Need some Beta Testers

Need some Beta Testers - 03/15/19 04:10 AM

Some of you may remember an old thread where I built an activity monitor to keep an eye on freezer temperatures. link

My friend and I have taken this product to a more mature level and I am looking for 3 people to help beta test some units before a production run is made. If you would be interested please post up a picture of your freezer and it contents and I'll be picking 3 people to give units to.

What does the sensor do – The sensors report the internal temperature of your freezer in 5-minute intervals, will send SMS/Emails alerting you to abnormal conditions (you set the thresholds) and build trends over time so we can begin to alert you to potential failures. Much more in store but this is still in development.

You will be obligated to provide feedback on the device and will be given a “Pro” Membership for free, for a year, if/when this goes into production as a thank you for your help. On installation, we will do a remote session with you to help configure your device and give you a walk-thru of the site and all the feature/functions of your device.

Lots of people think hunting is “free meat” when, in reality, if you look in your freezer and consider the financial commitment that went into putting the meat in there, it’s hardly free. Now you can protect it.

Sounds like a good idea and could be used in a commercial setting as well. I am interested and will get you a picture of the outside and inside of my freezer.

nacgoat08 could have used one of these about 3 years back.

Perfect - thanks for offering to help

We all need them in the future! To much investment to leave it to chance. This device will give you 24-36 hours (depending on freezer quality and ambient temperature) to act should there be a total failure and it also will give you the data needed to be proactive before a failure. Never lose meat again!

I’ve got one running in my big freezer now. My new double door fridge needs one, and I would really like one at the lake house. All three are stuffed with venison.

What all is required for installing it? I saw your original post about drilling a hole into your freezer. Is this still the same concept or is it now a no holes required? Just curious.

What are you using to monitor?

No more drilling, 1.3mm flat cable goes around seal without disruption.

I’m using the LaCross app from Amazon.

Had not seen that before - which sensor(s) are you using? How do you like it? I'd like to get one of mine to you so you can give us some unique perspective on what's better/worse than your current solution.

I’m using one sensor only in my big freezer. If you like, I’ll beta test for you. I’m retired IT so I may be the beta tester from Hell. Eventually I want to monitor all three freezers. Mine gives ambient temp, sensor temp and ambient humidity. It needs a power failure alarm. It emails alarms to us.

Mine will Email, SMS and soon to be added an automated voice call. This is temperature only at this time, and will also alert if the sensor disconnects from the backend. I'll Shoot you a PM - you would be a really good use case.

Re: Need some Beta Testers - 03/16/19 03:27 PM

I lost a load of meat in a freezer a couple decades ago when a puppy walked behind it and pulled the plug out without me knowing it. A week later, I saw water under the freezer and realized what had happened when I opened it up.

It takes several days for a freezer to thaw out enough to ruin what's in there. Wouldn't an alarm on the door be easier to create that goes off until somebody stops it? If you are at work when your freezer stops working, the meat will still be fine by the time you get home, and when you get home, the alarm will let you know that there is a problem.

I’ll do it

I actually have a fridge freezer with a leaky seal so might give you some data

audible alarms are good, however, our unit sends texts, emails and (coming) phone calls as you pass thresholds; if the alarm goes off and no one is there to hear it then you will still lose the freezer. This gives you 24x7 active monitoring and delivers the alerts to the device that most of us can't live without. Also an open door is only 1 of 100's of potential problems. a door can be closed, but the freezer can still stop working. We solve for all the potential scenarios.

At this time I have all the folks I need; however, I will keep you on the list for beta-2 testing. Thanks!

I'm in! Had two freezers in the past where someone didn't shut it correctly and I paid the price.

Got a brand new Kenmore full stand up freezer with lots of venison and bone broths ready for future soups.

Well, I am trying to break it. But, this little gadget is pretty smart. It’s bugging me now with text and email messages that the fridge and freezer is to warm. It is a test. The gadget is still sitting on my table. I’m burning it in before I install it.

It is a nice product for sure. Based on Raspberry Pi. Of which I know nothing.

Re: Need some Beta Testers - 06/01/19 03:04 AM

we've done a lot to the portal and the physical design of the unit; sensor cables are 1.3mm now, smaller form factor and wrapping up a 37 user beta test. all feedback was very positive and in many cases constructive that led to some changes.

@Garvey, yours is ready.
