 44-40 carbine. The lever was rusted shut, and nothing worked, but I could see the brass corrosion in the loading gate where a cartridge base was slowing rotting away. I carried the rifle home, and bathed it in break free for about three weeks and finally got the lever to open, and there was a corroded round in the chamber. I later found there were four rounds in the magazine tube as well.

I certainly wish that old rifle could talk, and tell why it was left there so many years before I found it. I have often woundered if the owner may have shot a deer, or elk, packed the meat out, and then either couldn't get back, got hurt or couldn't find his rifle. May be something more synester, you know that is Apache country, and was an outlaw, and rustler hang out and wild untill the early 1900s.

While hunting on Ft. Benning, GA I found the fuselage of a jet, several rusted out vehicles and a clip for a 742 with .30-06 ammo still in it. At a lease we had in Upshur county my uncle and I found an old farming tool you pull by horse(not sure of the name of it) and my wife swears there was an old graveyard there because of how the rocks were laid on top of a hill.

50-70s throckmorton/ haskell line , case of old dynamite,airplane prop, granite monument to young man drug to death by team of green mules, new mexico old belt bowie knife, spoons, plate. colorado winchester action barrel, partial skeleton, dallas trinity bottoms 2dead guys, 2 guns, 1 dead guy no gun.

I have found a arrow head, and a big ole fixed blade buck knife still in its leather sheath! The sheath was all rotted, but the knife is still good!

Also found a few round iron balls about the size of a big marble! I have no idea what they are!

Well, dang. I hope to never find anything like that. I found an animal skull today, probably a possom's, and I'm planning to bleach it since it was almost whole and has most of its teeth.

The only thing Ive found, besides the usual old farm house foundations and such was a line of clothes headed toward denton creek, they had been there a while. Wonder what they wore when walking out?

My brother bought a piece of hunting ground that had an old barn on it that was about to collapse. We decided just to burn it, but he wanted to go through it to see if there was any antiques laying around yet. He didn't find anything but as an afterthought took the old door latches off. Stamped on the back of the latches were swastikas. He did a little research and it turns out when the socialists took over the German government in the 30's some of the exports at the time had the official nazi stamp.

As a kid out quil hunting I use to find the giant pentrified shells that they now sell for over 100.00 each. I just gave them away to friends and family. Whoever wanted one. I bet I had to have given away at least 200 of them. Also, found a very rusted up shotgun before.

Out duck hunting my dad and I also found a nest of barn owls in the duck blind once. We called the GW and they came out and got them.

Those are a dime a dozen up here in Jack Co. and everywhere around it. Most are still in use, and are part of the landscape just as the trees are.

I was hunting in the National Forest once when I found this guy who had been lost for a week because someone removed his reflective trail markers, making it impossible for him to find his way out. With no compass or sense of direction to guide him, he had been walking helplessly in circles, stopping only to eat wild berries and drink creek water, even though he was less than 100 yards from the road.

Did you admit that you were the one that removed his trail markers? Did he then apologize for being so ignorant of the ways of the woods and immediately sign up at the nearest Grizzly Adams school?

Are you kidding? He was so glad to see another human being, he wouldn't leave my sight. I had to lead him back to his truck just so I could go back into the woods and continue my hunt.

While I was pheasant hunting in KS last weekend I found a mule deer in high crp grass. It had been dead about a week, was an 11 pt that our guide said would go 170+. He said he knew the GW real well and if we reported it he would give us a carcass tag and I could take the head with me. So we called him out, but when he saw what it was it all changed. He said he couldnt be contributing to these poachers, and sawed the head off and took it with him, he wouldnt even let us take a picture of it after he got there. So much for trying to do the right thing. i bet he is gonna have a nice mount on his wall.

I was moose hunting in alaska last year on the Melozitna River. No guide, no nothing. Me and my buddy were floating the river in a raft and were stopping at oxbow lakes to check for moose. We popped out of the river bottom to check this one oxbow, and found ourself in an old trappers camp.

There was a old log cabin with an earthen roof and dog sleds, old snow mobile parts, a fleshed out grizzly hide. as we made our way through the camp, we realized part of it was kinda new. We opened a door and saw a gas lamp burning inside. No one was around, but we lit out in a hurry.

We didn't want to be the two Texas boys that pissed off some local Eskimo trappers and ended up buried in the tundra!

I found an old us postal service saddle bag down in a gully in jack county

We hunt a place outside Comstock a couple times a year and that place is an unusual thing gold mine. The two coolest things that we have found was an old artillery training range for WWII and a half of a prop plane.

The area of the ranch that the artillery range was on is covered in .50cal cases, steel cores, separated jackets, intact bullets and occasionally intact ammo. On top of a hill about 500yrds away there is a dump truck load of .50 BMG cases, must be the firing line. At the impact site there are old farm implements, cars, trucks, and other equipment used for target practice. Littered all over the impact zone are pieces of exploded bombs (we guess they are mortars), but it is really cool to find intact ones. Last year we spent an afternoon walking around down there and found several that we brought home.

Last year when we were there we were driving around on the last day and found half a plane by the edge of a ravine, first we found a wing and farther over the edge we could see part of the fuselage. We know for sure that it wasn�t there the year before because that is where we hunt rams, so we told the land owner. She said drug runners are always crashing around that area and would call the BP and sheriff. It will be interesting to go back this year and find out what came out of that.

Oh and the Devil�s river runs through it, on the cliffs at the river there are Indian drawings on the rocks, too cool.

I don�t know exactly what they are but they make a heck of a paper weight, AND toe smasher.

That looks like something that might have been used back during WWII to train Air Force pilots and navigators. Not wanting to drop actual bombs, a member of the crew might drop one of those from a very low elevation. My dad recalled the time he dropped a small sack of flour from a B-25 for that same purpose. It accidently hit a guy who happened to be standing atop a tank. (The Army Air Corp and Army were under the same branch of the service back then.) I remember my dad telling me how the bag rolled that guy right off the top of the tank and may have damn near killed him. No question what you found would have.

I would have probably called the authorities over this one.

These are cool stories. Makes me want to go to the ranch in sanderson just to go looking for things. The owner has TONS of arrowheads that he has found out there.

Aww dangit it..after reading this thread I think I'll do some searching on my place this weekend. There are at least 1 or 2 old structures on it that I've never poked around much...and I bet my creek bed might have some arrow heads around it..

I've never seen a rattler on my place..if I get bit by a rattler while I'm looking around nooks and crannies I don't usually haunt, I'm gonna kick someones butt! (after my son sucks the poison out that is).

Here are a few things that I found out hunting. The neat things Old knife in rafters of old falling down hunting cabin in Dripping Springs. Old Remington Blackpowder pistol along side river bank on the San Gabriel. Revolver cylinder in plowed filled while dove hunting. The cannon ball was found by a friend working the pipe-line around Oklahoma. Other smaller trinkets all over Texas along with about 40 Arrowheads

Thats is friggin awesome. I need to keep an eye out next time I am out in the field.

Yeah this thread makes me pay more attention to the things I am kicking outta the way, the next time we go down south I am going to spend a whole day taking pictures and looking for cool stuff.

hell years ago... we had a place the river cut thru and one evening walking about 50 yrds of river bank found where some poacher gutted a deer.. was mad at first but felt better when we noticed leaning on a tree about 6 yds away was his rifle...

Have that ordnance inspected. It might be an old dummy bomb, and it might be an old live one.

Old ordnance, even Civil War stuff, kills people even today. The French Army has a unit that does nothing but defuse stuff found from World War ONE (they haven't gotten to WW2-specific stuff yet)....and they lose a couple guys a year when stuff blows unexpectedly.

I have found some old indian head startings...that's about it. i did work with a guy awhile back and he was mule deer hunting in west Texas and decided to take a rest. As he was sitting there he noticed something out of place under some trees and went to investigate. The guy found an old mexican saddle that still had all the bags and pouches still attached. He took it back to camp and the landowner let him have it. I think they estimated the saddle to be about 100 years old. He has the mount on display at his house.

Last year we found 3 empty 280 rem cases in Joshua's box.

I found a A/C thermostat cover. No earthly reason for it to be where it was. I am guessing, it got picked up by a tornado somewhere and deposited on my land.

I was working at the lease and a screwdriver came up missing. Two years later I found that screwdriver and the cows have been eating on it.

Right after I got my lease near Graham I was walking the East fence line and saw something shiny on the other side of the fence. It was what looked like a pretty new microwave oven laying in the bushes. About 1/2 mile East of that location there were 3 trailers that looked like they had been destroyed by a tornado. I figure the microwave had to come from one of those trailers.

On the lease I had before buying my place I found a 1951 Ben Franklin 50 cent piece along an old (and I mean old) fence line bordering Falcon Lake. Figure it was lost by the workers putting in the fence back when the coin was new. Keep it in my wallet as a lucky piece.

Not exactly "while hunting", but since I bought my place a few years back, I find stuff all the time. Previous owners had the place over 30 years and pretty much left it 'as is' when I took possession and at first it was like a big treasure hunt. Just a few weeks ago I found a nice archery tower in some thick cover I didn't know I owned. Found lots of stuff (knives, watches, arrows) up in the rafters over the bunks. Wierdest was a tub of Kama Sutra oil (fortunately unopened)and some incense stuffed behind a cabinet. I left that for my hunting buddys that stay over in the bunk house.

Just this week I found a cross down by the river, landowner already knew it was there. It reads " One man unknown 1881". I found that very interesting.

COOL, Its the first time I'v read 6 pages of any post.I found a back pack 8 miles back in the adirondacks. It had a camillios knife with a 10 " blade , some camping stuff and a bottle of 12 year old brandy. The rumer was a hunter got thrown off his horse and lost a backpack,rifle, and a horse. We left the brandy at our camping area under a rock and went back hunting 10 years later and got hammered.

I have found a pile of arrowheads over the years. I used to look for them regularly. He are a few, mostly from our ranch in Brown County Texas.

I found this arrowhead in my front yard after cutting a ditch for a water line. I found a gas tank off an old Sea King motor last week and what is funny, is that in 5 years you will need a boat and motor to be in the same area.

Dead body.....

Christmas Eve morning 2005. Headed down a dirt county road in Fort Bend County with my dad, with a norhtern blowning in. A road that we have traveled many many times. It runs between 2 pieces of property we used to lease. Just got done hunting some potholes and managaged a couple birds. Headed down a long straightaway and up ahead I could see a big black lump on the side of the road. At first I thought it was a hog someone had dumped so I told my dad to pull up to it cause I wanted to see if it had any cutters on it.

The closer we go to it I realized that it wasn't a hog. Pulled right up next to it and to my horror it was a body. Some one had murdered a guy and dumped him and then tried to burn the body on the side of the road. The body was laying on an old entrance to a rice field in a washout from a culvert. It was a disturbing sight. Clothes all melted to the body, the body was in an awkward shape with the right leg broken just below the knee and folded under the body with the bone sticking out. The rest was all burned up on the topside. Body was fresh and had been dumped some time the night before. I had just been out there 2 days prior and had driven down that road. I keep thinking about the what if I had driven up on them when they were dumping the body?

Needless to say we called the sheriff and had to stand out in the cold for for the 3 hours while they interviewed us. Never found out if they found killer. I never felt the same about goin down that road by my self any more.

Only thing I have found was an old Michelob bottle, and it was empty so not that cool of a find.

a Flathead V8 laying next to what appears to be the remains of about a 49 Ford. The previous owners of the land appear to have never thrown anything made out of metal away. We're still finding pieces, parts, and random stuff laying around the ranch.

While hiking around a ghost mining town north of creede colorado i found several whiskey bottle necks and lids..i also found a boot sole...it was kinda neat walking thru the old town seeing where the main street had been and noticing what each building was used for just by looking at its remnants..i pictured tell sackett there shavin off my moustache...my brother found a huge spear head on our place in coke county..the best part of it is that he was sitting on the privy when he saw it...we had all walked by it several times and he saw it while he was taking one..we also found an old wood burning cook stove on that place...

When I was in my teens I found a pair of old worn out shoes at the top of a draw. What was funny about it was the night before I heard my first Mountain Lion cry. At the time I didn't know what that sound was so when I found the shoes I figured someone had been attacked and their shoes fell off. Realistically it was actually some travelers from Mexico had left a pair of shoes on one of their stops.

A guy I used to work with caught one while fishing the Trinity River a few years back. The guy had drowned trying to rescue a dog after he had already pulled a little girl out of the river.

keep this near the top this is an interesting read. i never find anything interesting, only stuff that I or my father in law have misplaced/lost on past excursions.

On my place back in California, we had acreage and 2 year round streams on our horse property, with many stands of hundred year old coastal live oaks. We had a heck of a time with the yotes and after shooting one with my Mini-14 I went to retrieve it. He was lying on top of a granite boulder under a huge multi-trunked oak tree that had been dropping leaves and acorns on that boulder for generations. I say boulder, but it was at least as big as most people's living rooms.

Anyway, as I was walking along the relatively flat top of the boulder I dang near broke my ankle. I had tripped in what was a prefectly shaped bowl. After scrapping away the leaves, I found 3 native indian metates that were used to grind up the acorns.

