I have a place in Blanco county, and its great hunting. We've had deer taken on our lease that scored in the 150's and 160's, which is all free range low fence deer. The terrain is very rocky and somewhat brushy, but there are clearings in a lot of places to put stands up. I don't know what kinda animals(exotics) that may be on the place your looking at but I know that we have a small black buck, and a small aoudad population, cause they probably travel from ranch to ranch but we see them every year. The deer population is high on my place, this year were only supposed to shoot 6 does for the year and how every many bucks we want. We try to shoot mainly culls and maybe 1 or 2 trophys a year, we have a good management system going, but it could all be different on other places.

north of Johnson city the hunting is a lot bigger. that Pedernales river valley has some pretty good bucks living off it.

I've seen bucks on places north west of Johnson city that were bigger than what the hill country is supposed to produce.

I have been hunting a place around 200 ac. in Blanco and it is okay. Best buck in 15 years of hunting my have been 125 or so. We have some Axis deer but they only hang out on one section of the property - its so odd but they only hang out in a 20ac area of the place. We are about 8 miles or so west of town along the Blanco river. It is a HEAVY hunted area. Last year I had 15 hunts before I even saw a doe.

I did hunt a larger place 10 miles north of us and deer were roaming every where.

Glowka, we hunt off of 1888 about a mile or two from Crabapple. Right across the river. You must be one of our neighbors out there or something. We are exactly 2.6 miles from the Maenius Rd. and 1888 intersection on the north side of the road. Next time you are out swing on by and hang out for a few.

Hunting is terrible out there and has been but we ALWAYS have a great time.

My inlaws live off crabapple and I don't hunt out there. The deer population is sparse

I hunt just south of town off 281. We have a very healthy deer population, but have never seen a single exotic. We saw and shot on sight our first hog ever 4 years ago and have only seen/ killed 2 since. Every year we kill deer into the 130's with a 140 every now and again. Thats after several years of management and letting the deer get old. Finally started them on protein two years ago and have seen our pencil horned deer grow some pretty impressive mass this year. We get the usual main frame 8 and ten points. We dont see alot of kickers or unusual characteristics.

Someone needs to speak with the game warden and local biologist then. He told us on our lease which we just got this year we neede to kill 90 does. We do see a lot of deer but 90 does is ludacris when you only see 2/hunt at the feeder.

I have seen some real good bucks over off 471 east of 281 south of 32. larger landholdings there and its not heavily hunted. lots of turkey to. I would love to own some property in that area. it is prone to flooding there along the little blanco though.

unless your lease is 5000 acres you need a new biologist.

if your seeing 2 does per sit how are you gonna kill 90?

Re: blanco county - 11/28/13 03:11 AM

Our place on crabapple is covered up with deer. Biggest problem for us is lack of good genetics, not many bucks over 8 pts and most would score 120ish at best.
