A rock and a rope

A rock and a rope - 11/24/14 04:26 PM

Old timer showed me this one. After gutting a deer, split the skin down both legs, skin the neck back about 6 inches. Insert a rock under the neck skin (rock about the size of a bar of soap).
Tie off the rock/ skin with a rope and tie the other end to your trailer hitch. Tie another rope to the bucks antlers (or does head) and attach the other end to a tree.
Drive off (slowly) Takes about 10 seconds to skin a deer. woot

If you have ever been in a cattle slaughter house, it's the same principle as removing a cowhide. Of course it will fail if you use a weak rope or brain!
Done right it will peel a deer hide off in a heartbeat.

seen it with a tractor and a rock and a rope... but I think I can skin one about as fast as you can get that whole rig set up and the skin pulled. I'll defiantly be in the ball park if I get to start when at the same time you get too

Friends of mine has ranch in Brewster county and they have a skinning room with a 1 ton electric hoist and 3 1/2" drill pipe cemented in one corner with hook. Works great, help it past front legs and just like skinning a tree rat.

That is how we skin all our deer, except there is a winch setup and you just winch the skin off. Never had a failure yet.

LOL ... yeah, 40 some odd years ago someone told us about this trick. We had a big old mesquite tree that had a gazillion deer dressed in it, we thought we would give it a try. Backed the truck up under limb, lifted and tied doe up by the head, skinned around neck and split up the legs. put a rock on the hair side and tied a rope securely around it and then tied off to the trailer ball on the back of dad's truck. He got in and started moving forward, skin just pealed off down to about the hind quarters ... that's when the rope in the tree broke ... launching the truck forward before anyone to scream for him to stop ... it was a hellofamess to pick all the leaves, dirt, grass, etc. off the 3/4 skinned deer ... but we learned to put a heavier rope in the tree after that. As I grew into an adult, I tend to agree that I think I can skin one about as fast by hand over getting everything set up to do the truck method.

Yep, i have been doing this for 25 years with deer and elk. This works really good if you hang the animal in a stout tree or on an "A" frame. The sooner after you shoot and field dress the animal, the easier the skin peels off. Once the hide gets cold, the more effort it takes to partially cape and then pull the hide off. As i have become more refined, I started using a golf ball . I keep one in my toolbox just for deer season. cowboy

My son was on a Texas Youth Hunting Program hunt with 5 or 6 other boys. The hunt masters skinned a deer like that using a golf ball, tree, and a mule. The boys really got a kick out of it. One said he had never dreamed he would see a deer skinned by a mule.

By the time you get that all set up and ready to go you could have almost been done.

It works well for me. Key is what you hang the deer from I think and bringing neck skin down far enough.

Re: A rock and a rope - 11/25/14 03:57 PM

I have been doing this for years. I've used the truck and ATV etc. One of the biggest advantages is that you get no hair on the meat and I have yet to do one with a knife when you don't have to deel with that.
Now when I was station in NC and couldn't get my truck in the backyard I have to tell you my wife was so proud when I was doing this in the front yard as the neighbors and everyone driving by watched... Hmmm you might be a redneck: food

I've done it a few times using an ATV or truck to pull with. Now we have a hand crank winch on bottom and an electric winch to pull from the top. Works awesome to skin and quarter a deer.

I was doing this before golf balls were invented. Unless you have been skinning deer the conventional way that long there is no way you can even come close. My skin would be laying on the ground while you were still pulling and cutting. Having said that.. I use 2 people....one in the truck and one cutting. up

Unless caping for a mount, we do this on every deer.