After that initial find I made it a habit of going out and looking around and subsequently found a portable metate (that was since stolen) and a bunch of pictographs on the face of an old boulder outcropping.

I have to say that the yote I shot actually ended up saving my home and those of the few neighbors I had in that little valley.
A few years after my discoveries we found out that the state water authority was looking for new storage areas and our little valley fit the bill perfectly. They wanted to dam up one end of the canyon then flood everything, including our homes and land.

At the time I had a government job that required me to review projects for environmental impacts under CEQA. Part of that was cultural impacts as well, so I had an idea what to do. I notified the local Ipai band of the Kumeyaay indian tribe of what I had found and the ensuing involvement of the tribe was enough to make the state look else where. They didn't want the hassle.

Not hunting related, but our old house used to be a stage stop on the Butterfield Overland Express Co. When we did a remodel of one portion of the structure, it was still the old single wall construction. In other areas we found all sorts of graphitti in what was once a part of the bunkhouse. We also found an area where someone had drawn a dartboard onto the wood and there where literally thousands of little dart holes. Scores where written right onto the wood. It was cool to imagine the guys passing time between stage visits.

We've found a lot of broken glassware, pottery and hundreds of glass marbles every time the rains get heavy. Weird.

we were hunting in Llano back in the early 90s. Last weekend of the season I decided to hunt on a track of land away from camp that no one uses. Decided to head up and check my feeder Friday evening before hunting Sat to make sure the feeder was running. We pulled up around 5 pm and underneath our feeder was a small vehicle. My first thought was someone was loading up a deer that they had just shot. Pulled up beside it and there was a man in the front seat with the window down. My dad said wait here I will go talk to him. MY dad rounds the front of the truck and turns ghostly white, not good for a man already have had a heart attack. THe man had shot himself in the head with the gun still in his hand in the other seat. It had to have been within the last couple of days. Luckly I did not go to the standin the moring at dark, this would have been horrific at 6 am. Come to find out supposedly he was a gay man from Georgetown that had recently split with his boy friend. I keep thinking what would have happened if I would not have decided to go to that stand that weekend. No one would have been by there for the next 5 months.

About 30 years ago while squirrel hunting Mississippi, i came across a soda bottle with a deer head on it. It was Buck Brand soda water Dug it up and brought it home and cleaned it up. About 15 years ago when found out via the internet it was made in Uvalde.

While elk hunting in New Mexico, we stopped to rest sitting on a big rock overlooking a meadow. I looked down and noticed a very old tobacco can. Picked it up and also found an old rifle casing (forgot exactly what kind). In my mind, someone had sat on that rock many years before to rest and smoke and I bet a big old elk had come out in that same meadow I was looking at.

I didnt find this but a co worker did on there lease in Palo pinto co 13yrs ago. After a rain he noticed a bike handle sticking out of the ground. He dug it up and found not only a bike but every thing you could think of wraped in plastic. I mean Gas cans cooking supplys can opener plates. They called the police because at first they were freaked out and thought some bike rider off 20 might have fell prey to a nut case. The dig was about 20ft long and had someones belongings from there entire life in it acept for ID. The police said they didnt know what to think. Its just one of the stangest things I ever heard of.

Found this big guy on Fort Campbell, KY on my way to my stand one morning in 2006. I think he roughly grossed somewhere in the low 130s.

Had a 2000 acre lease in southern Hamilton County near Evant for many years. We found several old homesteads with nothing left but a foundation and some old plows and farm equipment. One had an old root cellar. Not a big deal, but I found an old, old Listerine bottle next to our camp house. After reading this thread, I wish I'd have taken more time to scout for stuff on that place while we had it.

We also found an old rusted out pickup (Chevy I think) from the '30s or '40s in a creekbed behind our camp on a lease we had just southeast of Comanche in '05/'06.

Back when I was a kid we lived in an undeveloped area of northwest San Antonio.
I was out stalking cottontails with my pellet gun one day and found an old double barrel damascus shotgun. It had exposed hammers and everything. It was actually in the hollow of a big liveoak and was pretty well weather protected.
The wood was still good. Had a steel buttplate.

I only remember it as being damascus because of the unusual steel swirl color on it. As a little kid I didn't know too much about it.

Sad thing is I now don't recall what ever happened to it. I could kick myself for not having it. Also, I cannot recall the manufacturer or if it was even stamped.

I was hnting rabbits this christmas holiday in Mexico at my wife's families Rancho. I found a couple of arrow heads and forgot the dern things there.

I was driving to hunt ducks in Katy. I was turning from one road onto another. I noticed something red almost like a reflector off in the distance. By the time i got to the blind i could hear sirens in that direction. The next day I checked with the sheriffs deputy that works that area and he said it was a car burning in a ditch. Turns out a guy shot himself while driving the car. Which subsequently crashed and caught fire.

At my ranch in Kim, Colorado we found a a trailer, which we later found out belonged to a ranch hand who was hired by the previous owner. We believed that he was most likely using it as a meth lab. We also found moon shine tubs that had been used in like the 50's and 60's. Down in the canyons of the ranch we have found many caves with carvings from indians in them.

At my ranch in Rotan, Texas we found an old deer blind which we think is from the 50's. We have also found many pieces of burnt flint, this probably means that we had indians there at one time.

After reading all of these stories, it is gonna scare me now to go out hunting on my own.

When I was a kid, Dad and I happened across an old Model A buried in the bank of a creek (in Delta County)

Mom and Dad's place had an oil well on it (we're guessing during the boom that started in Ranger) There's lots of old wire rope (cable) and some rusted out tools, hardware and other stuff.

I found a perfect Fiesta Ware bowl on top of a fence post. No telling how long it'd been there.

I've found quite a few old fossils and arrowheads out traipsing around as well.

I've got an old Coca Cola syrup bottle that I found in an old barn that I took shelter in during a rain storm one dove season. Label is still in decent shape. I keep unusual coins in it (wheat pennies, 50� pieces, silver dollars, etc)

Man I'm gonna go treasure hunting this weekend! GF has a family ranch thats been in the fam for at LEAST 100 years, they have all kinds of stuff out there

these bottles were sent over to the americas on ships way back in the day. there were racks built with holes in them in the bottom of the ship and they cradled the bottles for transport. i have several of these bottles. i also found the remnants of a whiskey still back in south carolina while hunting, when i was growing up.

Two graves. We were on BLM land near and maybe a reservation in northwest NM. We uncovered most of it before we realized what we had stumbled accross. We stacked the rock and left it as it was and didn't say a word as unearthing remains on a reservation just might get you an antlered-handle knife through the forearm (but mostly for respect).

At my grandparents land we found an old van from the 60's-70's that still has enough paint were we can read it delivered diapers. The windows are gone and its pretty much a rusted shell. Google earthed the land and about 20 yards from the van it looks like there might be another vehicle in some very heavy brush, going to check on that soon. Also found an old coke bottle about 3' deep while digging a post hole

Oh and I was just told that there might be an old box of guns in my grandparents attic! Have to check that out soon!

South Texas lease?

A old car out in the woods that had license plates from 1954 on it.. The year I was born. I did have to get a screwdriver..lol

on a place i hunted near rotan there was an indian grave on the highest point of the place overlooking the double mountain fork of the brazos..i didnt see anything but it had been excavated and was mostly a hole...then on my place i have now i found a hole thats approximately 18 inches wide in a circle and bottomless..there was an old broken whiskey bottle top next to it from way back..i assumed it was a wildcatter hole..supposedly there is a spring on the place that i havent found..its a very rough place...and oh yea the legendary lead mines of kent and stonewall county from the late 1800's are supposedly somewhere near north of my place between us and the pitchfork...what i found : holes

I've found a pocket knife and a dozen of so duck decoys.

its not what i found but what i didnt find! got to the lease one evening and got everthing setup in camp and got ready for the hunt in the morning. while walking to the stand i remember thinking how did i go to far my stand had been in that spot for years. once the sun came up i realized why i couldnt find it, the stand and the feeder where missing!!! never found out what happened.

I was duck hunting on the devils river last year when I found someones pack in the river. It had a couple cans of beans in it, summer sausage n crackers, can of snuff unopened (it still tasted fine to me) and a custom knife from Moore Makers Inc out of Matador, TX. The guy's name was on the pack. I called the knife maker and had them look through their records for the guys name, but they couldn't find it. Said he must have bought it from a distributor at a gun show or something. So I tried to return it. That would have made a better story. The handle is cracked and the blade has some rust so sometime I plan to send it back to Matador, Tx and have them rebuild it for me. Cool find.

I also found a stray mangy dog on my lease just wandering around. I tried hunting with it but the dog was WORTHLESS, just horrible. I finally ran it off when it kept trying to steal my dinner and eat from my [censored] can. Dog tag read "Garrett".

I know where that granite monument is. I loved hunting that hillside overlooking that canyon bottom. Used to be owned by some of my distant family.

now that is one I would let play itself out!

I have lots of stories, but this is the one that comes to mind the most.

Near Ft Chadbourne, not far from Bronte I was on a lease ajoining Kickapoo mountain. A very historical area. From the top of Kickapoo mountain I could make out what I am sure was remnants of the Butterfield Overland Trail. There was a small peak on our lease with a couple big rocks balanced on top. A bigger one in the distance was actually called Nipple Peak on the map to give you an idea what it looked like. It was a great vantage point to sit over a large area of our lease that I could glass. I was trying to pinpoint the location of a Turkey that Spring day.

While I was sitting at the base of that big rock on the peak; I looked down beside me to find a large thin corner tang flint knife. The tip was missing, but the main body with the corner tang was present. The flaking was perfect like a piece of art. My mind thought of a ritual piece or maybe a burial piece left behind from a dead indian once stuffed under the rock. But more likely it was damaged during it's construction and just chunked aside by the hunter that had sat there before me. After all, the spot would have been just as good of a hunting vantage point 2000 years ago as it was that day. Only 2000 years ago he would have been looking for Bison coming through the pass instead of a Turkey.

I pulled out some tp paper I had brought along and tightly wrapped the Corner Tang Knife under several folds of paper to insure it would arrive home with me undamaged. I then put the wrapped piece in my breast shirt pocket and buttoned it closed. It was safe from any harm and there was no way it could get lost. I even remember patting my chest and feeling it there as I thought about the men before me who had hunted from the very spot.

Moments later I did spot my Turkey. I was able to run down off the hill to move ahead of the bird and set up with my call. Just as the Turkey was coming into range I was actually blown by a Jackrabbit of all things. The Jack ran right up to me and made a sound that I swear sounded like the bark of a dog causing the Turkey to putt and run away. But I had a hunch the Turkey was headed for a stock tank in the area. I circled and ran ahead again setting up on the tank dam. I was right. In short time I had my Turkey.

I walked back to camp carrying my bird over my shoulder. I set the bird and call by a tree and leaned my gun there to take a picture. I thought it would be cool to include the corner tang in the picture by setting it next to my box call.

So I unbuttoned my shirt pocket and pulled out the wad of tissue paper and began to unfold it, but it did not feel right. There was nothing there.

Update: Went to my grandparents house today, went to the attic, found the white rectangular box the guns were supposed to be in, opened it up and found a couple old blankets and some silverfish. very disappointed! There was even a shotgun in there that belonged to my great grandpa!

John, I used to hunt off Mcdonald Road and 277 8 miles north of Bronte just north of Nipple Peak. there was a pad of concrete approx 40x40 the old timers in Bronte said it was used for a dance floor for parties at old Fort Chadbourne.

One time while just walking across the ranch I stumbled across a pair of work boots that looked fairly new along a fenceline we shared with another ranch. It seemed random they were out there, I left them alone and just kept walking.

Your talking about hunting near Hwy 277 and McDonald road...that is very close to the Ranch where we are going to be coming out and hunting this fall. Going to be my first trip out west.

To add to the stories when I lived in Oregon, my family was up in the Cascade range on the Willamtte River getting river loam for the strawberry beds. My Grandfather was visiting from Virgina and he was digging up some small Douglas seedlings to take back east. The Oregon trail runs fairly close to this portion of the river, ruts are still visible. While my grandfather was digging up one of the seedlings, he unearthed a handle and part of a blade from a Sabre of some sorts. You could tell it had a wooden handle and most of the knuckle guard was still intact. There was also about 2" of the blade that was still there also. Makes you wonder what happened to it and why someone dumped it. Guess that is the coolest thing I have been involved with finding.

Mongo, the lease we hunted on was about a mile west of 277 the south border was Mcdonald road and the north border was Ross Road. LOTS of deer down there, never shot anything bigger than 120 B&C but saw a few out of season.

A trespasser walking under my treestand with a blaze orange hat, vest and a loaded .270. I was bowhunting hogs. It wasn't any season and the land he claimed he thought he was on was WMA land that is archery only for hogs. He knew what he was doing. Scary situation. I can't stand trespassers! They give us regular joes a bad name with landowners, especially when they leave their trash in our stands.

