Will Deer eat vines like honeysuckle, Jasmine, clematis, etc? - 01/30/09 09:44 PM

I recently bought a new 200 acre ranch and want to try some food plots. Having a horticulture background i am very familiar w/vines, bushes, & other ground covers that will produce leafy vegitation. My 1st thought is vines as they proliferate & over time will spread. Since I am new at this I had to ask? There is probably a good reason why evryone plants food plots but maybe it is because none of the other methods have been tried. What do you think?

Vines seem to be a preferred foods: greenbrier and honeysuckle are 2 that I have read they like.

You might find this thread on East Texas Deer Foods that I created of interest:

Also, in researching, I found you can usually google on, for example, "clematis deer" to find out if it is a good deer food.

So far, on my list, the only shrubs and vines I've found that deer DON'T like is Waxmyrtle.

Deer love honeysuckle. I can't keep it growing anywhere because the eat it to the ground once it gets fragrant. My mom has it growing on the chain link fence next to their porch and the deer will literally get up on the porch to eat honeysuckle. treesforwildlife.com has some good info on what can be grown for all game attraction not just deer.

Classic. Grandma sang it to mom and mom sang it to me and now I sing it to mine.

Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?

If the words sound queer and funny to your ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey,
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy."

Yes, we have some land in louisiana we used to plant food plots on. Over time we have noticed the deer will not come to them during the day much but will eat the natural browse. We started mowing the rite of ways about the end of june and fertilizing them sept 1 and have had terrific results. Alot easier and less money involved than food plots. According to the louisiana parks and wildlife the nutrition rates of fertilized honey suckle and other natural browse compare very well with oats and other common "plot type" feeds.

My wife just shot an axis about two days ago and it had been eating off of cedar trees.

We are loaded up in greenbriar on one of our places. We have lanes shredded through it. you can see on the edge of all these lanes where the deer keep it browsed back pretty heavily.
