What is the distance between your blind and feeder?

What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/01/14 04:42 PM

For those that do stand/feeder hunt, I was curious of distances between the two and your reasoning for that distance. We have one as close as 40yds good for hog hunting and one almost 100 yds. for concealment. I was thinking of moving that one and had thought about making it between 150-175.

Curious of what your process is for making this decision. Obviously if you don't use stand/feeder setup, I get it.

Exactly 113 yards from blind to feeder.. Just looked like a good place to set them up

Most of ours are about 75 yards, but all within 100 yards.

We take a lot of novice, first time hunters (sons, daughters, grandchildren, etc) and we want it close enough as to not create too challenging a shot, but far enough that restless kids don't easily spook their quarry.

Usually wherever I hunt, feeders are set between 70-120yd. When we had our own place, our feeders were at like 60, 80, and 90 or so yards.

If you're shootin em off a feeder in the first place, why worry about how far away you are? Just get as close as possible to help guarantee a DRT shot...

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/01/14 04:53 PM

I have two that are 100 yards and two that are about thirty yards. The two close ones are for bow hunting mostly and the other two are rifle so we set the as far back as possible but still have a good view of the trails.

One is 200, and one is 88 yds. I have the 88 yd feeder cycle 15-20 minutes after the 200 yd feeder to pull the deer closer after feeding at the far feeder. The deer tend to relax a little. I do this because I mostly hunt with a handgun.

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/01/14 05:21 PM

Usually I have two set up, this year went with one. It's 140yd from the stand, and the only thing I've shot off it has been a pig.

We throw 1/3 of a bag of corn out at two other locations every sit. On at 60yds directly in front of the stand, and the other in the right field at around 100yds. The pig pipe is sitting at 165yds.

All deer to date have been shot off the thrown corn.

The feeder and pope are just there to keep them coming in the area for us up

110-252. I set up where I can come and go with deer around the feeder and them not know I'm there.

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/01/14 06:07 PM

Of the two I use most frequently and have had the most consistent success with, one is 123 yards box stand to feeder, the other is 13 yards ladder-stand to feeder. I seldom see bucks in my feeder pens, usually does, which I consider the REAL bait, anyway. I rely on my feeders only to keep the girls fat and happy. The girls are what bring in the boys.

Mine is 40 yards from blind to feeder. But I usually shoot them on their way to the feeder, about 120 yards

Tomorrow I'm hunting zero feet from the feeder. It is a 30 acre wheat field, I'll be on the edge of. If the does behave this year, like they have for 3 years before they will pop out of the woods 100 to 400 yards from where I will be set up.

I try for exactly 100 yards. Like others have said, try to position the blinds so that you can get into the blind without the deer seeing

With that in mind, how far away do you park?

The land dictates the distance.

75, 65 and 100 yards for where I hunt.

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/01/14 09:56 PM

I have one setup that is on a road with the blind between them. North feeder is 200 yards and the South feeder is around 100 yards. My other setup is about 120 yards.

I park about 100 yards North of the North feeder and have to walk past it to the blind. I have to walk past both feeders and maybe a mile to get to my other setup on the South side of my area.

We only bow hunt for deer, so they are right at 30 yards apart. We do have some stands that are farther apart for when we hog hunt with rifles.

Depends anywhere from 25 to abt 140 just depends on where and why the stand will be used. Park 300 to 500 yards away

Ours are about 100 yds or just under. One is about 30 yds. That one is intended for bow hunting but we have a gun blind at the same distance.

194 yards. I put the feeder in what I considered the best place and 194 yards was the closest tree for my ladder stand. grin

In Edwards County 205 on one, 212 on the other...as Rifleman and Pitchfork stated I am up on a ridge and both Pens are down in Bowls and I like to ease in and out..In Young County 135, because I let the Wifey Poo be comfortable with placement..