Another time I was rifle hunting and found an older fella (about 70) in my box stand. About 300 yards down the pasture I found his son who knew the guy that I shared the lease with and told me he had permission. He was surprised when I immediately called my my buddy (in front of him) and asked. Turned he was lying. Felt sorry for the guy's dad. He apologized to me and explained that his son told him it was alright, they had permission. I was quite ticked at the liar. I was not as kind. They both left and I never saw them again. My buddy never heard from that friend again either.

When I was about 14, I was deer hunting and like most 14 year olds, I got bored pretty quickly. I needed to go to the bathroom, so I climbed down out of the stand and walked the recommended (by Dad) 100 yards downwind before dropping my pants. I had leaned my rifle against a tree, and when I finished, I decided to walk over to a stream a few feet away to wash my hands.
While I was dipping my hands in the water, I found a really big arrowhead (probably actually a spear point). I rinsed it off, and then stood up to go back to my stand. When I turned around, there was a 6 point buck standing right behind me, and between me and my rifle. He turned and started walking away, and I thought I could get back to my gun in time, but I stepped on a trig and he took off like a rocket. I picked up my gun and climbed back up into the stand, and forgot about the arrowhead until we were on the way home. We went back hunting the next weekend, and I looked for the arrowhead for a half hour, but never saw it again.

This one isn't a hunting story, but a friend bought an old farm back in the sixties, and a lot of it was really heavy brush in the Colorado River bottom. He was walking around on his new farm one day and came across an ancient (Model T or A, I can't remember)Ford pickup. The hood was missing, and there was a 12 foot tall tree growing up through the engine compartment. He got me to bring a saw and I cut the tree just above the engine and then below the truck at ground level. We used his tractor to tow it back to the barn, and he sold the truck to some collector who actually restored it.

It looks like you have hunted where I will be hunting this fall. I believe this ranch is owned by the Lewis family if I remember correctly. These guys that I am going hunting with have hunted this property for over 10 years. Look forward to getting out there. We will be leaving Nov. 12 from NC and heading that way. There is also a south ranch about 10 miles south of Bronte that we will be hunting also. Cant wait to get out there.

Found this van on my Grandma's property. We dont know how old it is but we've shot the heck out of it.

Here at the ranch I have found numerous indian artifacts, including an arrowhead I wizzed on. Was cruising the ranch and stopped to take a leak, look down and there it was. Campfire ring and whisky bottles from oil field workers from the 20.s. An old red wagon and an old truck body. This year I found where a lion had killed a couple of spikes.

I didn't find it, but one of the guys I was on the lease with found a piece of the space shuttle. It was about as big as a truck fender. Pretty creepy thing to hold in your hand.

We weren't hunting but my uncle and I came across an old Kiowa camp ground up near Booker Texas in Lipscomb County. We found several spear tips, and the metal of an old winchester lever action. You could still see the circles in the ground from where the teepees had sat.

Wasnt hunting but we had an Indian grave show up in our road one day after a heavy rain. Turns out it was a Caddo Indian and he had a musket wound in his pelvis bone. It was pretty cool to see and Indian grave he was buried with arrowheads a hatchet and some other stuff. The smithsonian ppl came and dug him.

WOW. I read all 24 pages of this. Had to recharge my laptop battery once. I've found a few whole arrow heads on the side of a hill just outside of Glenrose of the Puluxy river that was litterly littered with thousands of little broken arrow heads, 2 old forged branding irons, several old cars and some old, old beer bottles from the early 1900's. I amazed at the guns found leaning against trees and the dead bodies.

There was some guy on here that found a human skull...I thought there were pictures in this post but I scanned through it really fast and didn't see it...creepy fo sho...

I once was crossing a fence and looked down to see a mens ring laying on the ground. I guess someone had lost it crossing the same place. It was not woth much.

I found an old rimfire shell casing with an "H" on the end that had been fired/misfired twice as it had 2 sets of crimps. I showed to it to someone and they told me it was from the 1870's. I found it about 200 yds from an old stage coach route and a spring.

Arrowheads, arrowheads, and arrowheads...amazing. Must have been the indians version of shot gun shells or 22 shells lost in the grass. Makes you wonder how they could spend so much time making them but just leave them around or we just happen to find a bunch of them. Cool, knowing some guy made them 100 + years ago or more.

Old beer, soda bottles and cans with the old aluminum pull tops....kids about 20 years or younger don't know what that is.

I don't know how unusual this is, but I could have gone my whole life and would have been happy to not see this.

I was in a deer stand on a pine plantation, which was about 25' off the ground.

It was early morning, 0-dark-thirty, and in the tree next to me, as the light was starting to come in, I could see how one of the limbs had grown rather odd. As time progressed and it got to be enough light that I could now see really well, I looked back over to the odd grown tree limb. And what I got to see was not a deformed tree, but a rather large snake coiled up and wrapped on the limb.

Once it warmed up, I got to see this snake cork screw itself down the tree, which tells me, it got up the same way. This thing was long, and to this day, I haven't a clue what kind of snake it was.

All I know is when I have to climb into a fixed stand, I always take extra caution before I climb on in.

Crap, all I ever find is arrow heads! Seriously, old lease in Mason Co had an Indian camp on it back in the 1850's or so. The ranchers father had the land since the 1860's, when he came there from Ga, during the Civil War. Also had a grave of an sheep herder that died around the same time. Most of the arrow heads were broken/chipped, but my BinL found a perfect one. Other than that, some old horse shoes, shed horns.
Also same lease, a 1920' Menard, Tx Coke bottle and I think a DP bottle from when the pipeline was put in.

I have found arrowheads from Texas and Colorado. Along with those I have picked up a few pieces of pottery and grinding stones and a pipe that looks like it was made out of shell.
I found the remains of an old still. Went back later with metal detector and found an old pocket knife about 8" deep in the dirt.
Wasn't hunting but doing a job and found some dinosaur tracks that we uncoverd with a backhoe. One of them is now in the Smithsonian Institute. I came across a piece of petrified wood that I kicked and couldn't loosen. I came back with a shovel and dug for many hours and unearthed a huge petrified tree trunk full of what I think is amber.

It seems as there are alot of "found" guns! Did people 100-150 years ago leave that many guns lying around or are they "A friend found"?

Not saying it isn't so, just seems like alot. I could see someone getting killed out in the woods back in the 1800's and a gun staying where they dropped it, but I would think the bad guys would have picked them up.... like in the Westerns, but most are layed up on a tree or fence.

In Shackelford County arrowheads, the sideplate off an 1873 winchester rifle, tin cup and a perfect 1854 quarter dollar.
In Colorado a camo Ruger rifle leaning under a giant spruce tree, box of 300 win ammo, cheap pair of Nikon Binos. I used to go up every year in late may to help a buddy clear the trails for summer trail rides and we found this stuff.

I wanna find a gun, hopefully not one that has been used as a murder weapon...

Ok so here's a weird one that happened Saturday. After hunting for 6 hours and not seeing a thing, Redman and I walked back to the truck only to find out the battery was dead. So as he stands on the toolbox trying to get reception 6 birds fly over. Not just any birds. Long legged, big birds. About the size of the blue herrings that fish in ponds. Weird thing was that the underside of these birds was hot pink and white!!! So automatically I assume they're flamingos. I find out, after having a sheriff's deputy jump us off, that I'm not the only cat seeing these flamingos around Sommerville. So if anyone of y'all go hunt there watch out, it'll catch you off guard.

Found a number of squatters' camps on our W. TX land, including a two story, cinder-block building with attached garage and full basement and two smugglers' Chevy trucks in the garage. Too many vehicles to count; I've been trying to find a 1967 or '68 Mercury Cougar, again, that we found in 2005, but haven't had any luck. Found 19th century Corps of Engineers land markers. Below photos are all out on our land.

While in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 2001, one of my Sergeants looked down at his feet while we were out on Grenadillo Range and found an unfired pin-fire revolver cartridge that had to have been dropped prior to the establishment of the base in 1898.

I'm sure squatters built the building and smugglers just dumped their stuff there over the years after it was abandoned. There are 15-20 different squatter compounds out on our property.

Depends if you're fast enough to get it started and moving (if it moves) before the squatter puts a lot of holes in it with his rifle. He maintains it is his land, though he hasn't met the requirements to claim squatter's rights and the Sheriff wants him out of town.

It really is a long story, and I don't want to take us too off topic, but the short of it is that the surveys are antiquated and require the State to change where the El Paso County line is, which is a big, complicated deal.

But we don't have anything better to do than read a long story. Please enlighten us on the drama. Our lives are boring and we thrive off other peoples challenges.

Great thread. I just finished reading all 11 pages. Id definitely like to get my hands on what looks to be a first gen camaro in the bottom right of that last picture you got posted.

Who owns the 69 Camaro. I'll would like to try and purchase it.

On the blue car bottom right hand corner-it looks like it has '69 Camaro style tail light lenses, but the chrome on the lenses would only be present if the car was an RS. The fact that there is a white, reverse, light present in the center of the tail light tells me that they are NOT RS tail-lights. Further, no reverse lights located in the lower valance on the rear of the car means NON-RS. The rear bumper looks like it is off a '69 Firebird as the Camaros went straight across right above the license plate, were thinner over all, and had 2 little "down-legs" coming off the bumper vertically, and then bolting onto the lower valance.

It's an odd ball assortment of parts, but put me in line as a cash-buyer if no one else wants it. Yes, I'll even come & haul it off immediately. Can I hunt when I come for the car?


People mentioning finding guns... When I was a teenager in high-school, I worked for a rental car company. It was my job to vacuum the cars when they came back from being rented. I found 4 different hand-guns in a course of a couple of years, and got to keep them all as the customers never called back for them. So, either they were stolen, or otherwise the owner was too embarrassed to call back and ask about them. The company would hold them for 90 days and if no inquiry was made, we got to keep them! Other guys on the crew got guns as well.

And the most unusual thing I find when in the woods is piece of mind. It is so rare to find it when working/living in the city.

Haha, I knew I shouldnt have mentioned the car I knew there were bound to be some car guys on here. Good luck to anyone who tries to get that car and you're welcome for me pointing it out. My finders fee is a ride when youre done restoring it.

Cool thread. The only thing I've ever found while hunting is an OLD climber, I mean this thing had to be a prototype of the first climber ever. It was around the base of an old oak and the tree had grown into it severely.

I think that is a firebird based on the lights. The camaro lights were different as I remember.

Well, I've found little of interest in the SHNF. I find beer bottles of styles used in the '60s and '70s, and lots of beer cans (Bud Light seems to be the beer of choice of litterers.) Since I like my woods pristine, I cart all these out. The 2nd day of rifle season I did find a new fixed-blade hunting knife in a trail. I stuck it in a tree in case anybody came back for it, but it was still there last Sunday.

Not hunting, but back in the big 7-year drought of the '50s, I used to find lots of arrow heads along Cypress Creek (I think it is called) near Wimberley, down from Jacob's Well. I could pretty much find one any time I set my mind to it. After the drought ended, the 3 inch grass I was finding these in turned into 3 foot high grass.

Also, about a half-mile from Jacob's well, my Dad and I found the site of a covered wagon. We found an old machete, and a British cavalry sword with Lion-head pommel. I can't imagine anyone voluntarily leaving all this stuff there so I imagine the Comanches got this family.

Oh, and I found an old, straight sided bottle in a creek bottom near Ledbetter Texas. This was near the route of Gotcher's Trace.

Around 1960-1962, my father and I were searching in the small cave opposite the Garner Park Headquarters and found a perfectly shaped spear point under about a foot of dirt. My father didn't have the best of ethics, so instead of turning it in, he kept it.

Back in 1993 or 1994 I hunted with a buddy on Terlingua Ranch south of Alpine. We would sometimes walk around for hours looing for quail or rabbits during the day and when it was time to get back to the cabin (extremely remote area) we would walk to the top of a hill and find the cabin with binos and head back. Once we had been out a few hours and came across a small two man tent, with backpacks, sleeping bags and a large cooler. Everything had been there for some time as the cooler had remnants of extremely rotten food that had been chewed up by the yotes or whatever. There was some sort of circle about 30 feet wide made of rocks and had the dirt cleared out of it with designs drawn in the sand/dirt. It seemed very weird. At first I thought it to be some border crossers but then I got to thinking that maybe it was some college kids from Sul Ross State U in Alpine. All the stuff seemed like it matched and not just thrown together, sleeping bags, tent and cooler all were same color of red. There were even some hiking boots that had very little wear on them.

Back here at Fort Polk in 2006 I found an undetonated round from an AT-4 laying the grass one day while looking for some deer. It was no where near a range or impact area so I just hung it up on a tree and left it there. I find all kinds of other army stuff around here but most of the time its the usual stuff. But an AT-4 round???? Very odd!

BTW- If you don't know an AT-4 is a very large anti-tank weapon, sorta like the old bazooka.

While Hunting family land in Brazoria County I Uncovered a Bayonet and was told that was used during Texas revolution

Out at my cousins ranch in Southern Saskatchewan which is just 7 miles north of The Montana border we found an old US Calvary knife, brass buttons, and a few other old things we thought were possible calvary items when we were 13 or 14 at an old abandon homestead they have on their property. Surrounding the old homestead were several tipi rings all throughout their land. A couple years latter we were down at little Big Horn (pretty much straight south of their ranch but many miles away)taking the tour of Custers last stand and we saw some of the same artifacts we had found in this old farm stead in their museum.

