I believe that I read that a coral snakes fangs are so short & mouth so small it would be hard to get bit by one.

It can be hard to be bitten by one, but it can and does happen because they can bite things like fingers and toes just fine.

Fortunately they are pretty mild mannered and you really have to tick them off for them to bite you. They do have small mouths and teeth designed more for chewing than anything else. I had a boy in my Scout troop carry one around in his pocket for a whole week at summer camp. Thought it was a King snake. It's bad Ju Ju to get bitten by one.

We were doing some maintenance around the hunt camp earlier this year and I when moved a large rock there was what I thought a coral snake. I had to stop to remember the red touches yellow rhyme. It turned out to be a scarlett king. I did move it so that others wouldn't go nuts if they saw it while wandering around camp.

This^^^^^! While they are mild mannered, they can open their mouth 180degrees. Their fangs are "relatively" short and fixed but can still put you in a world of hurt if you mess with one.

Most US anti-venom is based on pit vipers (rattle snakes, copperheads, and cotton mouths) which is where most negative human contacts occur...Corals are relatives of the cobra family. With few encounters and fewer envenomation's it is not a "huge" risk to the public unless you happen to be one of the few that do come in contact with one in a bad way.

Huh... if they are around Houston, then they probably are down in my area as well. (Seadrift/Port O'connor)Going to keep a eye out for 'em.

They are certainly around Houston. A few years ago I left the patio door open most of the day to air out the house. That night when the wife and i were sitting in the living room watching tv a coral snake slithered out from behind the tv. Swept it out to the garage and took a hoe to it, but was walking on eggshells around the house for about a month wondering what else had came inside.

Growing up in SC my we had snakes for pets. A guy brought me one thinking it was a scarlet kind about 12" long. When we got this one it moved rather slow compared to other snakes I had when we got it out and put it in a cage. Immediately after my mom & dad discovered what I had I had to get rid of it and traded it for an albino king.
