12V battery charger- feeder battery

12V battery charger- feeder battery - 10/09/18 09:59 PM

I need a reliable 12V battery charger (not solar charger, but actual battery charger) for my deer feeders. The Wildlife Innovations 6V/12V charger is the biggest POS out there, so don't recommend this unit. Thanks!

I’ll have a look to see what it I have now. The first solar charger I had on the feeder was all plastic. The coons just flat tore it to little pieces. So the replacement has an aluminum frame and mounting gear, though the coons have twice wrecked the wiring from solar cell to battery. It’s in some serious conduit now. You could do chin-ups on it. I’m ahead, for now...

I’ll look.

I need to get some solar chargers also, but I'm looking for an actual battery charger that plugs into the wall to charge a dead 12V feeder battery.

I bought one of these last December. Working fine so far.

Chad, I just use a battery charger I got at Walmart. It has a switch for either 6v or 12v batteries. Worked great for me for the last 5 years.

I'm a big fan of Battery Tender products. I've got several products of theirs, haven't had any problems from them.

Something like THIS would probably work just fine for what you want to do.

You want to make sure you’re using a charger that’s designed for the type of battery you need to charge. As a general rule, the type of connectors will tell you the type of battery it’s designed to work with. If it has small, alligator type clips it was likely designed to work with smaller 6 and 12-volt batteries. A charger with much larger clips is likely designed for larger batteries. Using the wrong charger can destroy the battery. That’s the simple answer without getting into battery construction.

I’ve also purchased the smaller 6-volt batteries that I found were DOA and would not take a charge once I got them home. Wouldn’t be surprised if they were batteries that someone purchased earlier, put the wrong charger on them, and then returned them claiming they were bad.

Walmart sells some really good cheap little battery chargers. I have a couple, charger is about size/shape of a brick with a wall plug cord and asset of battery leads about 8-foot each. They will charge and automatically sense 6 or 12 volt and wont overcharge and have a maintainer feature. I have left batteries on the charger for a month with no issue. Only down side I have found is I use it for everything and its 1.5 amp charge (which is great for batteries) takes a while to charge up the deep cycle on our boat etc. They run around $20.

My experience with the plug in the wall chargers are that they are all over the place in output, especially the ones with a toggle switch to goes from high to low. Check them with a volt meter and select accordingly.

BatteryMINDer® Model 1510 is what I use.

I have had excellent service from Wildgame Innovations 12V solar panels from Academy.

This brand has been the best as we have tried everything.. Battery tender makes another one a step up that will work on 6 volt and 12 volt and also blink orange if the battery will not take a charge.... Most of the time these 12v batteries are such hunks of Chit now!!! We go to a computer store to buy our now... Sonic batteries have proved to be the best.. they are grey with a blue top...

Ditto battery tender, iirc it also conditions the battery, anyone? I could have it confused with the boat charger scared Tender works great on my ATV, welder and compressor tho.

I'll second the idea that having a charger with clips that will fit the battery is important. I just looked at one of my chargers for 6 and 12 Volt and they have smaller clips that will attach to the smaller 6 and 12 volt batteries and stay there. I have another that has larger clips and it is a pain in the .... sadly it does not even have an indication of the brand. I probably got it at Walmart or Academy but it works the best for me.