Turns out that when the US Calvary had chased them into Canada it was on my cousins land that they hung up on until they starved out and were forced to head back south. The tipi rings and artifacts found on the land were from when they were there. The original homesteader must have found them and put them in their shed when they set the place up.

Other than that haven't found anything interesting.

My father in law owns a few acres in Covina Hills, Ca. Not too far from Pomona. There was an old Butterfield Stage Stop there because of a natural spring. He has found some interesting stuff there.

It's amazing what the people of that time were able to accomplish with the basic tools that they had.

property we used to hunt at in walker county had a old (people born in the late 1700's) cemetary on it. probably 15 or 20 graves in it. last person buried there was in 1985.

this year my buddy was walking down a creek on the ranch we were hunting on and found two rocks with pictographs on them, both of people shooting a bow.

Haven't seen anyone talk about items I have found on one of my leases so here goes. Back about 39 years ago when I first joined the lease I scouted every inch of that 5500 acres. I found old abandoned trucks, an old bus that the logging company used to carry the woods workers to and from, sawed off tree trunks about waist high with a slot cut down th middle for about 6 inches. The log cutters or flat heads as they were called back then used them to put their cross cut saws in and sharpen them. One was almost petrified and was still useable. The most interesting items I found were old hacked up 55 gallon barrels and I thought this was strange out in the middle of th woods. I found them in several different places. Well one day I happened to mention those barrels to an old geazer that owned and lived on an adjoining piece of property. I was totaly at awe when he said they were remanants of whisky stills that had been destroyed by as he put it those dang lawmen. Belive me I was hooked on those stories he had to tell and stopped by his place almost every week to listen to his tales. At one point he told me if I would go to where a certain bridge crossed th CC road and walk up th creek about two bends I would find a piece of pipe sticking out that, that was one of his stills that those dang lawmen never found. Well I found that piece of pipe one day and it was almost rusted completly away.
Later as I would tell him where I had found a set of drums he would say yep that was old so and so he lived on such and such bend or place. As it turned out every drum I found was close in relation to where someone lived and there was a water source near by. The old geizer was later wrote about in a book about th Neches river whisky makers. I had a copy of that book but loaned it to someone and can;t remember who.

South Texas East of Encinal several years ago found wet back camp, they had gone in our hunting shack and stole food only, found the crisco can and flour sack, empty bean cans and where they built a small fire.
In New Mexico several arrow heads will post picture later, one is embedded in a joint bone, another is a long knife or spear point. Walked up on an old ranch house in the mountains west of Carlsbad, Nm. in the early 60s. Looked like they just gathered their clothes and left, everything else was still there. Even had an old wind charger and all of the old glass batteries. I would like to have some of those things now.

This past weekend I was turkey hunting 20 miles east of Goliad. I came upon a swampy area of about 2-3 acres. What I thought at first glance were several moccasins sunning themselves on a culvert passing under the road that split the marshland turned out to be six baby alligators, each about a foot long.

Of course you know what happened next. I took a long slow careful look around myself to make sure momma wasn't nearby. Once I knew I was safe, I was able get a few feet from them as they jumped into the shallow water near the edge of the swamp. That's my additions to "unusual things found while hunting".

Back in the mid '70s, I was hunting on my grandfather's ranch southwest of Falfurrias in Brooks County. I was walking along a fenceline to my brush blind when I stepped on an old rusted trap. The kind that clamps on an animals leg. Thankfully, it was so old and rusted that it didn't have hardly any spring left and didn't hurt, but it scared the crap out of me, I thought it was a snake that had bit me. Nowadays all I find are wetback camps full of plastic jugs, discarded clothing, and old backpacks. Did hear about a guy in Encino in southern Brooks County that looked through some old backpacks and found $4000 in an old sock. I could only be so lucky!

For me, not much but some arrowheads, old marbles and found some bitters bottle ( Prickley Ash ) but I was looking for the bottles so it wasn't a surprize. Used to hunt for old bottles alot. Dug in Wills Point, Terrell, Celina and walked deep, dry creekbeds around Kemp and Kaufman.

A couple of years ago on a lease just outside of Big Sandy I was leaving the property and saw a strange set of bones. Took a closer look and it was foot bones. Went to the Police station, woke up the guy and he got all excited. Even though it was out side the city limits it was still something to do. He called in the County and they did a search of the area and found nothing else.
The scary part is they took them to the local doctor and he said it had to be monkey bones. They took them to the vet and he said they were deffinatly human and here is why.
If you are ever Big Sandy and need medical treatment I would go to the vet.

The other weird thing on the property was a metal barrel that was up about 70' in a tree. No one knows how it got there.

Many years ago, as a child, found a lot of busted up stills in west Tennessee. Walked up on one that was operational. Got out of there fast. Couldn't run fast enough.

i found a half sunk skeeter in a really large pond i used to fish. i got closer and the boat had been trashed and the engine was gone.

The oddest thing was an ironing board. It was on the side of a mountain in Alaska. There were no roads. Who would strap an ironing board to there backpack and why?
On I deer lease I found two washouts. One had hundreds of old whiskey bottles. One had hundreds of the old tin beer cans that you opened with a church key. There was one real cool bottle that didn't have threads (corked). I took it back to the trail and laid it in the the middle so I wouldn't forget it on my way back. When I got back cows had went down the trail and broke it.

I have never found anything worth talking about but my dad found his best friend past away in a tree stand when I was young. I had to help him out of the woods. Here is to you Mr. Exton

Most unusual thing I found last year was cow bones. We haven't had cattle on our land in 20 years and all the gates have cattle guards.

It was pretty weird.

This year all but one pond dried up and we discovered cow bones at the bottom of one of our ponds, Lord knows how long it sat there rotting.

I hunted a wheat field on time setting behind a tree 20 yrs ago and keep seeing to odd shapes through some brush about 10 yards to my left in the dark. Come daylight they were tombstones of a mother and son. Mother was born in 1848 and died 1881 or so. The son died a few yrs earlier and was only 8 yrs old. His was turned over so I set it upright. A very odd moment in the middle of nowhere. Turns out that family had owned the land in those days.

Used to lease the Rhodes Ranch in Taylor County. Climbed up to a crop of rocks on the tallest hill, and found where someone in 1908 had carved their name and where they were coming from and going to. I wished I remembered exactly what it said. On the same place we found an old indian cave, or at least what we thought. Had a few drawings on the walls and some really old pelts. As I'm typing these I'm thinking of more on the same place. Found a draw once where someone had built a wall of rocks and mortared them. They had built maybe a swimming pool? Still held water and was about six feet deep at the wall. This was on about a 20 degree incline. Wished I new the stories that went along with these places.

Found a sink hole once just outside of Georgetown. My Nephew climbed down into it because he was the one...uh...brave enough to get in. At the bottom was an old pile of rotting bones and a stack of rocks where someone had piled them up attempting to get out. The rock pile wasn't enought to get out so we threw a rope down to him and pulled him out. I think that land is a neighborhood of new homes now. Might even be in the City limits by now.

His 5 year old Son was with us. We all made sure he understood that he wasn't supposed to say a word to Mommy about the deal. When we got home, the first words out of his mouth were "Guess what Daddy did?". Then we ALL got in trouble.

Checking cattle in Jack County years ago and something on the side of a hill caught my eye. Turned out to be 2x3 foot section of an airplane. Gave it to a local pilot who passed it upstream, etc. Nothing in the FAA records. A mystery.

Lots of oil activity on the Calllahan County ranch in the 20's and 30's. Bottles and other artifacts scattered all around. An old county road once crossed the place. In one draw, most of an old truck body lies buried in the weeds. Frame and engine gone with only the outer shell left. Would be an interesting story to know what happened.

I have found old graveyards dating back to the 1800s up around paris,canister shot near bastrop,my brother found a 10 cannon ball in georgia, lots of old training shells a few grenades and yesterday a 40mm grenade (uxo)

the coolest thing i ever found was a fossilized human foot print up in the ozarks on a cliff overlooking the river

Found a lawnchair nailed about 20ft up in a tree...best i could figure it was a trap set for dumb people...foud 13 stolen cars also right down the river from there..

also had a Meth headed tweeker walk up on us while were runnin a yote call...and i mean tha volume was up loud...he was on a mission to the crack house down the road no lie...i will never forget how bad the spotlight scared him haha he got about 15yrds before we shined it right on him hahahahaha it was like watchin a deer run off from a light

i have found shed antlers in tractor tires, (haha) but like most the normal stuff, old tin cans and such, shed antlers, bones and hides of deer and other animals that make you wonder how they got where they are, but the neatest thing i can remember off hand was an old model T looking car off in some thick woods outside of Kerrville on year. It had obviously been there for YEARS, the closest road was a good 8+ miles....who knows but really cool

also came across a half burried fawn underneath some leaves and brush, had a couple of good sized teeth and claw marks, coudlnt have been no more than a day old. sure make you look behind you in the woods especially in the dark

I found a meteorite on the shores of Lake Buchanan four or so years ago when it was 20 feet low due to the drought. It has the weight of a cannon ball but is an oval shaped sphere so it isn't the right shape to be a projectile. I found several "dram" bottles that year that are old enough not to have been made by machine.

I found a musket ball in my backyard in Galveston while turning over the veggie garden.

Most recently, I found a really old Berry Brothers and Rudd bottle sunk into the swamp in the Galveston bird sanctuary. When I cleaned it up, you could see the label in the glass of "Berry Bros. & Rudd Ltd." and made in "London, England". It is old enough to also not have the lines on the bottom rim, so it is not machine made either.

A friend does a lot of construction for Sun City in Georgetown and constantly finds arrow heads and the occasional burial cave. His employers get angry when he finds the caves because work stops while the archeologists come.

About 25 years ago while going to college at Univ. of Idaho I worked a couple of summers for the forest service mapping streams. GPS had just become mainstream and we would literally walk up or alongside streams throughout ID and MT taking readings and identifying different riparian habitats. We would actually take along a mask and snorkel and try to survey species of fish at specific intervals. Anyway, it was remote and we were usually helicoptered in and would backpack for a couple of weeks to a rendezvous point.

We found cars/trucks miles and miles from any roads that must have been brought in for mining operations. Once stumbled upon a horse skeleton with saddle that had apparently fallen from the trail up above the river....looked for a rider but found nothing.

Strangest thing was a complete camp: couple of dome tents, backpacks, cooking equipment, sleeping bags, etc. that had obviously been there for several years....kinda eerie!!

I have to mention how odd it was when we would occassionally encounter other people (only happened a couple of times). Of course you'd be polite and say hi but you and the other party would always be very leary and you could tell they were as uncomfortable as you were and were more interested in just moving on... creepy and tough to explain.

While walking around my hunting "area" near Campbellton, Tx., I found what I believe is a cannon ball. It is the size of a tennis ball and is solid steel. I can think of no logical reason for this item to have been out in the middle of this pasture.

Also, while hunting in the Azle area near Ft. Worth, I found a heavy weight plastic bag full of nudie magazines, "lotion" and women's clothing stuffed up underneath a large fallen tree. Again, no logical reasons for these items to be where they were found EEeewww...

Found a really nice hunting jacket floating in Eagle Mountain Lake. I guessed that it blew out of a duck hunter's boat.

Found a deer skeleton with the skull cap cut out. Found the poacher's pop-up blind, cover scent and scent lure in a large bucket stashed under some brush. Sorry SOB!

Had another poacher borrow my blind one time and the dumb butt left his Trophy Hunter magazine in the blind. The magazine had the subscription label on it with his name and address on it. Gave the magazine to the the Game Warden. Easiest case he ever made...

Two years ago I was going out to evening hunt, walking to my stand turn the corner and there sit two young teenage boys, sons of a guy on the lease, looking at a playboy from the 80s. When they saw me they ran. I had to laugh.

I was hunting trout in Oregon back in 2009 and saw some old dead trees with what appeared to be rope burns in the trunks. There were grooves where it looked like the rope had been wound around the trunk twice and the grooves were blackened. My family and I had just come from learning about how pioneers on the Oregon Trail would attach ropes to their wagons and wrap them around trees to slowly lower their wagons down steeper parts of the trail. It was pretty cool to stumble upon that and actually get to see it first hand.

Couple things I found this year were an old elixir bottle with that thick glass from apparently the 1920s marked "Squibb" across the top. Also found an old delapidated homestead with tons of bricks laying around marked "Whiteselle Cherry Reds" that were made in Corsicana in the early 1900s. Thinking about bringing some home and adding them to my patio.

While out on a piece of land we used to have by Glennrose I found a dinosaur egg. It is a nice complete egg that never hatched. It was just sitting on the ground behind a large boulder completely exposed by erosion. I took it into the Ft. Worth museum of Nat History and they confirmed that it was indeed a dino egg and speculated on what species it was.

I found a dead hog one time that I think was hit by lightning. It was lying on its side and its 2 front hooves were partially melted. The hair was gone off one side of its shoulder and there was a smell of burned hair/char that came from the carcass. There was not another mark on the thing and it appeared to be a healthy mature sowe of about 180-200lbs. We�d had a hell of a storm the night before and that's the only explanation that I could come up with.

