I just bought a drone. Seriously.

I just bought a drone. Seriously. - 01/25/14 12:05 AM

Well I'm embarrassed to say that all the drone jokes got me interested. Geeked out on my way home from work and blew some Christmas money on an AR Parrot Drone.

Curious to try it out to do some aerial scouting... Stay tuned.

Range is crap. Only like 50-60 yds. I hear you can boost the wifi and get it to go over 300 yds. It's pretty cool though that you control it from the screen on your phone as it streams video -- you can see from the drones point of view as you fly it.

Well i was going to say if it was 300 to 500 yards you might could spot Plan A next year while your sitting in your stand. Put an ol stalk on him banana

Yessir. I'm ready to take it to the next level.

At the very least, it'd be nice if I could at least send it down the street to 7-11 to fetch me a fresh can of snuff!

Range depends on how much money you want to spend on one, my neighbor will be through with another one in a few days that if does what it supposed to will go more than a mile.

Cos, so was it your neighbor that sent the drone to your feeder that looked like a bird? If so, he has skills!

My brother is a beach guy so he wants to video and take pics of vacations, and I'm sure some hunting stuff too. I'm curious how tolerant critters would be of it.

That's what I want to try and fig out -- plan on taking to my property to see how close I can fly it to a deer before they spook. Thought about painting it like a mallard and taking it duck hunting tomorrow to have it hover over my spread too but I'm not very good at flying it yet and id hate to crash it into the water.

It's not very loud at all. I'll post up some videos of it soon.

The technology exists to use 3G or 4G wireless and GPS tracking to control a conventional remote control model airplane that could literally travel for miles and easily return to where it took off. You could just add a small video recording unit and capture recorded video, or add something that streams video if the plane is large enough to carry it.

I would not be surprised if the model airplane flyers are not already building their own "home brew" drones by assembling the necessary components themselves, just as hunters once did with the first home brew game cameras.

Watch the second half of this video for some pretty cool stuff.

Re: I just bought a drone. Seriously. - 01/30/14 04:04 PM

I can already see some Texas hunter getting totally ticked off when his neighbor's drone keeps buzzing his feeder.

It's obvious there are commercially available drones today that you can get for less than the price of a UTV, that can be controlled to fly anywhere a tank of gas or battery charge will take them.

the ones I have seen are pretty noisy ... one of the guys that works for me brought his in and flew it around but I think it would spook wild game from quite a distance ... maybe they have improved.

Question? Would it be legal to fly a drone over your neighbors hunting area filming things. I'm guessing it would be. If so, would neighbor get in trouble for shooting it down?

Actually a good question. Airspace and how it applies to land ownership.

I would shoot it down if I had my shotgun with me

Re: I just bought a drone. Seriously. - 01/31/14 01:46 AM

Sounds vague but illegal. Seems as though you can't shoot it down though. Except somewhere in Colorado...

Harassing hunters is illegal. I'd consider a neighbor's drone buzzing my feeder as harassment.

Re: I just bought a drone. Seriously. - 01/31/14 02:17 AM

Yea I agree, his question specifically - illegal. I was wondering in general.

Re: I just bought a drone. Seriously. - 01/31/14 05:56 AM

I have a dji phantom. Not the vision the original. I have a gopro strapped to it and get about 12 minutes of flight time per battery. Im still stretching my legs out with it but it can go pretty far. Far enough to easily lose it in the clouds or horizon. Also you cant really hear it when its about 20 feet up. If you lose power or cant see it anymore you can gurn off the remote and it will fly itself back and land within 6 feet of where it took off. My videos arent worrh sharing, but there are some really cool videos on youtube.

I really hope we don't have to deal with these thing all over in the future. I know there is research testing in a few states Texas included for different uses. It would be really tough to get away from it all with drones hovering around out in the middle of nowhere recording everything.