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/02/14 04:23 AM

One blind, two feeders. One feeder set up for rifle and bow. Two bow stands and the rifle stand at 60 yards. We have young folk who the shorter shot is friendly for. The other feeder is at 180 yards. I like it because it's way off of the lease road, no one "goes by and checks on things" and it's still an easy shot from the blind.

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/02/14 06:55 AM

66 yards, but I don't normally sit in the stand. Deer get so fixated on the stand, sit opposite of the stand and you will see many more deer. Most times I can barely see the feeder due to the thick brush, but I can see a lot of deer that never make it to the feeder. When I do hunt a stand, it's usually the ladder stand that's 52 yards away but about 15-20 feet back in the woods from the clearing. The blind is just for when I have guest

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/02/14 11:28 AM

On my last lease on the Clear Fork, I had 7 stands and 20 feeders. The feeders ranged from 122 to 210 yards. I park as close to the stand as possible to avoid spooking the deer when walking in, never more than 50 yards away.

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/02/14 12:36 PM

Ours are at 100 and under, but part of that is because we have very few clearings that are much greater in size.

I am of two minds on distances. First is that being close makes for a more exciting evening of hog hunting. At about 50 yards, I regularly can hear animals crunching on dry corn if the wind isn't rustling the trees too bad. I can often hear the animals coming into the feeder well before I see them. I can hear the chittering of baby raccoons and the talking grunts of hogs.

At 100 yards, I don't hear anything at the feeder unless it is raccoons or hogs fighting.

At 140 yards (neighbor's place I've hunted), you can have a regular conversation with a partially deaf guy and the pigs not hear you at the feeder if the wind isn't blowing toward them.

Current setup is 130 yards blind to feeder with no theory behind it other than it looked to be the best option based on that area.

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/03/14 05:03 PM

The main blind I hunt is about 10 yards. It is so close for hunting with the longbow and I am going to start hunting with my 10mm from there too. Normally we put our rifle blinds at the best spot we can find 50 to 120 yards. For compound bow hunting the feeder is 18 yards away. The blind at 10 yards away is hard to not get caught with a lot of scent killer on and quiet clothes. When deer come in and I start breathing heavy I have to work to control so they don't hear hear it.

Bow blinds/stands are 15-25 yards. My favorite rifle blind I hunt has two feeders, one at 140 and the other at 235. It always amazes me the number of different deer I see at those two.

Average for us is about 100yds. Couple are 90yds, couple are further. Some shots out to 175 but most around 100 or so. I don't like sitting right on top of a feeder unless I'm using a pistol or bow.

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 01/05/14 02:44 AM

We have 3 blinds with feeders. All 90-110. We also have bow blinds built 20 yds from each either in tree or on platforms. We can either rifle hunt or bow/handgun hunt each feeder. We like the 100 yd thing as hogs usually cant hear you if you funble a little. Deer mostly cant but have to be a little more aware

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 02/01/14 04:49 AM

This is a good topic. This is my first yr here in Texas. I set up my feeder in the middle of three distinct deer trails. I set up my blind 35yds directly in front of my feeder and so I can see all three trails coming into the feeder. The guys at the lease say I am too close and getting winded by the big boys. I have a few regulars that come by no matter what but they are either doe or younger bucks. I did have some great shooters, but never caught site of them in person. I did not get a chance to hunt the rut this year. I use scent killer and I'm extremely quiet having grown up a still/stalk hunter. Thinking of moving my blind, but it will compromise my early detection. What do you guys think?

Posted By: redchevy

Re: What is the distance between your blind and feeder? - 02/04/14 04:16 PM

75-110 Yards.

I wouldn't mind some of them being further so the blinds are less imposing to deer and would make coming and going easier, but we have to keep them close enough for everyone to feel comfortable. My wife and SIL don't like the longer shots so we keep them all within easily reachable range for all.

Next year I think a large part of our hunting will be done out of blinds on fed sendero's with no feeders.