In Indiana I found a small meth "lab" that was made out of a 5 gallon cooler with some 2 liter bottles full of reactant in them. I smelled the thing from a ways off and when I saw the cooler didn't mess with it . I called the sheriff and they brought out guys in what looked like hazmat suits that opened it up and took the bottles out of it. In that area the sheriff said they have a large problem with meth and they said that the mini labs like that blow up sometimes! We got a good laugh out of the thing later as we discussed a couple of cases of rabies in raccoons that had occurred right in that area and the consequences of "rabid raccoons on meth"! Now that's a scary thought for a coon hunter with dogs!

Sat morning about 10 miles out of Burnet,in the middle of nowhere, I had a jogger who looked like he was in the middle of the Boston marathon come within 10 yds of my feeder and then within 20 yds of me before he took notice. Apparently he was running in a hill country race and wandered off course.

While deer hunting in Arizona in the Cerbat Mountains I had just shot a mule deer buck that had run over the ridge at the shot.
I rode up to the pass he had been standing in when I shot and tied up my horse to start to sort out the situation. In the mountain saddle there was a small flat sandy spot clear of any brush and sticking out of the ground was what looked like a small piece of pipe. I pulled it up and it was the rusted barrel of an old Colt pistol with just the front half of the frame attatched. I was not in the treasure hunting mindset at the moment but I scratched my fingers in the dirt for just a second and buried next to it was the rear half of the grip frame.
I stuck the pieces in my chap pocket and got after my buck always meaning to get back up there again and dig around some more, never have.
One strange thing about it was while it was so rusted the front sight was almost gone you could see that the barrel was twisted in the frame about 45 degrees.
A friend of mine that was working for us was trailing a bunch of weaner calves that had gotten out of the pens and hightailed it to the Nevada border.
As he was riding down a sandwash following their tracks he rode up on a human skull laying in the sand.
When he got back in that evening we called the sheriffs dept and after taking them back to the area they determined it was woman who had been killed and buried in the sand that the coyotes had dug up.
As it finally turned out it was a woman from Las Vegas who's boyfriend had killed her and brought her over into Az to bury the body.
Apparently the cops had figured he had killed her but there was no proof without the corpse, this was what they needed to convict him.
My father found a dead guy floating in a stock tank, apparently he had committed suicide.
Why he would do it in a flipping stock tank always baffled me, but then he obviously was not thinking straight to begin with so why the heck not?
I have found more indian stuff than I can ever remember, indian writing, metate's, ax heads, bowls,old rimfire bullet I believe for a Spencer, unfired.
Probably the strangest thing however was I found three chinese glass floats for their fishing nets,, in the middle of the mojave desert.. go figger?

first year bow hunting.. got in stand before light, an evening would leave after dark.. it was right at sunset.. hard a sound, eech, thinking it may be a fawn, made sound back, eech, went on till after it got dark kept gettng closer.. next day, sae thing.. eech, was curious ta see what it was, so did it back, eech, it made sound eech, little closer, so again eech, this went on for several minnutes.. sound kept getting closer eech.. all of sudden an owl landed in a tree but ten yards, turned it's head around looked at me, eeech.. the day i talked to the owl..

An full can of Hamm's beer with the old tin top you used a church-key to open. I didn't drink it. They haven't made those since the 60's and this was 10yrs ago.

I found a skeleton of a spike buck with a arrow with a target point imbedded in the skull. I also found two arrows with broadheads, one imbedded in a tree, and a broken one at the bottom of a stream.

As kids squirrel hunting on open land we found an operational whiskey still, luckily the operator was not on scene, we didnt even know what it was until my friends Dad told us and to stay out of those hunting woods in the future.

Found this while hunting at a garage sale. No story to go with it...

My father was hunting hog with grandpa when he was 12 and they came upon a guy tied to a tree with barb wire. He had been killed and tied up to the tree. He had not been there to long, yet the hogs had already done a number on him. Dad said the local law said he was a missing gambler. When they got home grandma had a huge plate of pork chops on the table, they both passed.

I miss the old man, as he passed last Friday. I have been lurking around in here for over a year, first post. Reading this and remembering all of the times we had outside has really helped me know he is at peace. Thank you all.

when I was like 8-9 I was camping in California with my friends and we were walking up a creek bed and we found a car on its roof that had I guess tumbled down the mountainside. there were 3 half decomped people inside and one that was 20 yards down the creek where it looked like she had staggered and fallen, coyotes had tore her up we ran full speed back to the park ranger station who said they had been looking for these people for a week and didn't find them.

Found a ziplock bad full of winning lotto tickets when I was younger. A little over three grand worth. Went to turn them in but they said they have already been cashed in. Guess somebody robbed a store and grabbed them too. Or my buddies mom kept the money.

Not a out in the woods find..but was camping in te Florida Keys and saw a brick laying on the ground all by itself. It had mortar all over it. Also had some inscriptions.....turned out to be a brick Ernest Hemmingway had imported to key west, he made a brick security wall around his property.

I then drove about 30 miles to his museum house now and sure enough, same brick. Also confirmed it on the Internet.

I have found those too.. We had a place years ago near Mertzon, Texas that had one... Took us a few years to figure out what the hill was.. Then two berms in a perfect circle, exactly 100 yards apart. Bullseye for plains!!

Other than that, the weirdest thing I have found was a weather balloon.

I was hunting on the Pope ranch In Brewster county just north of the entrance of Big Bend park in 1966 and was sitting on a side of a mountain. Looked down below at a pile of rocks about 2' tall, checked it out and found a Prince Albert tobacco can,Inside was a piece of paper part in poor English and Spanish. It was a claim for for silver and gold, stated that it was filed in Alpine,I gave it to my Dad and over the years he lost it. I do remember that it was dated in the early 1920's. I would think that it would have been on private land back then.The Popes bought the ranch in the 1930's.Also found a lot of rattle snakes that year.

I have just completed all 3 pages of this and its great. Somebody should publish some of this stuff for like a pot reader. To date the only things i can remember finding are not that weird. We found some old barrels in an net strung together and floated out to an island on Caddo. My father worked at Thiokol army ammunition plant then and said he recognized them as haz mat barrels. he also instructed me to quit fishing in that area. We also used to find miniature parachutes with stuff tied to them hanging from cypress trees that dad said was testing done by Thiokol of some kind. We found them WAY out too like almost all the way into LA side and over past big pines.

Hunting elk in Colorado dad found an old cattle camp and stopped to eat lunch. He found an old whip which I still have and an weird old toy gun that has a bolt and everything but a spring deal poking out of the end of it. I have that as well.

Last season was the 1st year on my new place. its actually quite small compared to other places, only about 300 acres. Anyways, I had already set my stand and feeder along an old fence line early in September, along a creek bed. When I had put up the stand and my feeded the grass was around 3 foot high as it was still quite warm. I would periodically return every 2-3 weeks, check and fill my feeder and pull my card from my game cam, but never noticed anything odd.
Well the day after Thanksgiving I returned to my stand, and spotted a decent 8-point and took the shot, DRT. I get out of my stand, and keep in mind by this time the grass has died and the hogs have made a huge wallow in front of my feeder near where I shot the deer at. As I approach the deer on the ground, I see something metal and cylindrical in shape sticking out of the ground in the mud. I really wasnt too interested in taking a further look at right then, as I was more focues on the deer I just shot. I proceed to tie a rope around the legs to drag back to camp, and as I turn around to start pulling the deer away, I see another metal object sticking out of the ground about 3 feet away. Curiosity finally got the better of me, and I pull the first object out of the ground. It was an old coffee can rusted but still sealed up. I open it up and inside wrapped up in an old newspaper is small ugly looking semi-auto pistil. Closer inspection revealed it to be a .25 auto.
I pulled the other object out of the ground and come to find out it was an old mason type jar, with the lid still sealed as well. I couldnt get the lid off in the field so I ended up taking it back to camp I knew it had something inside, because I could hear it rattling inside. Eventually had to break it open, and inside I found about 30 rounds of old ammo for the pistol, and old fixed blade knife, and old rusted pocket knife wrapped in a bandana that had some sort of old stains on it. I ended up taking the pistol to a local gunsmith who informed me that the pistol was an old German manufactured pistol, made around 1917 or so. He offered me 200.00 bucks for it right there on the spot, but I passed. I ended up giving it to my buddy as a birthday present.
It was one of the ugliest looking pistols I have ever seen in my life.
UPDATE: I called my buddy and it was an old "MANN" .25 automatic pistol. Still functions and fires. The pic below is not the actual pistol but looks almost identical.

In 1995 I was a Lt in the Marines attending The Basic School in Quantico. From time to time on field exercises we would have leftover blank ammo and the instructors would tell us to bury it because they didn't want to mess with turning it back in to the armory. One day we were out on a field exercise and had to dig foxholes in the snow. I started on mine and about a foot down discovered about 6 or 7 M1 garand clips loaded with blanks. They were all rusted up and I ended up leaving them there but had a big laught at how some instructor 40 years earlier had told his students to bury their blanks.

My Dad was hunting the family property when I was a kid and found an old pump 22 laying on the ground in the woods. Turned out to be my grandfather's rifle. he had lost it as a child. He was born in 1916. You can imagine the amount of trouble my grandfather got into for loosing that gun. All the wood was gone, and the gun was/is uselss now. But the story attached to it is priceless.

My uncle, hunting the same property heard some noise one day while hunting. Coming from the creek bed. So he put the sneak on, and it turned out to be a neighbor girl and her boyfriend doing the deed on a big sandbar.

We find old bottles in the creek all the time.

We also find a lot of nice petrified wood too.

I found a bunch of pink and black balloons in the bottoms down there. Floated down from who knows where, no tags on them.

I found the contents of a file cabinet burnt in a small clearing about 3 yrs ago. looked to have been there a couple of years at the time. Hanging file racks and related items, along with a pretty good pile of ashes. That still is a head-scratcher. No-one admits to it.

My best find yet?

We were rattle snake hunting SE of Evant many years ago. We had gassed the den and were waiting on the snakes. I was sitting down taking a drink and my buddy was looking around on the ground. I asked what he was looking for? Arrowheads. I looked down and right beside me on the ground was an arrowhead. First one I'd ever found. My buddy had never found one either. Chapped his hide just a bit, lol.

I've never found anything worth speaking of.

I found a 4 wheeler in the creek once. Looked like they were trying to run the creek and found a deep hole in a bend.

Found a piece of roofing material once near a stand that I had hunted for many years. With not a house anywhere near it and well back in the woods on timber company land, I feel safe saying it came from a twister that passed through the area the week before.

I haven't looked back through all the previous posts, but did anyone report having found a piece of the Space Shuttle that broke apart over East Texas?

My son and I were scouting after the season when we found something really strange. Looked over and there was a fox that had gotten himself stuck about 3-4 feet off the ground in the Y of the trunk of a tree and a branch. He must have tried getting out so violently that I think he broke his spine. Very strange and something I will never see again.

I had this great 8 point on my camera last year that I was looking forward to bagging. He dissapeared a few days before opening day. Week into the season I found signs of poachers and started walking the property. Found the deer and he had been shot and either lost or just left.

Two things. One I found and one my B-i-L found. My find was an old arrow stuck in a tree at about head height. That was back in the late 1960's. We were on family land and nobody we knew had ever bow hunted. The arrow had been there for a very long time and had drooped downward as the wooden shaft slowly succumbed to the weather. It had a metal broadhead of a design that none of us or any of the local bowhunters had ever seen. I think I still have the arrow. As for the BIL, he lost his binocs one year (or so he says) and he replaced them with some really high dollar Swarovski binocs. The next season he was riding his 4wheeler through our hunting area and (he says) a glint of light caught his eye and there were his old binocs. Still in fine shape. Hmmmm. I never really believed his story about the accidental loss. His Swarovski glass is really nice.

I don't even know where to start. I have found lots of very old glass bottles, arrows, and arrowheads like others. Old duck decoys, old shoes/waders, I found a dead cat stuck in the fork of a tree one time that I will withhold photographic evidence of. This old boat has been sitting in my farm bottoms for who knows how long, even when it floods it doesn't wash it away.

I have found 200+ 50 cal. brass as well as 200+ 223 blanks, and some razor wire. I should mention that the place I hunt backs up to Fort Hood near Gatesville. The best find was a deer tracking collar and when I called about it I was accused of poaching because it was off of a doe that was tagged near lake Belton and the distance was too far for the deer to travel. I was a little mad about how the girl running the study was acting but I know it was not poached and where I found it was the very middle of our place. It would not have been dropped by anybody other than the deer.

Oh yeah, also found this blind half submerged in a river.

I was squirrel hunting on a creek by my house when I was a kid and found an old pair of gold rim spectacles ( reading glasses)

While hunting on Black Gap WMA, a friend of mine stumbled over an old tobacco tin. When he opened it, there was a treasure map in it. (i need to ask him what he did with it).

The map was very fragile and difficult to read.

We also found arrowheds and Indian Metates (sp?) that were used to crush seeds.

We were riding along with a deputy sheriff while quail hunting along the Rio Bravo once when we spotted some large stones and a stick pointing to the river. The deputy thought it was a sign that Mexican drug runners had been through there but I was skepitical. Five minutes later, we ran across a family camping. They said that they put the stick and rocks down to mark their trot lines. The deputy was a little embarrased.

I lost my hub cap cover to my lugs for my truck about 3 years ago, did not have a clue where I had lost it?
This spring I was walking close to the feeder where I had walked 100 of times since, and there the darn thing was still looked good! It was about 20 yards away in some low grass bigger than Day Light?? I have since lost that same one again

I went by to visit with my cousin on a trip back to Arkansas and he said that he had found something he wanted to give me. He had bought several loads of top soil for the lawn of his new house and while he was spreading it, out rolled a large cannon ball. The dirt had come from a pit in the Saline River bottoms just north of where I-30 crosses the river near Benton. It now sits on the hearth of my fireplace and has been the subject of much speculation over the years.

AN old 1930's era car deep in the woods. Alwys wondered how that car could have gotten so far out there. You can barely get a 4-Wheeler in there now...

Old US Army fort dump site, in a ravine that I chased a muley out of. Forgot about the deer and started looking around - old canteen with a blue rattlesnake in it.

I found an old Claw Foot bath tub, back in the woods on my uncle's farm. Brought it home, had it redone, and installed it. About a month later my ex moved out and took the tub. Sure did miss that tub!

Not hunting, but when i was 14-15 I was cutting a creek crossing with a D6 and dug through some rib bones maybe 10 feet deep, which led to a buffalo skull. I tried really hard to keep the skull but my dad found it and gave it to Midwestern Univ. in Wichita Falls.

Hunting, found a skeleton of a coon hound in the same creek that still had a collar with a name plate.

Hunting, found a neighbor who'd had an apparent heart attack.

We had a big old cottonwood tree with a large prickly pear cactus in the crotch of the tree, 50 feet or more off the ground. Probably a packrat nest started it.

This old car is in a grove of live oaks at our place, appears to be a 37' Chevy. The car is much older than the trees around it. I'm pretty sure somebody used it as a deer blind for a while; it's blocked and leveled. Now-adays it's more of a raccoon love shack.

The best thing I have ever found out in the wild on ahunt is seven old glass bottles of whiskey. I dont drink, but my uncle said it packed one heck of a punch. I thought it would have killed him.... Oh well. I have also found an old metal tractor tire in a creek between two mountains where a tractor had no business being

Found several old pint liquor bottles under a fallen-down log cabin in New Mexico. Some quick research revealed they were from the 1940s. Tried to clean them up but 80 year old pine sap is hard to get out.

Found an old Schlitz can on a dried up portion of the lake at San Angelo state park, copyright date was 1976. It was 2001.

Like some on here, the strangest was a dead body.
Had climbed into my treestand during the second weekend of deer season (well before sunrise). Was about a mile from the nearest road. When sun came up, saw a person sitting next to a tree about 75 yards to my left (on other side of a fence and small creek). As the morning went on never saw him move. Shot a deer about 11AM- still no movement. Went to get my deer, but decided to check the person. DEAD!!! Called the sheriff. He and coroner came out. Said guy had been dead over 24 hours. Found out later guy was 71 years old, family said he left to go deer hunting the past Thursday, and probably had a heart attack.

Several boats have been found at my buddies place after the creek floods. His grandfather in law also found a crashed plane out there with two dead guys in it and bales of weed scattered around it.

A few dead body's in the oak bottoms, arrowheads gallor, used to catch wets everywhere, there are a big ceremonial place on top the tallest mountain of or ranch in the Chinati mountains with one 10ft+ long rock positioned straight up with smoke stains and a big ring of boulders around it. My Nieghbor found a dead Indian in a cave with all the old clothing beads ect. In a cave on the side of a mountain and recovered it, bought a coffin and it's in his living room with a full body mt. Lion on top. The state tried to buy it from it and he refused

Well not while hunting but we were doing some dozer work on one of my dads places that we had heard had an old fort or something on it back when there were indians running around. We found an old revolver on the place that was so rusted all you could see was a barrel cylinder and you could tell the hammer was cocked. The fact that the hammer was cocked leads me to believe it has a pretty interesting story.

Sorry, gotta throw the big red BS flag on that one. Especially since that would be illegal and the state wouldn't ask to buy it. They'd just confiscate it.

Not sure if this is related but my ex mother in law is from denton near the OK border. She used to tell me stories about when she was a kid her family was very poor and the government had given them a railroad car to live in. It had no plumbing no walls or any amenities but they lived in it for several years. Strange coincidence or maybe thats what you stumbled on.

Well I've never really found anything unusual except for old bottles, arrowheads, etc but about 10 years ago we were hog dog hunting in Anahuac. We had a 1 1/2 year old black mouth cur that didn't seem really all there but we kept him around because he had a heck of a nose on him. He was so dumb that all we ever named him was Dog. When we got done hunting all the other dogs came in when we called except for this one. We waited and hollered but he never showed. We assumed a gator had gotten him. That was common in that area. About a year later, we got a call from an old rancher about a mile from where we were hunting asking if we'd lost a dog. Completely forgetting about Dog my dad told him no. The old man explained that a cur dog had wandered up to his property and had our number on his collar. It had taken a couple of months for him to get the dog to come to him because he was so skittish but he was fat and healthy. We told the rancher he was welcome to keep him if he wanted to and as far as I know, Dog lived out his life with that old guy. Funny to think that old dumb dog survived in hog and alligator infested swamp for over a year.

Thats exactly right. My wife found an Indian Skull (and other various parts) when my dads shop was being excavated. Some goody too shoes found out, called the sheriff, who came out, took possesion of everything, the county then placed the remains nearby at the request of some Indian authority.

No one bought anything, no one asked. . . they simply DID. . .

While hunting with the family we have found numerous Indian arrow heads, spear heads, and other tools.

While hunting at work I have seen: 1000's of illegal aliens, 10's of thousands of pounds of marijuana, maybe a hundred pounds of coke, guns, knives, ID cards, wallets chocked full of money, crashed cars, burglarized hunting cabins, mutilated calves and deer, poachers (yes in the act, yes I arrested them. . . no they werent happy), saved a couple of lives, had a helicopted pin people down while I rode in like the cavalry on my ATV, raided hotel rooms / houses. . . and a couple antler sheds.

Saw one of these while hunting NF outside Broken Bow in the '70s. It looked like someone's residence, and we detoured well around it. "Deliverance" was still a recent release.

Hunting I have found a few arrowheads, a couple of knives, and an ammo can that had a couple of boxes of shotgun shells and a knife in it (prolly bounced out of someones truck).

Not hunting, but just exploring and poking around old mines, I found a really cool compound gear winch that was really old (probably hooked to an engine of some kind, but the engine was not there). Old mine car tracks (but no cars), big open top metal tanks presuably for ore processing, and a huge old rock drill bit permanently embedded in a piece of rock.

That thing was like excalibur! It was in the bottom of a mine and I went back three or four times with various hamers and rock chisels to try and get it, but I could never budge it!

Dead bodies? Time for a new lease.

As a kid my grandfather took me at about 7 yrs old. As a teenager, was on a hunt with him in Westhoff Tx. He walked me thru an area where a naval jet (prob from Chase Filed in Beeville) had crashed many years ago..There were still metal remnants on the ground..It always seemed 10 deg cooler there where it had crashed.. Oh yeah...he hunted til 92 yrs old..Killed his best buck last year he hunted..

Sorry I just checked back in on this thread. He found the Indian in the late 80's on their 200,000 acre+ family ranch in presidio county. If you've ever lived in far west Texas you would believe it. The Family is one of the oldest and largest ranching families in West Texas I'm sure the have plenty of friends in high places.

Years ago I was walking a property in SE OK with the land owner. He showed me an old 55 gallon drum up in the woods. It had ax marks in it from Prohibition days. Part of an old still.

I found a full case of extremely old dinamite that was swetting like crazy in an old abandoned barn. Told the landowner and he did not know about it and he had owned the property ten years. Called the closest military base and they sent a demolition team to get and despose of it.

The most memorible find of mine was on a fishing trip at a family lakehouse.

I was standing on the dock one night fishing and got a decent bite. Reeling the guy in I thought it would be a big one. Turned out it was a smaller catfish weaving his way around the armrest of a really fancy chair at the bottom of the lake. We cleaned the chair off and left it on the dock as a place to sit while fishing.

It was probably close to 20 years ago and me and a buddy were scouting type II land out in east Texas. We had hunted public land before so we knew we had to get as deep in as possible. So we were pretty deep in the woods and we came across 2 or 3 different colored wires hanging from a really tall pine. As best as we could tell, there was a small grey box attached to them way up in that tree. We both pulled and pulled on those wires trying to get whatever was up there down. No luck. While messing with the wires we saw that they were long enough for the other end to be under the dirt/leaves that were on the ground. We pulled that wire up for I don't know how many yards and never got to the end. It drives me crazy to this day not knowing what that was and how it got there. Did it fall from the sky? Start out at ground level and just grow with the tree? Oh, this was years before the space shuttle accident.

While hunting snakes years ago up on the border, I found a live hand grenade right after a rain. Told the land owner he said he had to call Camp Seal in OK and have someone come down and destroy it. Come to find out the area I was walking across was an old POW camp during WW 2 and the military dug a hole and dump all kinds of live ord in it. He ask me not to go it the pasture. He also ask me never tell any one where the pasture is.

Found a teddy bear, women's high heeled shoes and a moonshine shack on our property that sets in a deep thicket way off the the freeway

Last year, during the drought, my son tripped over a rock that was on a trail to the "kids blind"...60yrds from the feeder.

Anyway, that rock was actually an old ax head that you can tell was hand forged. I kept it and have never seen another like it.

I've got nothing, maybe a few sheds that's it.

My FIL found an old Indian bowl made out of stone and the grinder that sat in the bowl about 15 years ago while hunting.

When I was a kid in Arkansas, my brother and I explored every chance we could. We found an old cemetary in the middle of the woods (probably 2 miles from the nearest road) while deer hunting, an old well with stone walls, a pot field, complete really old stone standing fireplace with no building whatsoever.

Know someone who owns some land on a lake. Last year during the drought found some copper wire in the ground about 20 yards out into where the lake shoudl've been No telling how long it is or what its attatched to, but they hooked it up to the jeep and pulled for about 30 yards and then it just stuck and wouldnt come up.

I just read through 45 pages and now dont know what to do with myself. Our old property had a model T with a giant oak growing through the middle of it, my best friends mom has a picture of it in her house. We have an old cemetary down the road from our ranch now, used to take girls out there on the gator in high school . Havent really found anything cool hunting, just a bleached out cow skull while pheasant hunting and carried the stupid thing all day. Its hanging in my workshop now.

I didn't find this, my grandfather did, He wasn't hunting but going to work. He used to work as a ranch hand at a ranch between Yancey and Moore Tx and when getting to work early one morning right at the gate enterance to the ranch he and another ranch hand found the body of a woman who had been murdered. I don't know if they ever found the killer as my grandfather never really spoke often of this, I only found out later when my father had told me about it.

When I was a kid (9 or 10 - 1967 or 1968) I found some old musket balls, buttons, and an old buckle in the banks of Coleto Creek around Victoria Tx. That area is now underwater. Granny sold all of it in a garage sale while I was in the Navy. I didn't even get the two bucks she probably got for it.

Out in the smack middle of nowhere on my 300 acre lease I found a new-looking car key. It was blue and blank - as in it had never been cut to fit a specific ignition. It was laying on the ground, no corrosion or dirt or anything, way off the beaten path. I've got to wonder if it fell from an airplane.???

Stumbled across a crosscut saw that had grown into two trees once in michigan. It was about 3 feet off the ground and the trees had completely grown around it. It was pulled so tight you could sit on it and it made a neat sound if you tapped it with a cartridge

This one time at Deer Camp.... I got up one morning, walked into the woods and actually saw a deer! Damnedest thing I'd ever seen! LoL.

A few years the wife & I took a cruise trip to Mexico. I went on the excursion to see some Aztec ruins. I was walking away from the guide poking in the odd places & found a ..... cell phone. yes it worked.

My dad was fishing on the Wichita river pbly 30-40 yrs ago & found an old revolver hanging in a tree. it is all rusted but is real cool. The barrel hinges up & you can take out the cylinder. It also has silver diamonds inlayed on each side of the octogon barrel & a silver thing on the side plate with an old indian spear thing engraved on it.

I did take the pistol to a gun show years ago in Wichita Falls. They all wanted to buy it but couldnt price it. The silver on the lock plate has like a zigzag etch around it. with the staff thing in the center. the staff has feathers hanging from the top. there are 3 diamonds on each side of the barrel o & the opposite side of the lock plate is missing. Real cool. I guessed it is about a .32 or .36 caliber.

The 2 places I hunt are notorious for having trespassers. On our 6000 acres in NW Oklahoma we have found under ground shelters, guns, cars in places that you can only get to by foot and a few of them burned, some traps and poachers deer stands, a nice four wheeler, and a ton of house hold items I assume we're from the tornadoes.

On our lease in East Texas we have found our boat, picnic table, grill, chairs, and the SOB that took all of it to his makeshift fort in the bottoms. He was arrested by local authorities, after almost being shot by us while pig hinting at night. The sound he made coming through the swamp and trees damn near made me piss my pants. One of the small ponds went dry a few years ago and we found a roof, a pretty large roof. Only saw about 1 foot of what I guess is a wall. We can back 4 weeks later with an excavator but the pond had refilled. Nobody around here knows anything about it, it's now under 15 feet of water.

I found a 10-speed bicycle, with an empty backpack hanging from the seat, leaning up against a tree. I was trailing a wounded boar and found it a full quarter mile from the road, in river bottom so thick was I was practically crawling. It looked like it had been there for several years...rubber rotted out on the tires, seat had come apart, and the chain rusted solid.

This was well above the flood line, so it was not carried down the river. No way it was ridden there; the trees and underbrush were so thick that it took me over half an hour to drag it to a place I could get the 4X4 to.

found a rusty 1938 Texas farm truck license plate,
found a really long handle landing net covered by flood debris in the san gabriel river bottoms
an old hatchet head that was cracked and the blade looks like it was used to bust rocks

also forgot that I found an john boat on public land in NE Anderson County while bowhunting, just left it where it was, no way to get a truck in there and figured it had washed down a creek and wound up half covered in mud in a field. had no tx numbers, but mfg serial number still in place.

In the mid 80's an outfitter and I found a brand new active geyser a few files West of Cody, WY toward Yellowstone. We were sheep hunting and if we had been a few yards to either side of the lookout we were at, we would not have seen it. It blew about 30 feet in the air every 90 seconds and had apparently just started because the ground around it still had green grass and none of the mineral deposits the geysers all have. We went to the USGS on the west end of Cody and ask if there was any thermal activity outside Yellowstone Park toward Cody at that time and they said "definitely NOT". We figured they knew what they were talking about so we didn't tell them where it was.

Coming off the mountain from elk hunting one evening in WY, found a horse on the trail with saddle, scabbard, rifle, everything but the rider. We figured the rider had gotten off for a nature call and didn't tie the horse and it decided to head back to the trailhead. We tied him on the trail figuring that the now "foot soldier" was further up the trail and would pass by the horse on his way down.
Also found a new scoped rifle on Muddy Mountain south of Casper, WY while mulie hunting. We put it a bit out of sight since it was lying on a rock by the trail for anyone to see that came by. A few miles down the trail, found three young teens having more fun than hunting. They said one of them dropped the rifle and filled the barrel with snow/mud and it was too heavy to carry when they couldn't shoot it. They were going to pick it back up on the way out. Smart, Huh?

Found a game warden's wallet and hunting license on the trail in the Sunlight Basin outside Cody, WY. I left it at a game warden game check station and let them know that he was up there hunting without a license. Everybody got a good laugh over that. Found another wallet in the muddy Deer Creek Trail on the South Fork out of Cody. Called the guy when we got out from hunting. He thought he would never see the money or cards again.

Found a silver dollar while hunting with about 3 miles South of Goldthwaite in the early 1950's. It was in the caliche lying there like it was just waiting for me to pick it up. Still have it.

Found a 1924 penny in the dirt road, no telling how long it had been there before it finally surfaced.

I have found some old, old bottles of 'bitters' out in woods and the fields around where I hunt. There is also a house site that had a log cabin (now gone) and a root cellar. Lots of weird stuff around there.

Arrowheads, too; we find those once in a while.

Found a Browning Woodsman 22 pistol in a pistol rug on a trail about 15 miles from the trailhead. Found out later the game wardens had been after some drunk "hunters" in that drainage who were drunk and riding up and down the trail like in the old westerns and shooting a pistol off their horses at anything that would get their attention; including toward other hunters.

Found an old wad of leather with a brand "US" on it and it appeared to be an old bino case. There were about a dozen 45-70 or 45-90 cases with it. A friend in Cody wanted them and I don't remember the exact caliber the cases were.

I found 2 foothold traps with a mesquite tree growing through the jaws. One of the traps was last manufactured in 1903.

Very cool thread. Where I dove hunt there's a "pauper's" cemetery right at the gate. I was driving by one morning about 20 years ago and a recently buried person had been exhumed, piece by piece, by possums. I went to HS with the local funeral director who managed the plot at the time and told him he had some re-burying to do.

Found an old iron hatchet head right in front of my deer stand about 20 years ago. It's still in a drawer in the old camper out there as far as I know.

Season before last I found a brand new Weatherby Vanguard in .300WM with a Leupold scope, in a soft case, in the middle of my property. I turned it in to the Sheriff who contacted TP&W. It's still in the posession of the Sheriff's office, I guess. In hind-sight, I wish I'd removed that Leupold before turning it in.

When I was a kid, about 40 years ago, dove hunting behind the house in a freshly plowed field, I found a Boker/Tree Brand three-blade pocket knife that was old and rusty. I cleaned it up and still use it. It's in the glove-box of my truck right now.

A friend of my family bought a patch of grown-up land and while clearing it found a small Civil War cemetery, about a dozen graves. He chain-link fenced it in, leveled all the head-stones, and maintains it nicely to this day.

Catfishing on the Brazos on a friend's place just north of Highbank and south of the Falls crossing one night in about '83. I'd scaled down the bluff about 8 feet and there was a real nice plank jutting out, made a nice seat. I sat there and caught fish all night. In the morning light I realized it was the foot of a coffin. Turns out there was actually a settlement there years ago and as the bank erodes away, and the river "moves," things get un-covered.

Posted this in the creepy stuff thread a few years ago, but will post again here, cause its creepy and unusual.

About 20 years ago, in Huffman, TX, there was a pond about 10' deep and 150' in diameter. It had dried up one really dry summer and us kids were in the muddy bottom catching crawdads. The pond was full of stuff that had been dumped over the years- washers, dryers, general garbage.

We were moving the junk to get crawdads and found a complete, uncut cast from an arm. It was an L shape, like would go over
an elbow, and there would be no way to slip an arm out of it without it being cut. We didn't think much of it at the time, but years later I wonder if there could have been a body in there.

I guess it could have been a model from some kind of med school, who knows. Not a lot of med students in Huffman, I would guess. The pond was filled in about 10 years ago.

Another time during a drought, I was fishing/exploring little dried up ponds and coves on the banks of the East San Jac river.

Found an big, old oil well drill bit in the mud. It was very heavy, so I left it there. I still wanna go back and try to remember where it was and get it. It would look pretty cool cleaned up as decor for my shop.

Friend of mine bought a 1000 acre ranch next to their current one to increase their land holdings. It has a grave marker on in with a child, man, and lady buried there from the 50's to the 80's. I took a picture of it. This past November I was at a family event and showed the picture to our family friends with the same last name. It was was the guys uncle! His grandad bought it in the early 1900s. He grew up spending summers on the ranch and hunting it. We all live in Dallas and this ranch is 90 miles away. Small world and I happened to be going their the next day after discovering this. We got a hog and deer right by the site.

Another grave story. I lease in Montague county and my wife is from the Panhandle. Her great great grandad is buried 5 miles from my lease in Montague! He had a 1400 acre ranch there from 1870 to 1902 no one really knew about. 8 or 9 family members are buried in a cemetery there. My daughters name is their last name. In doing research you can find some interesting things. From the Bowie newspaper, One morning he found two horses gutted around 1885.

Found one of the old claw footed bathtubs at just below 11,000 feet elevation on Ptarmigan Mtn in Wyoming. Also found one of the old queen ? wood cook stoves in a camp in the same general area. Only way into this area is miles and miles by horseback on a really rough trail. The cook stove was obviously being used occasionally and was in an outfitter's camp that was abandoned until the hunting season. The story was that the outfitter used glue factory bound horses with the stove loaded on one of them and packed it until the horse crashed. They would then use the horse for bear bait and loaded the stove on another until it couldn't go any longer and it then became bear bait. Never heard anything about why the bath tub would be there but it was pretty cool. We all took turns sitting in it and taking our pic on the highest mountain top in the area in an old claw footed bath tub.

A very important person must have been hunting there!

Never found a dead body or anything but a couple things come to mind.

When I was younger, I would go stay with my sister in Andrews during the summer. My BIL worked as a well pumper and I would ride with him. He had a well right next to the Wink Sink. Crazy story goes with that as well. Anyway, we would hunt for arrow heads near Monahans. Usually about once a week because the wind would blow the sand around and uncover more heads. Found a few arrow heads and what we think is a flint skinning knife. Fits in the palm of your hand and has been worked on one side only. I also walked up on a full grinding stone with the rock right next to it. Way cool! I brushed back the sand with my hands and when I picked it up, it just crumbled to pieces. Wasn't meant to be but I did keep the grinding stone.

This was by far the weirdest thing i ever found. Still kind of makes the hair on the back of neck stand up.

About 25 yrs ago, I was out hunting with a buddy of mine at my grandmothers farm near Lockney. We were about 10 or so and my dad would let me take the pickup hunting. Back then, you could pretty much hunt any where you wanted. If someone came up, you just mentioned your name and everything was good because they knew your family. Anyway, we found an old house somewhere between there any Quitique. I had seen numerous old houses with these concrete water tanks next to them. All of them I had seen before, the walls were broken and had fallen down. All but this one. It was different than all of the others I have seen before. The walls were about 5" tall and still standing. We pulled ourselves up and saw the weirdest thing. There were thousands and thousands of bones. The bottom was completely white with bones. This tank was dugout from the inside so it was about 7ft down to the bottom. Numerous animals had fallen in and not able to get back out OR someone was throwing carcases in there. No telling how many years this had been going on. There were a few complete skeletons but mostly scattered bones. I could identify some by the skulls. Mostly rats and coons, However, there were a couple of yotes or strays. My guess is they hurt themselves falling or could not get a running start for a jump because of the amount of bones in the bottom.

Another time, we found a water well next to a house near Paducah. Threw a rock in and it was a good 7 seconds before it hit water. I guess at least 100 ft or so. Always thought, be a good spot to get rid of "something".

Rock falls at 32 fps per second so it would have to be well over 250 feet deep for a 7 second drop.

Place next door to where I grew up had an old "above ground Indian well" that's what my dad called it. It wasn't 7seconds foe a rock to hit bottom. It was about 3 seconds until the hole came alive with very annoyed rattlesnakes. Stl gives me the Willy's.

Air drops are calculated on this formula and it would be hard for anything dropped from 10k to 30k feet above the earth as being in a vacuum. When a skydiver freefalls, in a few seconds they fall about 1000 ft every 5.5 seconds. Do the math, this isn't in a vacuum. Terminal velocity is 32 fps per second. The reason for the increasing speed is that the mass must overcome whatever wind resistance there is - hence no vacuum.

My family has a ranch in the Delaware Mountains in far West Texas. There is a rim that runs along the western fence line. I was always told not to walk down it too far because with the usual 40+ mph winds it was a pain to walk back up. Well one day I said screw it I'm going down it. I get about half way down and find a small prop aircraft had crashed into a face of rim rock. It had been there for a while because the ground was charred black. There were pieces of the controls and engine all over the place. Nothing in the cockpit was recognizable. The game warden assumed it was a drug plane from Mexico.

In the early 60's, my grandparents bought a place on the Llano river north of Junction, Texas. On one of the bends in the river, there were some rapids and we were sitting in the water and fishing in the pool below the rapids. The fishing was slow and the day was hot, so we got to moving gravel and rocks in the water and came upon a solid bleached out horn that looked like it came from a cow. We kept digging and ended up digging out the skull of a buffalo that was missing the bottom jaw. The skull was bleached out and white like it had laid in the sun for a long time before it ended up in the river. At the time, there were no exotic animal ranches in the Hill Country that might have raised buffalo, so I wonder how a buffalo ended up in the Hill Country during that time.

Me and my brother found a pink 3ft teddy bear hanging from a tree near a very old barn. Newspapers had 1956 on them. It was really creepy because from the distance we first saw it we couldn't tell what it was. We ct it down so it wouldn't freak anybody else out.

Terminal velocity is not 32 fps. For some objects maybe but, not all. Objects ACCELERATE at 32 fps with out any resitance due to gravity. Meaning, in a "vacuum", their velocity will increase by 32 feet every second they fall. Wind resistance slows down acceleration to a point that the object is no longer accelerating. Terminal velocity is reached when the object is no longer accelerating and its speed remains constant.

I found a cistern in a corn field. I ended up at the bottom of it about 12 feet deep. Good thing I wasn't hunting alone or I would still be there. There was an old farm there at one time.

Back in the late 90s my wife and I were leaving our lease in Kent cty. On the salt fork. We decided to leave after the morning hunt. There was an old, abandoned 2 story Victorian mansion that could be seen from the cty road. We had seen it many times but always at a distance. This particular afternoon we decided to find a different route to go home. After what seemed like an hour or so, we took a turn down a dirt road that led us right to the front of the mansion, it was creepy. My wife stayed in the truck while I went to investigate. A very wealthy rancher must have owned this house at one time as it had custom beadboard and wallpaper that had to have come from back east. As I made my way up an old creaky stairway I heard someone walking behind me, it was my wife, she was upset and scared. She said as I was walking into the house she could here someone walking on the gravel road behind her, but when she turned around there was no one there. She was freaking out. She told me she wanted to leave, NOW! As we walked out of the house and went around to the back I noticed an old covered well, the kind that had the crank above it. I tossed a rock in it and it was a few seconds before it hit bottom. I still wonder about that place and if someone had "dumped" something in that old well. There were definitely some type of "spirits" around that old house.

Back in the 70's I was hunting as a teenager in ET and had wandered across a few hundred acres into thick woods, I came across a Volkswagon Beetle, sitting on blocks, painted green, with windshield removed. In front of it was a real nice patch of rye grass. This was before the corn feeder style of hunting and someone had a real nice spot set up. My dad and I used to see a giant buck every year, the old grandpa buck with a huge rack. Always hoped he would survive since he was so cool.

Also found a real spring with concrete cylinder built to hold the water and when our electricity would go out (water well with electric pump) I would take gallon jugs to the 'spring' and get water. Simpler times.

Up in WA me and a buddy found a chainsaw half way in the tree stuck. It was there a year later.

I found a swimming pool in the bottom of a canyon with pvc running out of it to some strange smelling plants. Turned around and never looked back.

About ten years ago I was hunting in New Hampshire near the Maine border.



I found this old car, way up on a mountain top. To this day I cannot imagine how this car got up that terrain. It almost seemed as if a helicopter had dropped it there. No signs of a road, no signs of a trail. It was very steep to get into this area.

Found a 1911 penny in the middle of a cow trail on our place. Very corroded but I managed to clean it enough to read the year.

Two kids spraying pear for us found the barrel and other iron parts of a really old musket on our place. I wonder if the guy lost it being chased by injuns.

We have the remains of an old model T too.

Also found a stripper clip full of 30'06 blanks one morning. Apparently the Fort Hood boys had some exercises out our way in the 60s.

My grandpa once found an old bell while digging a posthole. He carved a handle for it and cleaned it up. It has a really nice tone.

About 20 yrs ago I was out scouting type 2 in Anderson county and found an old cabin remains with 3 graves all with the same day of death 1875.
In mid September 2001,first year on new lease so we were scouting the lay of the land. I spotted some thing hanging in a mesquite tree. I went to check it out and found out it was a weather balloon with a small styrofoam box with a very faded sticker on it saying when found return to any US post office. So the following Monday I took it to a post office in Garland. There was only 2 people working and 3 people behind me in line.
I explained that I found it and was following the instructions on it. Well they freaked out locked the doors and called the police. With in 2 minutes 3 police cars pull up, guns drawn, pointed at me and ordered me to the ground searched and handcuffed me. By then 5 more cruisers pulled up followed shortly by a fire truck and an ambulance. After a few minutes one of the workers came out and said she called a postal inspector who informed her it was a weather balloon instrument box and not a problem. She apologized, as did the police and they released me. Scared the crap out of me.

That's the state of paranoia that we live in today! absolutley crazy. glad you didn't get shot.

sitting in deer stand on one end of highline wire right of way. Small plane came flying in low and dropped and dark colored duffel bag. Dinosaur tracks on the Paluxy river near Glen Rose. They were way up in a limestone draw that fed into a crystal clear pool with a "Grotto". Went back a few weeks later with friends and couldn't find them, they filled in with mud from recent rains.

Old medicine bottle, high up on a ridge outside Bozeman, MT. The bottle says such-and-such drugstore, Bozeman, MT. Must have been an old cowboy "doctoring" his ailments.

Back down here on a Texas deer lease the landowner asked me to help him pickup a garden tiller by one spot with a windmill, load it in his Jeep and take it to their garden at his house. We found his wife working in the garden ---buck nekid.

what I saw. A squirrel stand up, put one paw on a tree, cross his feet. I said if he pulls out a cigarette, I will quit hunting.

Friends leased a ranch for cattle in camp wood. We were dozing fence lines found a trail the Mexicans used followed it to a spring and a poorly erected rock building. Had maps and cots and candles. Called BP they busted several groups in a few weeks period of time.

I found a motor cycle helmet in a dry creek about 3 miles from any roads. I was kind of scared to dig out of the sand in case someone was still wearing it.

Not hunting related but interesting nonetheless. A couple of years ago while walking one of my dogs on the shore of Whiterock lake, I saw a zippered purse floating near the old "Bathhouses". I got a long stick and fished it out. It had a wallet and young girls drivers license in it. I got back to the house, called information and remarkably got the phone number to the young Womans home. Intrigued, and wondering how this came to pass, I called. A man answered the phone. I introduced myself and told him what I had found. He was silent for a moment, then began to ask how I found it. He asked if he could meet me somewhere to pick up his daughters purse. I asked where he was located, he said in Richardson. Well, we live in Richardson also, so I said I could bring it to his house. I arrived about an hour later. This is where it gets freaky. It seems his daughter and a boyfriend had been drinking one rainy afternoon, left the bar and drove north on central expwy and pulled over on the SW corner of 635 and central. There is a creek right there, boyfriend was driving and blacked out, drove into the creek and their car washed down the creek. Somehow they escaped but he ended up on the opposite bank. In shock but alive, she started trying to make her way home, alone. When she got to what is now the "High five", a man jumped her and tried to rape her underneath the bridge. As he's telling me this my mouth is wide open. The would be rapist got a little too excited and splooged all over himself, then let her go. She ran up the service road in the rain, and a Richardson Cop stopped to help her, thank goodness. She was lucky to be alive. After he told me the story, he called "Amy", and told her that I had found her purse. She was crying uncontrollably on the other end of the line. I talked to her briefly and she told me thank you at least ten times. Her father told me that was the last time she had any alcohol.

It is crazy. It just so happened that I was showing some houses to a couple and I just had to tell them the story, since it happened just the day before. Wanting to repeat it EXACTLY as it was told to me, I didn't leave out the "Splooge" part. They freaked! The woman cried,"Oh my God". At this point I realized TMI! They did buy a house from me though.

Now that sounds like something I would do. You must be one helluva realtor.

I've probably talked more people OUT of buying, because I couldn't keep my mouth shut.

When my Dad and I hunt quail up near Littlefield, we always hunt a small patch around a fallen in stuccoed over adobe constuction garage. We haven't seen a covey there in years, but we always stop there anyway. One year several years ago, my daughter was with us and my Dad found a heavy old ceramic Christmas ornament that resembles a pomegranate. It is one of the first ornaments we put on our Christmas tree each year.

I'm going to add this one even though its not my story, in the sense that I didn't find it.

When I was a kid I used to hunt on a big ranch in Duval county. My dad met one of his best friends out there, and became one of mine as well. He was a guide at the time along with another guy. Well, this other guy saw something that he couldn't wait to tell. This was the late 70's, early 80's.

Story is, he was running his trap lines one morning and cut down a seldom used road on a hill that overlooked a lot of land. As he got out to reset his trap, he noticed a truck about 400 yards away. He got his binoculars, and could see that it was the ranch owners cousin and he had a deer in the back of his pickup. On closer inspection, he realized that he had the does leg up in the air, and his pants down around his knees, and he was trying to marry that thar deer. He couldn't stop laughing every time he told the story.

Still, to this day, when we see a doe run across the road, we say "There goes (omitted)'s girlfriend!"

This sounds like a yarn, I know, but knowing the players involved...I very much believe it to be true. If nothing else, it makes for a helluva campfire story.

We just moved to a new ranch south of Merkel. On a recent scouting trip, one of the guys found a old leg trap. When I setup my feeder in what I thought was a very remote location, I found a old metal tower blind that had blown over. It was one that was welded, not bolted together. We have no idea how someone got that blind to that location without using a helicopter. Can't wait until after deer season so I can hunt it for arrowheads.

I found parts of an old model t ford, I have found old snares, claw foot traps found a few sheds, tons of horse shoes& many old mason jars. I have yet to find an old gun

When I was a kid I found an old feed trough full of dirty magazines. I piled so many on the seat of my Honda 70 that I could barley reach the footpegs!!!! Boy, I was the hit of the neighborhood!!! lol

Ive got a very similar story.

Owner of a farm in Illinois that I hunt has a friend. This said friend shoot s adeer every time he goes in the woods. Im not joking. He kills 70-80 deer a year between 10 states. He pulls a trailer with a freezer and a mobile processing station. He leaves his house in the middle of Oct and doesnt return until the middle of January.

Anyways....Landowner was curious to see what else this guy was doing since he was killing so many deer and he followed him in one evening and set up about 100 yards away. Friend shoots 1st doe that comes through and then "nails" it on the ground too.

Landowner has this on video. Friend also admits to doing this and being caught by the landowner so that makes me believe it a little more. I refuse to watch the video.

Friends reply to all of this is....It gets lonely when you dont have your wife with you for 3 months.

I found some old glass bottles in what I guess was a trash pile.
One is brown, about a the size of a 40oz beer bottle and says "Federal law forbids sale" on one side and "Or re - use of this bottle". Another clear square shaped one with a rode print.

One frosty morning I climbed a tree with my climbing stand and waited for daylight. The morning was sunny and warming quickly. As it got warmer I noticed alot of flying insects, then I could hear alot of humming. Soon , yellow jackets were swarming all around, and I noticed them coming out of a hole in the tree, below me. I was trapped. Ended up I had to bail out of the stand without a parachute. I survived the jump, then had to get a very long branch to knock down the stand. Naturally the stand dropped right on the hole, and the bees chased me thru a cornfield. Waited for them to calm down and knocked the stand to the ground and got the he?? out of there. It was not a very good morning hunt, to say the least.

Can't remember if I posted this earlier but when I was way younger I found a full set of womans clothing. Wasn't old enough to know what that probably meant...

2 new climbing stands and a camera as well! Close to our back fence near a road. I hate poachers! But I did get some good stuff that year...they never came poaching there .

Found a metal arrow, intact, and one that was mangled (and possibly hit its target), next to a 1730 Spanish coin in far west Texas. Marked the spot and planned to go back someday with a metal detector to see what I could find.

I found a rangefinder that someone lost 3 years previous, while walking around the ranch. Still worked!

I can't remember if I posted this before but when the Space Shuttle Columbia broke up over east Texas there were groups of people sent into the woods to map and recover the various parts. While searching they found a lot of stills, illegal grow operations and according to a friend, several "major" crime scenes. One thing they found "several miles from the nearest road" was a skeleton duct taped to a tree.

That is really cool wish I had found it^ I put up a bow blind in an area I also thought was remote. 15 feet in the air the second or third time I ever sat there looking up in the trees was tractor seat mounted on top a tree branch. It was about 20 feet higher in the old oak tree than I was. Who knows how old it was good to know someone else thought it was a good spot.

I have not really found anything unusual, but I have seen UFO's. I have seen a large flying object moving slowly close enough to the ground that I could see a greenish/blue tint coming from what I assumed to be windows.......little or no sound. I have seen (on the same lease) an object of some sort hovering and then making twist and turns fairly close to the ground before disappearing that no aircraft in the US that I know of anyway is capable of. And yes, I was sober. The first object I saw was by myself, but two other lease buddies saw the same type object the week before and another lease buddy was with me and witnessed the second object which we first both thought was a helicopter until it started diving and darting.

Found my wedding ring the day after losing it. Was digging frost out of the freezer outside bare handed then shook my hands in pain. Noticed my ring was gone a little later. Walked up and down path to my deer stand at night then searched camp. Didn't find it till next morning. It flew about 20 yards. Thought I was gonna have to explain to my wife of less than a year I lost my ring.

The pistol was rusted solid..the grips were like powder rotted wood.it was loaded and the hammer was pulled back.

I found it when I was a boy in the 1960's in Juno,Tx.

I was sitting on a rock ledge over looking a canyon deer hunting..I happened to look down into the large rock I was sitting on that had a large long wide crack along it.I saw a rusted thing towards the bottom of the crack in the rock at the ground line.I climbed down the rock to the ground.I was able to dig under the rock crack at the soil line and pull it out that way..I still have that old thing..still rusted solid..you can see the lead balls in the cylinder.

Was tracking a deer and walked up on an 6 foot airplane prop. Have no clue where it came from, appeared to have been there a while. no reports of any crashes or anything.

There were several WASP trainer centers for woman pilots in Texas during the wars. Maybe, that's where it came from as they would not publish crashes because of political correctness issues of the time.

Me and the Father inlaw found an OLD Elk Shed 7 point in Webster county Iowa while pheasant hunting....there is no Elk in Iowa!

Brother and I were poking around a creepy, abandoned "seasonal worker" home on the edge of our property when we were teenagers. Found an old stove inside the house so I pulled open the warmer drawer to see if the prior occupants left any cool stuff inside.

When I cracked the drawer, two ringtail cats leapt out and made a run for it. Pretty sure I pissed my pants.

I've found a large lock blade pocket knife on the lease. A box of .243 shells and rattling horns in my stand, a rusted pair of fencing pliers in an old barn on another lease and a $20.00 bill between some rocks at a lake.
